The main focus of the group is on scene analytics for detection of other road users to allow the vehicle to gain an understanding of its environment. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Autonomous agricultural robot This project will involve fitting a camera system and advanced image processing hardware to a robotic platform to allow the robot to navigate its way through a field. The system will then use the cameras to identify, and if possible remove weeds surrounding the valuable cash crop. This could be achieved mechanically or using a highly localised spray. Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway: The CAR group at NUI Galway have a number of years of working with camera systems in an automotive environment, and have recently begun work on agricultural applications of this technology. The group has accumuilated an extensive body of expertise in the area over the years, and the successful researcher will benefit from working alongside a team of researchers working on automotive camera technology. The group also has several years experience working with industry. The CAR group is situated in Ireland’s largest school of engineering at NUI Galway. This €40m building was opened in summer 2011 and is equipped with a suite of state of the art laboratory facilities http://www.nuigalway.ie/new-engineering-building/ Universidade Nacional da Irlanda em Galway -- Ciência sem Fronteiras Name & contact details for project queries, if different from PI named above: Please indicate the graduates of which disciplines that should apply: Electronic & Computer Engineering Computer Science (with experience in signal and image processing) Ciência sem Fronteiras / Science Without Borders Priority Area: Please indicate the specific programme priority area under which the proposed PhD project fits- choose only one (tick box): Engineering and other technological areas Pure and Natural Sciences (e.g. mathematics, physics, chemistry) Health and Biomedical Sciences Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) X Aerospace Pharmaceuticals Oil, Gas and Coal Renewable Energy Minerals Biotechnology Nanotechnology and New Materials Technology of prevention and remediation of natural disasters Biodiversity and Bioprospection Marine Sciences Creative Industry New technologies in constructive engineering Please indicate which of the following applies to this project (referring to Science Without Borders arrangements): Suitable only as a Full PhD (Y/N): Y Available to candidates seeking a Sandwich PhD arrangement (Y/N): _____ Suitable for either/Don’t know: _____
