The Lovely Bones
Franny tells Susie, "When the dead are done with the living, the living can go on to other things"
(145).
Task: This assignment requires you to illustrate your understanding of The Lovely Bones
through analysis and interpretation of one particular aspect. You will need to develop a
thesis about that aspect and support it through reasoning, direct quotation, paraphrase,
summary and explanation. You have a range of topic choices to choose from. You may
develop one of your Novel Study Questions or expand on a class discussion about any of
the following topics:





A theme that reappears in the novel
Relationships between characters
The meaning of the title
A developing character
A cultural attitude




To formulate a thesis concerning a topic in the novel that interests you.
To support that thesis with convincing reasons.
To provide development and support for your thesis.
To demonstrate your ability to quote, paraphrase, summarize, and interpret the
work.
To present your essay in correct MLA format by proper use of in-text
citations and works cited page.
Purpose:

Length & Format: 3-4 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman Font. You will
present your essay and drafts in a folder on the final due date. Failure to follow these
requirements will result in grade percentage deductions from the final score of the essay.
Rough Draft Due: Wed 10/13 four (4) typed stapled copies bring to class to exchange
w/group members. Needs to be 2-3 FULL pages min. At the back of EACH draft
attach a copy of Book Analysis Critique.
Final Draft Due: Wed 10/20 Must follow Format for Turning In Final Draft -so review it and
make sure you have ALL process documents and elements as described in your folder!
Voluntary Portfolio Revision Draft: Wednesday 11/3 (For grade improvement opportunity,
must follow Port Revision format guidelines under Projects, otherwise don’t bother.)
