Course Description:
Course will familiarize students with materials management and its importance to the supply
chain. The importance of demand planning, logistics and physical distribution will be
highlighted. Students will be exposed to the tools of materials management and the managerial
decisions related to them.
Learning Outcomes:
 Understand the importance of materials management to the supply chain
 Understand the role of distribution and logistics management to the supply chain
 Understand key decision making criteria for materials management in the supply chain
Assessment:
Learning outcomes will be assessed with assignments such as tests, case studies, experiential
exercises.
Topics:
This course covers all elements of distribution and logistics management including physical
distribution, warehouse selection, material handling, packaging, order fulfillment, customer
service, inventory management, receiving, production stores, and returned goods. The course
will also address key technology issues such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), bar coding,
electronic data interchange (EDI), electronic commerce (e-commerce), and distribution resource
planning (DRP).
*Upon completion of course students can sit for APICS basic supply chain exam in order to
obtain a Basic Supply Chain Management (BSCM) certificate
