NUI Galway, Diploma in Italian online Frequently Asked Questions I have never studied Italian before, can I do the online diploma? I have studied some Italian but need to revise the basics – can I do the course? The online diploma in Italian caters for beginners. No previous knowledge of Italian is required and where students already have some knowledge of the language, classes will start from the basics so that there are no gaps in their knowledge. When is the diploma held? The first face-to-face introductory class is held on Saturday 8th September. Participation in this class is important as all tools used will be explained at this stage. Additional face-to-face sessions will be held during the two semesters, dates will be finalised in September 2012. What happens if I can’t attend the face-to-face sessions on campus? The objective of the diploma is to reach students who, for various reasons, are not able to attend traditional classes in Galway. Whilst we would encourage participants to attend at least some of the classes, we understand that in some cases this may not be possible and will provide alternative options. How long does it last? Course material will be presented over 24 weeks: 12 weeks in semester one and 12 weeks in semester two. At the end of each semester there is a study week and an exam held on campus. The course lasts for two years. At the end, there is a graduation ceremony in NUI Galway. How much work is involved in the online diploma? Students are expected to spend between 3 and 4 hours per week online. Web-based activities and exercises will also be provided for students who wish to complement their study with additional, individual activities. What is the oral and intercultural skills module about? This course is intended to give students the ability to understand cultural differences and interact orally in a variety of everyday situation. It will also provide a brief introduction to some important aspects of Italian culture. Will I have the opportunity to speak Italian? Yes. You will be able to chat with your tutors and peers and participate in online oral discussions. We will practice pronunciation and listening comprehension. The course is communicative and interactive, so there will be ample opportunities to practice your Italian. What do the language classes cover? Students will obtain a high level of communication skills in the language (both oral and written) through a variety of practical language exercises. Great emphasis is placed on continuous assessment and feedback to students. At the end of the course, students should be able to converse in and comprehend a variety of topics and situations normally encountered in everyday situations in Italy. The syllabus includes listening comprehension, grammar and vocabulary exercises, group and pair work, videos and a variety of written material, participation in forum and chat.
