ESSAY: FINAL REMINDERS FORMAT Be sure you have followed proper essay format (see notes, handouts and editing sheet) for all components / explanations Be sure your thesis is clear, concise and ONE sentence (the last of your introduction) CONTENT Be sure all arguments, evidence and analysis focus on the novel Remember to select relevant quotes from the novel that effectively support your arguments and thesis. Analysis: Always explain how your quote illustrates / proves your argument and thesis; add any insights your may have STYLE Write your essay in present tense (ex. “Charlie is a victim . . . ) Use formal English (ie. no slang, cliches etc.) Do not use contractions (ex. use “have not” instead of “haven’t”) Do not use first person or personal pronouns (ex. “I think”, “me”, “you”, “we”) Italicize and capitalize titles (novels, plays); use quotation marks for poems and songs LAYOUT Write using MLA format. Double space the following: Name Teacher Course Date (D, M, Y) Last Name – page # (top right corner of every page) TYPE; DOUBLE SPACE; 12 font; Ariel or Times New Roman QUOTES (textual evidence): Document all sources (esp. primary source – ie. The novel or play) using quotation marks and parenthetical documentation (author page) or (act scene lines) WORK(s) CITED LIST must be included.
