Cells Characteristics of living things All living things: 1) Obtain their energy through food – plants manufacture their own food through photosynthesis (autotroph) while animals obtain their food by eating other things (heterotroph) Characteristics of living things 2) Respire – breakdown and use of the energy contained in foods Characteristics of living things 3) Respond to their environment – plants turn towards the sun, animals can move around to obtain food and avoid danger Characteristics of living things 4) Excrete – produce and get rid of waste 5) Are able to repair themselves 6) Grow and reproduce Characteristics of living things 7) Have a limited life span The cell theory 1) All living things are made up of one or more cells. 2) The cell is the simplest unit that can carry out all life processes. 3) All cells come from pre-existing cells. What is a cell? • Cell: the basic unit of life • Each cell contains smaller parts called organelles which have specific functions within the cell. Cellular energy • All cells use energy • Cellular Respiration occurs in animal cells in order for the organism to break down food (glucose) into useable energy (ATP)
