WATCH Internships Available for May/June - August 2016
WATCH: WATCH’s mission is to help poor and immigrant residents of Waltham to get access to services and
have a say in how things are done in our community. WATCH provides English class for immigrants, helps low
income tenants find housing, educates tenants on their rights so they can organize for better conditions and
more affordable housing, and provides free home weatherization through volunteer ‘barnraisings.’ WATCH
builds community by providing volunteer opportunities and a place where members can improve their own lives
and help make a difference in Waltham.
Our internships are unpaid but are a great opportunity for experience in a grassroots, non-profit organization
and a chance to make a difference in the lives of our low income residents.
1. Development Intern
Background: WATCH has 5 part time staff and an annual budget of $220,000. Our funding comes from
individual donors, foundations, government grants, local businesses, local churches, and banks.
Duties: Work with the Executive Director and Development Director on donor and foundation research, grant
writing, church outreach, and the Fall Fund Drive to help WATCH secure funding for its important community
programs.
This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in grassroots fundraising and grant writing that would be
valuable in a variety of settings- academic, non-profit, or business related. 5-15 hours/week.
2. Media Project Intern
Background: WATCH would like to document the stories of our members and the work we’re doing through
video and photos. We need an intern to video tape and photograph events and edit video for use on social
media.
Duties: Work with the Executive Director and Community Organizer to interview and photograph low income
tenants, English learners, Board members and document events. Intern will edit the interviews to create a film
that will be shown at the annual meeting in April. Spanish speaking a plus but not required. 10-15 hours/week
Intern will develop skills in conducting and recording interviews as well as get an opportunity to share his or her
work with the community.
For more information or to set up a time to meet, please contact Daria Gere, Executive Director, at 781-8916689 ext 200 or daria@watchcdc.org
4. Website Development Intern
Background: WATCH’s housing clinic helps hundreds of Waltham tenants a year to access community
resources, resolve issues with landlords, get help for poor living conditions, and find affordable housing.
WATCH’s website is based on Joomla platform and has a resource guide used by Housing Clinic staff and the
public on a variety of topics especially for low-income and Spanish speaking residents.
Duties: Expanded the website’s content with additional resources and links based on research guided by the
Executive Director and Housing Clinic Supervisors. No experience with website development required. 5-10
hours/week
Intern will gain experience in managing a website and become familiar with community resources in Waltham
and Massachusetts.
5. Voter Empowerment Intern
Background: With the Presidential race in 2016, WATCH wants to use this opportunity to build political power
among the low income districts in Waltham. WATCH wants to register 250 new voters to participate in the
election and to continue to be involved in local elections in the future. WATCH is joining forces with the
Waltham League of Women Voters to launch a new program this summer called 'Waltham Votes.'
Duties: Work with the Executive Director and Community Organizer to kick off the Waltham Votes voter
registration drive and oversee the entire project. Mobilize volunteer members to implement the plan including
canvassing, tabling, getting local organizations to set up voter registration kits in their work places, and
coordinating efforts with other community organizations. 10-20 hours a week. No experience needed.
Intern will gain experience in analysis of local elections, registered voter database, door to door canvassing,
volunteer mobilization, and project management.
6. ESL Program Intern
Background: WATCH teaches English to adult immigrants with weekly classes, a tutoring program, and
conversation groups. Many of our students are not literate in their native language and require a special
teaching approach. Our classes are run by volunteer co-teachers with volunteer aides and supervised by our
Program Manager. Our students come primarily from low income households with low wage workers making
the majority of our population. Many of our students are Spanish speaking but we also have students from
many other parts of the country. The English they learn is practical and based in their day to day lives.
Students learn skills that will help them talk to their doctor, open a bank account, talk to their children's
teachers, talk to clients at work, and improve their overall communication.
Duties: Work with Program manager to develop curriculum, prepare class plans, assist in classrooms, check
in on volunteer tutor pairs, and assist the Program manager in administrative duties such as registering
students, calling students on the waiting list, filing, etc.
Intern will gain experience with working with an adult immigrant population, ESL curriculum development,
hands-on work with ESL students, and program management skills.
