CourseGoalsandAssignments
Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:measurewaterquality
parameters(pH,solublesalts,alkalinity);measuresubstrate/soilphysicalparameters(total
porosity,airfilledporosityandcontainercapacity);measuresubstratechemicalparameters
(pHandsolublesalt);selectandcalibratemetersusedinnutritionaldiagnosis;interpretwater
analysisreports;interpretsoilanalysisreports;makerecommendationsforimprovingcrop
growthbasedondatacollectedinthefield.
Thiscourseisdividedintothreemodules(seeschedule).Eachmoduleconsistsoffour
recordedlectureswithrelatedreadingassignmentsandapractical.Eachweek,studentswillbe
responsibleforcompletingthereadingassignment,andwatchingthenarratedpresentation.
Eachweekstudentsareexpectedtocompleteanassignment(seelateassignmentpolicy).
Discussionposts:DiscussionpostsmustbecompletedbySundayat5pmET.Discussionposts
shouldbewellwrittenandaddresstheissueorquestionbeingdiscussed.Allpostsshouldbe
madewithinintheweekassigned.Discussionswillbegradedonthequalityandtimelinessof
theresponse(seediscussiongradingrubricattachmentundersyllabustab).Eachstudentis
expectedtocommentonthreefellowclassmates’posts.Discussionpostswillbeacceptedup

Findandshareaproblem:Youneedtofindanutritionalproblem;diagnosetheproblem;
suggestthesolution;andthenpreparearecordedpracticalthatcanbesharedwithyour
classmates(andpossiblywiththeundergraduates)
Challengeassignment:Duringthesemester,theinstructorwillissuechallenges.Youmay
workwithyourclassmatestocomeupwithananswerbuteachstudentmustsubmitareport.
Reportsshouldbewrittenfollowingtheguidelinesintherubricattachedtothechallenge
question.Eachchallengeisworth25points
Practical:Studentswillbegivenacropwithanutritionalproblemaswellasotherpertinent
data(waterquality,fertilizationandirrigationpractice,substratephysicalandchemical
parameters)andthestudentwillbeaskedto:1)determinethenutritionalproblem,and2)
developarecommendationorsolutionfortheproblem.
Scholar’sIgnite:TheScholar’sIgniteVideoPresentationisanexcitingandfunassignment
designedtoprovideanopportunityforyoutogenerateawareness,stimulatethought,and
inspireyourpeerswithhorticulturaltopicsorideasthroughashort1-slide,3-minute
multimediapresentation.Youwillberequiredtoselectatopic,prepareapresentation,and
present/uploadyourworktoyourpeers.Thisassignmentissimilartopresentationsand
competitionsheldatscientificconferencesandotheracademicinstitutions.
Tocompletethisassignment,youwillberesponsibleforfulfillingthefollowingtasks:

1. Selectapresentationtopictoresearchandreview.Thetopicshouldbeselectedfroma
listprovidedbyyourinstructor.Asanalternative,youmaydevelopanideaoridentifya
topictopresenton;however,priorapprovalfromyourinstructorisrequired.
2. Developa1-slide,3-minutepresentationusingcomputersoftware.Yourinstructormay
requestuseofspecificsoftwareforcompletionofthisassignmentorprovideyouwitha
listofsoftwarealongwithinstructionalvideosontheiruse.Thepresentationshould
havelimitedtextandrelyuponpictures,tables,orgraphstoconveyyouridea(s).
Rememberthatyourpresentationshouldbedevelopedforadiverseaudience,thus
presentedinformationshouldbecomprehensibletoindividualswithoutexpertiseinthe
subjectarea.
3. UploadyourpresentationwithinCanvas.

Nutritionalproject:Eachstudentalsowillberesponsibleforanindependentnutritionalproject
(seeprojectdescriptionandgradingrubricundersyllabustabonclasswebsite).Forthe
project,studentsneedtoidentifyaplantnutritionalproblemattheircurrentlocation.Plant
nutritiondiagnostickitsthatincludeapHmeter,solublesaltmeter,lightmeter,anddiagnosis
forms(alsodownloadablefromtheclasswebsite)arelocatedatFortLauderdaleREC,MidFloridaREC,PlantCity,MiltonandGainesville(environmentalhorticulturedepartment)and
maybecheckedoutfor48hours.Thisprojectisworth100points.Thegradingrubricis
availableundertheassignmenttabontheclasswebsite.
Gradesforallassignmentswillbepostedsevendaysafterthestudentturnsthemin.Ifthe
instructorcannotreturntheassignmentwithinthistimeframe,theinstructorwillnotifythe
