Research in marine ecology and ecosystems using simulation modelling, experimental ecology and research cruises. Current applied projects are related to conservation, aquaculture, fisheries ecology and resource mapping. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Evaluating seaweed resources: canopy structure, production and fate in the intertidal The structure of the seaweed canopy affects productivity by changing how light is intercepted. While it is possible to model light interception by different types of canopies, there is little field information of the vertical structure of algal canopies and how this varies in time and space. This project will use filed surveys and modelling to establish the potential variations in algal productivity. Drift algae will be mapped and related to source populations to understand the fate of algal production in subsidizing other habitats. Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: NUI Galway projects should emphasise features that are not typically available in Brazil – specific equipment, multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research groups etc. Research will be based in the multi-disciplinary Ryan Institute and will involve registration in a structured PhD programme.
