Our research focuses on optimising new product development processes and systems. We work
closely with industry to diagnose problems; design solutions; and deploy them in order to reduce
cost; shorten lead time and increase revenue. We adopt a systems approach to our work - we focus
on people; process and technology related issues.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Idea selection system for new product development in the medical device industry
The identification, evaluation and selection of new product ideas in order to create high value
products are imperative to medical device organisations. Selecting winning ideas early in the new
product development process has a significant impact on key performance metrics such as time,
cost and sales. This project builds on our previous research. The goal is to design a decision support
system to categorize, evaluate and validate new product ideas against predefined criteria in order to
select the best ideas for product development in the medical device industry. The researcher will
model the front end of new product development processes in a sample of medical device
companies; identify and prioritise new product requirements and constraints, develop a decision
support system that that uses multi-criteria analysis and validate the system in three medical device
companies.
