Dear CANCAS Members: I hope that all of you have had a great start to the academic year. The Executive Committee of the Collegiate Academy of Science of the North Carolina Academy of Science has been hard at work this year planning the upcoming events for the 2012-2013 academic year, and is excited to see things coming together. I am happy to announce that this year the Fall Workshop is to be held at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina on October 27th. On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to cordially invite all members of CANCAS, as well anyone who expresses an interest in the sciences, to attend. The events that we have planned for this year’s Fall Research Workshop should prove to be both beneficial and enjoyable to all participants. We intend to have sessions related to research skills, internship and study abroad opportunities, and career preparation. Student participants will have the opportunity to have their resumes evaluated and critiqued, as well undergo mock interviews. There will also be two discussion panels comprised of students and professional school admission representatives, who have agreed to answer any questions regarding career and research opportunities. There will be ample opportunity for networking opportunities during the luncheon, social gathering at Guilford College, and CANCAS Board Meeting. The CANCAS Executive Committee is continually working on projects in hopes of benefitting our members, and the scientific community as a whole. This year CANCAS is trying to raise awareness of our organization so we are able to provide better opportunities for undergraduate research and scientific networking. Our key networking tools are the CANCAS website, Campus Liaisons, and CANCAS Facebook page. Our website provides members with useful information on past and future events that CANCAS members may get involved with. The website also contains information on obtaining membership, and grants that are available to students completing research projects, or planning to attend graduate school. Campus Liaisons serve as ambassadors for each of their respective colleges and universities, helping CANCAS connect with the students participating in student organizations at their home institutions. I urge anyone who is interested to make use of all of these resources. CANCAS has consistently done a great job with all of its projects. CANCAS is honored to aid in enriching the scientific community in any way that we can. I am excited to see all of you at both the Fall Workshop and this year’s annual NCAS meeting which will be held at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, in Pembroke, North Carolina. I wish you all a successful year and we look forward to seeing you! Sincerely, Jennifer Floyd CANCAS President Mount Olive College
