THE NEW TRANSLATION –
‘And with your Spirit’
One
of
the
first
things
we
will
notice
with
the
new
translation
is
that,
when
the
priest
says
‘The
Lord
be
with
you’,
we
now
say
‘And
with
your
spirit’.
When
the
Mass
was
translated
in
the
early
1970s,
English
was
one
of
only
two
languages
that
did
not
translate
it
as
‘your
spirit’
whereas
all
the
other
languages
followed
the
original
Latin
of
the
liturgy
and
the
Greek
of
the
New
Testament.
This
is
a
very
biblical
response:
Paul
concludes
four
of
his
letters
with
a
very
similar
expression.
For
example,
at
the
end
of
his
Second
Letter
to
Timothy,
Paul
ends
by
saying,
‘The
Lord
be
with
your
spirit.
Grace
be
with
you’.
This
liturgical
response
is
only
used
when
addressing
an
ordained
minister
–
someone
who
has
received
the
sacrament
of
Holy
Orders
(a
bishop,
priest
or
deacon).
For
this
reason,
the
early
Christian
writers
known
as
the
“Fathers
of
the
Church”
saw
it
as
a
sign
of
the
different
gifts
received
by
priest
and
people:
the
Holy
Spirit,
received
at
Baptism,
enables
the
congregation
of
Christ’s
faithful
to
recognise
the
special
configuration
to
Christ
that
the
same
Holy
Spirit
gives
to
the
Church’s
leaders.
If
you
think
about
it,
Christians
have
been
celebrating
the
Eucharist
with
this
dialogue,
‘The
Lord
be
with
you’,
‘and
with
your
spirit’
for
2000
years!
In
every
108
Mass,
we
are
united
with
all
the
saints
in
heaven,
and
now
we
will
be
using
the
same
language
patterns
that
they
did.
So
the
new
translation
will
bring
unity
to
this
response
in
all
the
languages
of
the
world
–
and
with
all
previous
Catholic
generations.
Don’t
forget

our

the
first

p.m.
to
8:30
p.m.,
and
the
second
session
is
on
October
30.
The
second
presentation
will
build
upon
the
first,
rather
than
duplicating
material
previously
covered,
so
please
be
sure
to
attend
both
instalments!
