The Age of Napoleon – The Concordat
Discussing the Illustration:
1) This illustration shows Napoleon with a group of officials. Can you identify who these
officials are?
2) The leaders of the French Revolution acted to weaken the Catholic Church in France,
especially when they passed the laws known as the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. What
did these laws do?
3) Why do you think the revolutionary leaders passed these laws? Why did the laws anger a
great many Catholics, including many French peasants?
4) Napoleon reached a new agreement with the Pope, called the Concordat. How did this
satisfy the Pope yet also keep many of the Revolution’s changes?
5) In 1804, Napoleon became France’s great emperor. In the past, the Pope crowned
emperors in Europe. Napoleon crowned himself. Why do you think Napoleon did this?
