Puritans: In 1625 when Charles I became the king of England, he decided to rule
without Parliament and to suppress Puritanism. When Puritan ministers were
deprived of their pulpits, the dissenters turned their thoughts to America. In 1630,
17 ships with about 1000 Pwitans settlers sailed for Massachusetts. During t6.

themselves as members of the Anglican Church. Puritans had stict rules that
governed their iives. Some individuals would challenge their ideas and puritans
would subject wrongdoers to public ridicule.
Quakers: Quakers were considered religious radicals in Engiand because they
believed that paid clergy were unnecessary and that every person could know God's
will through his or her own "inner light." William Peen started the Quakers colony
in America. He was the son of a British Admiral and had joined the Quakers when
he was student at Oxford. Senled "Penn"sylvania and offered religious freedom and
tolerance..
Salem Witch Trials: Some young girls in Salem, Massachusetts were accused of
being witches. They spent a lot of time in the company of a slave girl who was
thought to have magical powers. In response to the accusation against them, the
girls accused residents of the viilage of witchcraft. Many people lv-ere tried
convicted of practicing witchcraft .
