Overall numbers for the two core Journalism courses for the last two academic years indicates a decline in student demand. The 53 students who enrolled in the Journalism courses in 2011-12 is the lowest number of students for the last three years. Opportunity Analysis: (successes, new curriculum development, alternative delivery mechanisms, interdisciplinary strategies, etc.) While there are a few opportunities available for partnership with local press organizations (TV, radio, and newspaper), the college has not invested the resources necessary to capitalize on these opportunities. On the one hand, the college cannot justify investing additional resources in the Journalism program given the low student interest; the Journalism classes are taught by an adjunct faculty member. On the other hand, the adjunct faculty member cannot be asked to try to build the program to a level which would garner additional student interest. Summary of Program “Health” Evaluation: (including consideration of size, scope, productivity, and quality of outcomes) Without the labor of a full-time tenure track instructor to build the program toward viability, the Journalism program will not succeed. A fulltime tenure track instructor in Speech/Journalism was hired several years ago, but that instructor has refused to work in the Journalism program. At this point, Speech and Journalism are managed in two separate academic departments.
