Reading Comprehension Strategy Strategy: Read-Aloud Appropriate Grade Level: Lower Elementary – Middle School Procedures/Steps: A read aloud or shared reading is one of the best ways for students to hear fluent reading. Teachers should read to their students at least 5 minutes in class everyday. Reading should not come from the text book, it should be done for one of the following reasons: Building student’s background knowledge Providing them with interesting vocabulary words Assuring that they hear fluent reading During a Read-Aloud Students should be doing one of the following: Listening to the teacher read Following along as the teacher reads Examples of a Read-Aloud: Read a picture book Look at a newspaper article Comments and/or tips: Read-Aloud literacy strategies build and extend background knowledge for students who are lacking it.
