Strength Training: and Cardiovascular Fitness
This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of
activities pertaining to strength training and cardiovascular conditioning, that have the potential to
engage students' interests throughout their lives.
Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills, and
will be given opportunities to improve their physical fitness level and develop a healthy active
lifestyle.
Students taking PAF401 should be committed to daily vigorous activity and positive health
behaviours!
Student Expectations
-participate actively in all activities
-follow class rules, routines, and uniform policy
-demonstrate personal competence in applying movement skills and principles
-demonstrate improved physical fitness
-demonstrate responsibility for their personal safety and safety of others
-use decision-making and goal-setting to promote healthy active living
-demonstrate an ability to use stress management techniques
-demonstrate the social skills required to work effectively in groups and develop positive
relationships with their peers

Course Fee
There will be a course fee of $15 to cover the cost of going to a Fitness Facility.

Unit One- Principles of Weight Training
Unit Two- Weight Training/Fitness Activities
Unit Three- Advanced Program Development
Unit Four- Nutrition
Unit Five- Fitness Testing
Evaluation
Your achievement in this course will be evaluated throughout the semester and be reported under the
following categories and weightings:
Knowledge/understanding
Thinking/Inquiry
Communication
Application
20%
15%
15%
50%
These achievement levels will account for 70% of your final grade. A final evaluation will comprise
30% of your final grade. The final evaluation will take place both in the last week of the semester
and during the exam period.
Final Evaluation(30%)
The final evaluation will consist of two parts:
1) A culminating activity in which the student will demonstrate their understanding
of the concepts learned throughout the semester.
2) A final knowledge test that will be written in the exam period
Assessment
Along with the above evaluation, each student's learning skills will be assessed throughout the
semester. Each student will have opportunities to demonstrate, develop, and improve their:
-readiness to participate
-initiative
-effort
-social interaction
-respect and support for themselves and others
-attitudes and practices towards safety
A four point scale (excellent, good, satisfactory, needs improvement) will be used to report the
above learning skills under the following categories:
teamwork
organization
work habits
initiative
works independently
