GRADE 8 GIRLS’ GROUP Cardinal Newman Catholic Elementary School is pleased to present the "Grade 8 Girls’ Group" which has garnered a wonderful response and is set to begin the first week of March. This after‐school program will promote confidence, positive communication, stress management strategies and introduce ways to support a healthy lifestyle. Each session will focus on a particular theme and the girls involved will work collaboratively on arts based activities. The Girls’ Group was made possible through the generous funding from a Dufferin‐Peel Innovation Grant, as well as the profits made through the Cookie Crew Treat Thursday program. Thank you to all the girls who have registered for this program! We look forward to our sessions! We are very grateful to the staff who will run this program: our Grade 8 teacher, Ms. Sequeira, our Social Worker, Ms. Budd and our Child and Youth Worker, Ms. Farra. BOYS, BOOKS & BASKETBALL PROGRAM This year some of our intermediate and primary students will have the opportunity to participate in our Boys, Books & Basketball program. This program will allow some of our intermediate and primary boys to work on their reading together. By reading and discussing books together they can help develop important reading skills such as decoding, reading fluency and reading comprehension. After spending some time reading, the boys will get to cooperate and develop team building skills through a game of basketball. This will create a great leadership opportunity for a number of our intermediate boys and a great mentoring opportunity for some of our primary boys. More details to follow. With special thanks to Ms. Moniz‐Baptista and Mrs. Kastoris for their leadership with this opportunity. JUNIOR BASKETBALL Congratulations to our basketball teams! The students have been working diligently over many lunch hours. On February 17th, our Junior Boys won the BNE tournament and went on to a second tournament on February 26th where the boys came first again and brought home another banner! With heartfelt thanks to our Junior Girls’ coaches Ms. Moniz‐Baptista and Ms. D’Aguanno and our Junior Boys’ coach, Mr. Zubac. Their tireless efforts and dedication have afforded our students these wonderful opportunities. SKATES AND HELMETS NEEDED Our Grades 4‐8 students are booked for skating at Earnscliffe over the coming weeks. Students are required to wear proper skating helmets. If you have a spare helmet or skates (sizes 6,7 and 8 are needed most), please consider loaning to our students. Bicycle helmets, unfortunately, are not permitted by Earnscliffe. With special thanks to Mr. Nasato and Mrs. Crowley‐Weber for organizing this opportunity for our Junior‐Intermediate students and to all Grade 4‐8 teachers for their support. iENGAGE – BULLYING PREVENTION FOR PARENTS Holy Spirit Elementary Catholic School Council hosts their PRO Grant‐funded presentation of Anthony McLean and his bullying message on Thursday April 9th, 2015 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Anthony delivers a powerful presentation for parents looking for practical strategies to keep their kids safe, this upbeat and interactive presentation is packed with useful resources. Some of the areas he will touch upon include: (i) How to protect our kids from bullies (without turning our kids into bullies!); (ii) How to get kids to open up and talk about what’s happening at school; (iii) How to break apart cliques and (iv) How to keep kids safe online. Location: Holy Spirit Elementary School, 25 Bloomsbury Ave, Brampton, ON, L6P 1W9. The Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents and negative behaviours. The student can simply ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s website to fill out the report. The report will then be directly emailed to the principal and vice‐principal to be dealt with accordingly. It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the school. More details to follow indicating when the link to The Online Reporting Tool on our website will be available. CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETINGS Our Catholic School Advisory Council will be holding their meetings at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. All parents are invited to attend. Our Catholic School Advisory Council is working hard on our new Parent Resource Library. There will be a variety of books available to our parents. A letter will be sent home with your child regarding access and will detail the books available. VOLUNTEERING ON TRIPS & AT SCHOOL Volunteers working in the school and supervising any school trips MUST have a valid Criminal Background Check. The original must be brought to the main office for verification and photocopying by office staff. A copy will be kept on file at the school and the original returned to you. Application forms for Criminal Background Checks can be obtained through the school office. Volunteers must complete the application and take to the police station for processing. ANNUAL OFFENCE DECLARATION FOR VOLUNTEERS WITH A VALID CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK All volunteers with a valid Criminal Background Check on file are required to complete an annual offence declaration. Please complete the attached Annual Offence Declaration for Volunteers form and return it to the school office. YARD SUPERVISION A reminder to the parents and students that yard supervision does not begin until 9:00 a.m. Students who arrive early at school will have to remain outside. Some parents drop off their children as early as 8:45 a.m. This practice puts your children at risk. We respectfully remind you that it is your responsibility to ensure appropriate care for your children prior to 9:00 a.m. PIZZA AND SUBWAY LUNCHES Pizza Days continue to run on Tuesdays. The cost is $2.00. 2015 Sub Days are March 26th, April 16th, May 21st, and June 18th. Order forms will be sent home each month. SEVERE FOOD ALLERGIES As has been mentioned previously, we continue to ask for your co‐cooperation in keeping our school safe for all our students and staff. Several students and staff in our school suffer from severe, life threatening allergy to all nuts, peanuts, nut products, shellfish, etc. This is a medical condition that causes severe reaction to certain allergens that can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, we require your continued cooperation in sending foods to school with your child that are free from peanuts, nuts or their by‐products, and nut‐substitute products. We cannot guarantee that any classroom is nut free, but we are attempting to minimize exposure and keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. We appreciate your help and support in this important issue. We ask you to please refrain from sending birthday and special occasion edible treats into your child’s class. Instead, perhaps you could recognize a special event by sending in a non‐edible treat e.g., pencils, stickers, notebooks. Another alternative is to commemorate your child’s birthday by purchasing a book for donation to our school library. Should you wish to do so, we will be happy to place a sticker with a sentiment similar to: “Donated by Noah Brooks in honour of his 5th birthday on October 18th, 2015”. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding. SNOW AND ICE As snow and ice are a reality in the winter months, we review our rules about NOT throwing snow or ice at school regularly. Please review with your child the dangers of this and that it is NOT allowed at school. The school rule is that snow stays on the ground – no snowballs, kicking snow or any other activity with snow or ice that could be harmful. The safety of all of our students is our number one priority. Students are reminded that throwing snow or snowballs on school property is strictly prohibited. Although it may seem to be a fun activity, the practice of throwing snow is unsafe and can lead to serious accidents. Students failing to comply with this school safety rule will be subject to serious consequences. Using snow to make forts or snow people is a wonderful way to enjoy winter. Students are encouraged to be respectful of what others have created. It should be noted that these structures are temporary and staff on supervision duty are not expected to help safeguard these as their primary responsibility is to ensure student safety. LATE ARRIVALS & EARLY DEPARTURES As in the past, we ask that you call the school on the days that your child will be absent or late. This is a safety precaution that can save precious moments should there ever be an emergency situation. We thank you for your continued support in following this procedure. If your child will be late or absent from school, it is very important that you notify the school before 9:00 a.m. by leaving a voice mail message on the attendance line at 905‐792‐2268 and pressing 1, for the attendance voice mail. You should speak clearly and leave the child’s FIRST and LAST NAME, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence or lateness. Any student arriving at school late is required to come to the office to request a late slip. This allows us to change our attendance information, and mark your child late, rather than absent. It is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines. We respectfully request that whether students walk or are driven to school, that they are at school before the bell rings at 9:15 a.m. DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER Now that the cold weather is upon us we respectfully remind you to ensure that your children come to school dressed warmly to participate in recess activities. When weather conditions are severe we may reduce the outdoor play time, or have indoor recess entirely, but fresh air and exercise are vital components for successful learning, so we will endeavour to have children play outside whenever possible. Help your children by having them come to school appropriately dressed with scarves, hats and mittens. As well, all students should have indoor footwear at school. This is essential in case of an emergency evacuation. The students will not have time to change their footwear. We also recommend that students keep extra clothing such as socks and pants at school in case their original clothing gets wet. INDOOR / OUTDOOR SHOES The students should have a pair of indoor shoes to wear at school in class and for gym. Outdoor shoes/ boots will be kept for outdoor use only and out of the classrooms in order to reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will assist our custodial staff in keeping the school clean. Thank you for your co‐operation. INCLEMENT WEATHER CANCELLATIONS During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio and television stations:  VIRGIN RADIOFM99.9  FM Z103.5  FM93.1  CHUM AM1050  CFTR AM680  FM Q107  CFNY FM102.1/AM640  CHIN FM100.7/AM1540  CJCL AM590  CBC99.1  CHFI FM98.1  CITYPULSE  CFRB AM1010  GLOBAL NEWS  EZ ROCK FM97.3  CTV  CJBC (FR) AM860 We will be communicating one of four standard messages to the radio stations. Individual schools will be notified if this cancellation affects their school. 3.“THE DUFFERIN‐PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES ARE CANCELLED.” This means that: ALL Transportation services provided by the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board and The Peel District School Board, including buses, vans and taxis have been cancelled for the entire day. 4.“THE SCHOOLS AND OFFICES OF BOTH THE DUFFERIN‐PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AND THE PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ARE CLOSED.” This means that: ALL Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board ad Peel District School Board schools and offices are closed to all students and staff. BUS INFORMATION Please check the Region of Peel’s Transportation Department’s websites (www.stopr.ca and https://businfo.stopr.ca/) to check for delays and cancellations. All concerns and complaints regarding bus transportation are to be made directly to the S.T.O.P.R. at 905‐890‐0614. AFTER‐SCHOOL: BUS AND NON‐BUS STUDENT AREAS Bus students are reminded that they MUST have their bus tag attached to their backpack in an easily visible location so teachers can check as you board the bus. Also, bus students MUST line up, FDK‐Grade 8, in front of their assigned pylon in gym 1 IMMEDIATELY at the bell. Students who fail to follow this rule may have bus privileges suspended. Non‐bus students waiting to be picked up at the end of the day are reminded that they must wait in the fenced courtyard area in front of the library windows. Presently there is a great deal of student traffic causing congestion at the front of the school. NO students should be waiting anywhere on the sidewalk area in front of the school. The sidewalk area must be clear for the safe boarding of bus students. PLASP CHILD CARE SERVICES PLASP Child Care Services operates Before and After School Programs at this school. The Before School Program operates from 7:30 a.m. until school start. A nutritious breakfast is served daily. The After School Program runs from the end of the school day until 6:00 p.m. Children participate in recreational activities, are served a nutritious snack daily and have time for homework. 2nd ANNUAL FAMIILY NUMERACY NIGHT @ CARDINAL NEWMAN C.E.S. Session Details Below: Kindergarten Numeracy (Room 27)
Hosted by Mrs. Alati, Mrs. Battista, Mrs. DiCarlantonio, Mrs. Wadden
As part of the Kindergarten curriculum, children have the opportunity to engage in hands-on exploration through concepts of
play. In this session, key numerical concepts such as counting, number recognition, and 1:1 correspondence will be modeled
through the use of mathematical manipulatives. The session will demonstrate that mathematical concepts can be explored
and investigated through different ways using found materials that are readily available (i.e., dice, playdough, blocks). At
home and school students should have the opportunity to reflect on and extend their understanding of mathematical concepts
through interactive and meaningful ways.
Primary Math Games (Room 18)
Hosted by Mrs. Crowley-Weber, Mrs. Caputo-Rostami, and Mr. Palmieri
This primary math station will focus on mathematical games that parents can use at home, with their children, to help support
them with basic math concepts being taught in the classroom. The games that will be presented will be engaging, interactive
and fun for all families.
Junior Math Games (Room 16)
Hosted by Mrs. Alati and Mrs. DiCarlantonio
Parents will have the opportunity to play some Junior card games in room 16. These simple, yet fun card games can be
played at home with children in grades 4, 5 and 6. Parents will have the opportunity to see, just how far a deck of playing
cards can be used to teach a variety of math concepts. Learning math strategies using different manipulatives is an excellent
way to further a child’s understanding.

Geometry
DevelopingMindsetsthatPromoteGrowth
The ability to identify and describe
shapes, sizes, positions, directions, and
movement is important in many work
situations, such as construction and
design, as well as in creating and
understanding art. Becoming familiar
with shapes and spatial relationships in
their environment will help children
grasp the principles of geometry in
later grades.
Whatdowemeanby“mindset”?
Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for
ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior and
influence our responses to daily events.
- Dr. Robert Brooks
TipsforFosteringaGrowthMindset:
Tip#2.Emphasizethejoyoflearningforlearning’ssake.
 When discussing school, talk about learning as a
means for personal reward, growth, intellectual
challenge, and opportunity – not a means to earn a
grade or get into a great university.
Family Math Activity K – 3:
Shapes of different
dimensions and their properties
can be described mathematically.
 Use shape stickers to make a shape picture. Try
to use as many different shapes as you can.
Describe your picture and the shapes in it. Tell
why you used those shapes.
Family Math Activities 4‐6: Symmetry  With your child, identify all the symmetrical capital
letters. Have your child sort the capital letters according
to whether they have one line or two lines of symmetry.
 Go on a symmetry hunt. With your child, find shapes,
objects, patterns and designs around your home that have
lines of symmetry. (Look at wallpaper, floor tiles, pictures
and designs on packaging)
Grades 7 & 8: Continuing
the Conversation About
Money Decisions!
Let’s discuss some factors affecting “Money
Decisions”…
 Ask your child to think about and identify a movie, TV show, video game, website, app, or book that deals with money.  Ask, what is the key message about money that your child got from their experience? Discuss some of the ‘lessons’ that could be learned from the experiences your child has had. Note: Consider factors that affect money decisions:
emotions, friends and peers, customs, traditions,
habits, family members, latest styles and fads,
advertising, incentives, and personal values.
