Discussion on Center for Applied Logistics Management
Space for center
•
Two possible locations in the Meadowood North building.
•
Brian will move his office to the new location.
Mission statement
•
Handout distributed to discuss the center’s mission statement.
•
Two educational paths for students: the BAS degree and the Associates degrees or Certificate programs.
Training/Workshops
•
CALM would train the workforce in Logistics through workshops and seminars, and non-credit classes.
•
Training on Internships would also be provided to make sure companies involved understand how to utilize interns
and how Interns can have an impact on people, management and business. This would help interns get the most
out of their internship and companies get the most out of their interns.
•
Teach mechanics of Internships in small groups on how companies gain value and how students gain value.
•
Seminars on leadership should be offered early in the training process.
•
Examples of impact from interns who are asked to look at a problem and find a solution (ex: creating a door in a
wall eliminating forklift drivers from going around the building saving 15 thousand miles/year).
•
Using our Capstone courses* which are project based classes (LOM 490 Field Study and Research or LOM 491
Internship) to engage students in problem solving. *Send copies of syllabi to board members.
•
CALM’s value is for the community.
o
•
Students educated and trained here can stay and work in Reno as it continues to grow.
Tuition reimbursement from companies would play a key part in creating pathways for students. Important to
stress the cost to benefit ration for companies who invest in their students.
Other resources
•
EDAWN can help us and we can help EDAWN by having the structure in place to train workers in our community.
Can Nancy McCormick help promote and support CALM training in logistics. Explore with EDAWN the possibility that
tax benefits could be part of a company’s tax relocation benefit package for providing tuition reimbursement for
TMCC CALM or Logistics programs, and follow up with companies on performance and use of education stipends for
their employees.
•
Brian will present at EDAWN’s May meeting.
