My involvement in the North Carolina Academy of Science came about when I arrived at
UNCG in 1992 as a new faculty member. One of my colleagues insisted that I not only join the academy also that I actively participate in the annual meetings with my students. I recall him coming to my office and personally delivering the annual meeting registration form. My enthusiasm and involvement with the academy grew from that time and it is now with great pleasure and sense of responsibility that I serve as your president for 2006-2007.
We were all pleased to hear the recent report that the North Carolina Academy of Science’s membership increased by over 30 members. This is a welcomed statistic and hopefully represents a reversal of a decline in membership. The Academy must continue to grow and increase representation from across the state. To do this, each of you must reach out to your colleagues and recruit new members, just as my colleague recruited me. Now is a great time to approach potential members especially if you attended the annual meeting. You can highlight the outstanding ethics in science panel, the fascinating keynote address on bird evolution, and the high quality presentations. Also, remember to point out the numerous opportunities for students. In March 2007 the annual meeting will be held at East Carolina
University. We want to see not only greater attendance but another report of increased membership. Mark your calendars now.
The Journal of the North Carolina Academy is in the process of being digitized and made widely accessible. This is an important advancement in upgrading our journal. However, there remains a need to increase submissions and improve quality. I encourage each of you to consider submitting an article to the journal and suggesting it as a possibility for your colleagues.
Over the past year there has been much discussion among board members as to how to enhance our presence in North
Carolina and better serve our state. At one time the public had little knowledge or interest in what they viewed as arcane scientific activity, relegated to the confines of academia. Today, scientific results are often widely reported in the public media.
Legislators are now asked to consider issues relating to global warming, stem cell research, and bioengineered organisms. As representatives of the sciences in North Carolina we envision NCAS as having a greater role in educating the public and state legislators regarding both the process of science and scientific issues relevant to the state. The board is currently working on various initiatives and considering others. If you have any ideas or comments regarding how the Academy may better serve our broader society, please email me (kskatula@uncg.edu) or any board member (emails listed on website).
I am excited and honored to serve as the president of the North Carolina Academy of Science. My goal is to ensure that our core activities and functions remain strong and that the academy grows in both membership and visibility. Thank you for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to working with you.
Karen S. Katula
President
