Research in marine ecology and ecosystems using simulation modelling, experimental ecology and
research cruises. Current applied projects are related to conservation, aquaculture, fisheries ecology
and resource mapping.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Spatially explicit frameworks for the prediction and management of invasive marine species
Marine species do not invade in a homogenous environment. Some sites are more linked by
currents or shipping, while others have barriers imposed by factors like a lack of suitable habitat or
the presence of upwelling or hydrographic fronts. This project will assess how such features have
shaped the invasion history of introduced species and how targeted management can use the
presence of spatial features to control the spread of species cost-effectively.
Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway:
NUI Galway projects should emphasise features that are not typically available in Brazil – specific equipment,
multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research
groups etc.
Research will be based in the multi-disciplinary Ryan Institute and will involve registration in a
structured PhD programme. The project will involve multivariate clustering, GIS and spatial analyses.
