Handwriting Sign-In Strategy Appropriate Grade Level: Pre-K - K Procedures/Steps: 1) Take individual pictures of all the students in the class with a digital camera 2) Make a poster board with the name of the activity the sign-in sheet will be used for and a picture of that activity 3) Divide the poster board up into 3 sections 4) One section will be for the numbers 1-5 or more, the middle section is for the student’s photos, and the last section is for the student’s signature. 5) When children want to sign up for the activity, they take their picture and put it on the first number (this can be attached with Velcro), or the next available number, then they sign in their name Comments and/or tips: The sign-in strategy can be used when students arrive to class or leave for the day. It can also be used for activities in the classroom that can only be used by a limited number of people at a time. When young children are given the opportunity to write their name for a specific purpose, such as signing in their name when arriving into class, they learn valuable writing skills. By tracking the sign-in sheets throughout the year, the child’s writing development can be observed. Source: Godt, P., Hutinger, P., Robinson, L., & Schneider, C. (1999).
