The ACR Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Accreditation Program is a voluntary program
offering peer-review and evaluation of a facility’s staff qualifications, equipment, quality
control and quality assurance programs, image quality and breast dose. Image quality is
assessed, in part, through peer-review of a facility-submitted accreditation phantom
image. The phantom image is accessed by two or three independent reviewers trained by
the ACR in the review methodology. Two passing scores are required to pass the image
quality component of the accreditation process. The principles of the phantom review
process will be presented. Image scoring will be addressed. Variations related to the
different phantom types will be dealt with. Examples of passing and failing images will
be presented and discussed to illustrate the review criteria. This review should provide
practicing medical physicists with a better understanding of what makes for a passing or
failing phantom image.
Educational Objectives:
1. Review the phantom image quality component of the ACR Breast Biopsy
Accreditation Program
2. Become familiar with phantom image scoring criteria and understand differences
related to phantom type
3. Illustrate passing and failing phantom scores with examples
