Pocock Pride PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Summer is upon us. Summer is a time of renewal for both staff and students. A break from the routine affords an opportunity for staff to be with family and for many, to continue their commitment to lifelong learning. Many staff members will be going back to school to acquire new accreditation, to keep current with developments in their field of study or for personal interest. Universities offer many courses throughout the summer designed especially for teachers. Every August, Dufferin-Peel sponsors the Summer Institute. This series of seminars and workshops revolves around specific Dufferin-Peel or Ministry initiatives. Literally thousands of teachers from Dufferin-Peel and surrounding boards make a point of attending every year. This year, it will be hosted at Philip Pocock. Every year there are changes in staff. This year is no exception. Charlene Fitzpatrick and Susan Milner are retiring. Mrs. Fitzpatrick has been a long-time Pocock Staff member and the mainstay of our ESL. Mrs. Fitzpatrick started with Pocock in 1988 at the Vincent Massey campus and has helped many, many students who were newcomers to Canada and Pocock. At her retirement party, WHO TO CONTACT Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School 4555 Tomken Road, Mississauga, Ontario L4W 1J9 Telephone ................. 905-602-6172 http://w3.dpcdsb.org/POCOK Mrs. Fitzpatrick said that the decision to retire was a difficult one but now that it is made, she is greatly looking forward to spending time with her family, especially her beloved daughters who both live in England. Ms. Milner has been a Dufferin-Peel employee for over 31 years and she has served as Department Head of Social Science at Philip Pocock for the last several years. An avid world traveller, skier and golfer, Ms. Milner has enriched her geography students with her first-hand knowledge of many places around the world. We wish both Mrs. Fitzpatrick and Ms. Milner health and happiness in their new adventures. Joseph Zammit, our Department Head of Special Education, Business and Computers, is also leaving us. He has been promoted to Vice Principal and posted to Father Michael Goetz for September. In addition to his strong leadership as a department head and his involvement in board-level initiatives, Mr. Zammit has been very involved in the extra-curricular life at Philip Pocock. His energy, enthusiasm and leadership will be missed. Lastly, I encourage parents to subscribe to the PhilipPocockInfo email list. Please call the school and supply an email address where you can receive information from the school regarding news and events. Be sure to visit our Web page periodically www.dpcdsb.org/POCOK (that’s not a typo - our name had to be shortened to five characters). Thank you for your continued support of our school as we continue our mission to provide quality Catholic education to your children. Ms. Fitzpatrick has left her mark on the ESL Department. She has co-authored many ESL Curriculum Documents over the years and was the essence of the Pocock Cricket Team. As was said at her retirement, she didn’t go looking for Cricket, but rather Cricket found her. It became apparent that the extra-curricular needs of our ESL population were at the heart of her decision to coach the team. It later expanded to include students from the entire school. We thank Ms. Fitzpatrick for sharing her expertise with us andr her dedication to the ESL students for so many years. We wish Ms. Fitzpatrick many new adventures with her family in the future and continued happiness! “GEOGRAPHY IS LIFE” The Social Sciences will have a missing member in Septemberafter 31years of teaching, Sue ‘Geography is Life’ Milner, is moving onto other geographical adventures! Although her classroom adven tures are ending, Sue's love of geography will continue onwards in her many world-wide travels. Her frantic running-shoe clad feet will be missed buzzing through the halls of Pocock! She was actively involved in several aspects of Pocock life, from coaching both the Golf and Alpine Ski teams, to organizing the annual student Whistler Ski trip. We wish you all the best as you embark on your next journey! After three years of dedication as Department Head of Academic Resource, Business and Computers, we are very sad to have to bid farewell to Mr. Joe Zammit as he moves into the role of Vice Principal at Father Micheal Goetz Secondary School. Mr. Zammit has been an integral part of the Philip Pocock Community, in the role of Department Head, SAC Advisor for the 20082009 school year, and dear colleague. Mr. Zammit, thank you for your sincere commitment to our school and students. We will miss you and we wish you all the best in whatever new adventures await you! Never forget, “WE ARE A SCHOOL WITH SPIRIT!” AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! All the best from your Pirate friends at Pocock. On Wednesday, May 12, 2010 fifteen grade ten and eleven students from Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School travelled to our nation’s Capital for an overnight trip. The students were accompanied by Mr. Smalridge, our Chaplain, and Ms. Drudi, teacher and Chaplaincy Staff Advisor. The trip kicked off by checking into the University of Ottawa Residence. Students and staff visited historic sites, including the Rideau Centre, the National War Memorial, the Rideau Canal, and the Chateau Laurier. Upon arriving, students toured the historic city of Ottawa and celebrated the Sacraments of life at a mass at St. Theresa of the Child Parish. A community-building candlelight vigil followed, which celebrated the quest for creating unity and recognizing God’s precious gift of life for humanity. Students and staff had the opportunity to experience the annual Tulip Festival, commemorating Princess Margaret's birth in 1943 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. It also recognizes Canada’s influence in helping liberate the Netherlands at the end of World War II. The next day, students and staff walked to Parliament Hill where they met with 15,000 passionate citizens, including the Knights of Columbus, who prepared for the National March for Life. The annual march seeks to reopen a debate surrounding the issue of abortion in Canadian law. Protestors in the March for Life share beliefs in ensuring that pro-life campaigns continue to protect life from conception to natural death. The trip was a tremendous success and the Chaplaincy committee and Social Science Department look forward to another spiritually empowering visit to Ottawa next year. Ms. Drudi It has been a busy year for the Social Sciences Department! We welcomed two new members into our department – Ms Sarwan, teaching Geography and Careers and Ms Radman, teaching Politics and History. We will also be saying adieu to our Department Head, Ms Milner, who is planning a well-deserved retirement after 31 years of teaching – her enthusiasm and love for teaching Geography will be missed! In addition, the Social Sciences Department has been filled with many student teachers and volunteers as we helped them prepare for a career in teaching. The year has included several trips from a variety of Social Sciences courses. Grade 9 Geography visited the Hockey Hall of Fame while the Grade 10 History classes paid a visit to the Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. Meanwhile, Grade 11 Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology, along with the Grade 11 and 12 Parenting classes went to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (C.A.M.H.). In addition, the Grade 11 Ancient History and Grade 11 Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology and Sociology had a unique opportunity to visit the King Tut exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Furthermore, the Grade 11 Law classes experienced the inner-workings of the Supreme Court of Ontario at the 361 University location. To better prepare our senior students for their transition to college and/or university, the Grade 11 and 12 Parenting classes went to a lecture at Sheridan College, and our Grade 12 Human Growth and Development and Grade 12 Politics classes went to the University of Toronto, Mississauga campus, to experience university life and lectures. Have a wonderful summer and we look forward to doing it all again in September! On Saturday, May 29th, Madeline Dodds represented the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board in the NaMadeline Dodds presented her award winning speech at the Faith and Protional French Public Speaking Competition, held at the gram meeting on Monday, June 14th, 2010. In the photo from left to right: University of Ottawa. Only the 1st prize inners of the senior categories from Provincials go forward to compete at this level. As such, there were a total of 37 competitors from across Canada. Her topic was well researched, insightful and powerful. She dealt with an issue which is not only current, but deals with something that is near and dear to her…the Healthcare system, in particular the American healthcare system. Madeline not only delivered a powerful speech, but was also questioned, in French by several judges, including Etienne Manuard from the French Embassy. Her confident and thought-provoking answers impressed the judges. We are delighted to announce that Madeline won 1st place in the National Competition and aside from the title and an amazing trophy, has won a $20,000.00 scholarship to the University of Ottawa. Dufferin-Peel has gone to Nationals 5 times and 4 of the National Title Holders have come from Pocock. Madeline Dodds has made history for Pocock and Dufferin-Peel! She now joins Stéphane Hannelas, Yannick Hannelas and Adam Szulewski, on a very elite list of public speakers. We are delighted that our language students have honoured Pocock and Dufferin-Peel with their success and wish Madeline every success as she takes this experience with her, wherever she goes! We would also like to recognize the support offered to Madeline by all of her French Teachers and Coaches, in particular Madame Deborah Donahue and Madame Emanuela Polin-De Luca, Mademoiselle Monika Pawlikowska (Student Teacher) & Madame Tonia (Taylor) Bruno. On Friday, April 16, seven of our students represented Pocock at the Concours d’art oratoire, the French public speaking competition at the Dufferin-Peel CDSB. We would like to congratulate all of our participants: Sandra Wesolowska, Jannel Fontz, Madeline Dodds, Christine Nassif, Marko Platosh, Anick Karerangabo, and Kyle Diab for their effort and hard work in representing our community at this competition. Christine Nassif won 3rd place in the Jr. Extended French category and Kyle Diab won 3rd place in the Sr. Français Plus category. 2nd Place in the Sr. Extended French category went to Marko Platosh. We would like to further congratulate Madeline Dodds for winning 1st place in the Sr. Immersion Category. Madeline also represented Pocock at the Provincials at Glendon College on May 9th. Our French public speaking team from left to right: Madame Deborah Donahue, Christine Nassif, Madame Emanuela Polin -De Luca, Sandra Wesolowska, Marko Platosh, Madeline Dodds, Jannel Fontz, Kyle Diab, Anick Karerangabo, and Mlle. Monika Pawlikowska (Student Teacher) Congratulations to all our participants and winners. Félicitations à tous les participants! Way to go Pocock ! On Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 Pocock demonstrated once again the strength of our language students and our language programs. The OATI (Ontario Association of Teachers of Italan) held it’s Annual Italian Competition. The contest is always hosted by one o f the Universities where Italian is offered as a degree program. This year the contest was held at York University. Pocock had 13 participants and 7 of them brought home medals. We had 2 third place medals, 2 second place and 3 first. Special thanks go out to Signora Franca Tasciotti and Signora Emanuela Polin-De Luca for their support. 1st Place Winners: Claudia Sawon won in the Grade 12 Non-Italophone Written/Oral Category and obtained the highest overall mark on the Written exam in her category; Mario Paiero won in the Grade 12 Italophone Written/Oral Category and Filomena Cerundolo won in the Grade 12 Poetry & Prose Category for her poem “I miei genitori; fonte d’ispirazione”. The professors who evaluated the written pieces were impressed by the depth of her poem. 2nd Place Winners: Madeline Dodds won in the Grade 12 Non-Italophone Written/Oral Category and obtained the highest overall mark on the Oral Exam in her category, and Virginia Maj won in the Grade 11 Open Artistic Category. 3rd Place Winners: Luisa Santopietro won in the Grade 12 Non-Italophone Written/Oral Category, and Patricia Poblete won in the Grade 10 Non-Italophone Written/Oral Category. This year’s competition was particularily close and all students should be extremely proud of their achievements. We have an amazing multi-lingual, multi-talented group of students at Pocock. Congratulations to all the participants and winners on a job well done! Pocock continues the tradition of Excellence! Madame Polin-De Luca’s Grade 12 Extended French class celebrated the end of the year and the end of an era by taking in the local colour and savouring “café au lait, gelato & pizza”. Bonne chance et in Bocca al lupo! God Bless you as you leave Pocock! On Tuesday, May 17th, 2010, Mademoiselle Iodice’s Grade 12 Core French , Madame Polin-De Luca’s Grade 12 Extended French , and Madame Selimovic’s Grade 9 Extended French classes had the opportunity of experiencing theatre at it’s best. Our students went to the Berkely Theatre to see a performance of “La Sagouine” as presented by the Pleiades Theatre. Our students were particularly lucky to have the legendary Viola Léger in the title role — she has made this her signature role. The play, written by Antonine Maillet, a renowned Acadian writer, is in essence a onewoman show. The play consisted of 5 vignettes or stories as told by “la Sagouine”. This unique character is a crusty old Acadian scrubwoman who is known to everyone only by her derogatory name. Despite her lowly status, she has an uncanny ability to see through hypocrisy, pretention and contradiction among her betters. Her stories spring from her observations on life in her tiny Acadian fishing village where people ranged from the lowliest of the low to the mightiest of the rich. Student were delightfully surprised and entertained by “la Sagouine”. She brought to life another time and a different culture. It was apparent that students were inspired by this old woman and the follow-up work and presentations were excellent! You may have heard that Pocock’s Europe Trips have always been extremely successful and the trip we are planning for this year promises to be just as great! We will have the opportunity of visiting three European countries that are rich in history and culture. We will start our journey in Switzerland where we will visit the cities of Zurich and Lucerne, then we continue on towards Italy where we will visit Verona, Venice, Assisi, Rome, Florence and Pisa. Our last stop will be in the south of France where students will have the opportunity to visit the land of the ‘rich and famous’ – Nice, Monaco and Eze. This trip is open to Grade 11 and 12 (Senior) students of French or Italian, or if you have an interest in History or Art—this trip is for you. Don’t miss out on the experience of a lifetime! Sign-up information is available on the website at www.explorica.ca. Once you have accessed the site, type in the TOUR CENTRE ID which is Polin-DeLuca-3987. Once you have entered the Tour Centre ID simply follow the instructions. You may sign up during the summer or save up and sign up in September… either way, don’t miss out! This is going to be an amazing trip!!!!!!!! Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Madame Polin-De Luca at (905) 602-6172 Ext 69191. This second semester has been a very busy one in the E.S.L. department. So much has happened in the last few months. The challenges of starting a new life in a different country and learning a new language have been experienced by so many of our students. Adjusting to a new high school and making new friends has also been difficult for many, but with each passing day, we have seen our students improve their language skills while developing their personal, academic and social skills here at Philip Pocock. It’s amazing for us as a staff to see complete transformations in our newcomer students in a relatively short time. What a rewarding experience! We currently have 51 students registered in ESL classes from levels A to E. This semester we would like to extend a warmhearted welcome to the following students who have enriched our school and our program: Crystal Ayazo, Carmelle Bago, Olivia Fleites Sosa. Hayeth Forero, Bahnam Jibrael, Kamil Kupnowicki, Kyung J(Louie) Lim, Anne Ng’ang’a, Esther Ng’ang’a, Karla Quinonez Perez Students in Ms. Poletto’s ESL CO/EO classes invited in a guest speaker from the Peel Regional Police, Constable Holly Faulkner, of the 12th Division, spoke about “You and the Law”. The talk dealt with current issues such as Drinking & Driving, Drugs, and Respect for Authority. Constable Faulkner was an amazing speaker and the students thoroughly enjoyed meeting her and hearing her speak. A Beautiful Poster in our Showcase Daryna Bazar, one of our graduating ESL students, writes in her grade 12 English project on marginalization and integration: “We are all newcomers, We are friendly, We are smart, We are the same people as you are. Together we can build a welcoming community” Writers Showcase 2010 Students studied the novel, To Kill a Mocking Bird, and investigated issues around stereotypes, prejudice and acceptance. We are extremely proud of the five students who have had articles published in the book Canada, You Have a Friend . This book was a product of a project by the ESL Subject Council called Writer’s Showcase 2010. Congratulations to our authors: Patryk Rodykow, Olivia Flietes, Bahnam Jibrael Laura Riano and Daryna Bazar. The book is available in our school library. So you Think you Can Spell Congrats to Carmelle Jalouber, who participated in the third annual spelling bee hosted by The Newcomers Center of Peel. She made it to the fifth round. Goodbye Pocock As I leave Pocock after 19 years as an English As A Second Language teacher I would like to say a sincere thank you to my many wonderful students and to the staff at Philip Pocock. I have been truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with you all. Ms. Fitzpatrick one can see over and over again. Thank you Pocock students for showing great audience etiquette. As the end of another school year approaches, great things continue to take place in the music department. Here are a few highlights… Walt Disney World Wonderland On Tuesday, May 25th, 90 musicians participated in a Music Festival at Canada’s Wonderland. The band, guitar and vocal ensembles played for an adjudicator who after, provided the group with some critical feedback. The group once again made their music director very proud! The rest of the day was spent enjoying the attractions of the park. Exam Preparations Back in the classroom, students worked very hard in preparing for their final playing exams and reviewing musical concepts taught throughout the year. All students worked to the best of their ability this semester and should be proud of themselves. They finally have come to realize that Music DOES make you smarter! Graduation Mass and Commencement Our final music performances for this school year were in preparation for this year’s graduation mass and Commencement Ceremony. We thank all of the wonderful vocalists and instrumentalists who took part in this very special occasion. You did a wonderful job! Even though you were all in “vacation mode,” you showed your dedication to the arts by sharing your musical talent! Attention all readers! Are you aware that here at Pocock there are 82 Walt Disney World Cast members? That’s right! From April 26th to May 2nd, our band, dance and drama students headed off to Orlando, Florida to participate in amazing educational workshops offered by Walt Disney World. It wasn’t an easy task to even get to experience this opportunity. The band and dance ensembles had to prepare audition tapes that were very specific according to the professional expectations from Disney, but we made it! All of our hard work and rehearsals really paid off! After a 24 hour bus ride, lots of movies, chit chat and various forms of entertainment, we made it to our Disney All Star Music Resort where, at a temperature of 32 degrees, we were able to enjoy the piano and guitar shaped pools as well as take a walk around the grounds where we saw musical instruments that were 2 stories high! What an unbelievable sight! The Band ensemble’s workshop consisted of learning a variety of different repertoire provided by Disney. The culminating performance involved our ensemble playing “Beauty and The Beast” and having our music put to the actual animation of this famous Disney production. The Dance ensemble’s workshop consisted of learning a variety of strenuous dance routines that are taken straight from Disney shows. Who would have thought that later that day, the dancers would see these routines n action in a show put on at Magic Kingdom! The Drama ensemble’s workshop consisted of putting to practice different improvisation techniques. This was a “cool” experience for the students as the group travelled throughout different parts of the park while other guests watched them in action. This trip would not have been possible without the help of our trip supervisors. Thanks goes to Ms. Biancucci, Ms. Brozo, Ms.Burgess, Ms. Kohut, Ms. Niewiada, Mr. Mezgec and Mr. Smalridge for taking time away from their families to be with us. On behalf of all of the directors of each ensemble, we would like to thank our “Disney Cast” for a great experience. Dufferin Peel Vocal Festival Once again, Pocock participated in this year’s Vocal Festival put on by our school board. The workshop took place at St. Roch High School where over 450 students joined together in song! It was a wonderful experience being part of 4 part harmony! Even our principal Mr. Tyndorf took time out of his busy schedule to sing with the males! Way to go everyone! Mamma Mia “Mamma Mia… here we go again… my my…. How can I resist you?!” The Abba fans in this semester’s music, dance and drama classes went to see this amazing production. Yes, it took everything in us not to break out into song and dance until the finale part of the show! A classic production that That concludes this year’s music events. On behalf of the music department, we wish all students a happy and restful summer! L. Kohut—Music Teacher Congratulations Andrew De Zen! On Tuesday, April 25, 2010, Pocock had the opportunity of participating in the awards presentation for the Annual WSIB Workplace Safety Video Contest. Our very own Andrew De Zen won 2nd place in this Provincial Contest. He received an amazing trophy and $1,500.00 for himself and another $1,500.00 for the school’s Arts Program. In the photo above: Mr. Giusto, Mr. Van Zutphen, Mr Steve Mahoney…. (Chairman-WSIB) , Andrew De Zen, and Mr. Tyndorf (Principal). Pocock students were well represented in the annual Images Art Show at City Hall which was a great success and involved 22 secondary schools in our board. Ms. McKay's grade 9 / 10 Visual Art class have created colourful, mixed media abstract paintings and have finished firing their clay mask designs which will be painted in dynamic colours. Their culminating project involved a self portrait shaded in pencil which included images in the background composition that somehow reflected their personality. The grade 11 students fired their clay reliefs and stained them with a variety of finishes. They have also completed large scale, charcoal images of faces with a dramatic lighting technique which are currently on display in the school’s atrium showcase. Their culminating project was an acrylic painting in the Surrealist style. This combined a fairly realistic landscape and an imaginative image of a human figure which somehow defies logic and creates an other worldly feeling. This was not only part of the Modern Art unit, but also tied in Classical Greece and the High Renaissance. Original Artwork by Steven Jarosz-Gr. 9 Original Artwork by Enxhi Kape-Gr. 9 Thank you Grade 12 Students for your beautiful large paintings on canvas! They were greatly admired at the “Images Art Show” at the Mississauga Civic Centre this semester. Mrs. Seaman’s Grade 9 and Beginner classes made small sculptures and were introduced to the pastel medium. They learned to blend tones using 3 themes; the rose, the tiger and the beautiful face. Job well done! Original Artwork by Julian Lee Ho On June 10th, Pocock Athletics held its 28th Annual Athletic Awards Banquet. 240 athletes, teachers and coaches attended the formal occasion to celebrate athletic achievement for the 2009/10 season. The night included a sit down dinner, team MVP/MIP awards, and Athlete of the Year honors. Senior Athletes of the Year honors for dedication and high level of achievement during their years at Pocock went to Joanna Smich and Edward Largy. The night concluded with an excellent video tribute to our Pirate athletes, put together by Mr. Sikic. Thanks to all those athletes and coaches for a great year. Rodykow It was three years in the making with a core group of determined Pocock baseball players who this year took the Tier Two Baseball League by storm. Led by Team Captain; Eddie Largy who stars as lead pitcher, base player and catcher, the boys shut down the opposing teams by never allowing any more than three runs in a game. Backed up by a slew of good pitchers, including newcomer… Brendan Butrimas, the other teams were never able to challenge the Pirate bullpen. With the opposition’s batters shut down, it was up to the Pocock men to put fear into the hearts of the other teams pitchers. And this they did as the bats kept on swinging and the Pirates scored run after run in each and every game. The season saw hits such as the Grand Slam Home Run by Josh Brown and the over the fence double by Eddie Largy. Star hitter and base stealer Josh Brown lead the team while up at bat and gave strong support as catcher in every game. New faces like Ryan White, Vince Cordi and Brendan Butrimas will ensure that the Pirates continue to challenge in the upcoming years by providing strong hitting and pitching skills. Strong fielding and batting supplied by veterans such as Mark Kolenko, Troy Black, Michael Pilotti, Tommy Tedesse and Johnny Buczny will be missed next year but a strong group of newcomers show great promise. The Pocock baseball team will again be the team to beat next year as Ryan White, Sean Canavan, Vince Arnone and Maciej Szarflarski add their fielding and hitting skills to the roster on a full time basis. The strong showing by the baseball team this year was due to the never give up attitudes of players such as Eddie Largy, Josh Brown and Justin Tabakian. Outstanding fielding skills of veterans like Troy Black, Mark Kolenko and Johnny Buczny and the bat breaking hitting skills of the whole team. Even the championship game had the Pirates scoring eight runs in the first inning as they marched on to win the game by a final score of 16 to 2, handing St. Marcellinus both of their only two losses of the season. A great year with a ROPSSAA championship that was well deserved. Congratulations guys and revel in the glory of victory! Co‐op will build your skills… The second semester of the 2009/2010 school year is coming to a close for our Cooperative Education students. Their workplace assignments gave them an opportunity to participate in and observe real work experiences. Students were able to gain high school credits while using up to date technology and equipment. The Coop students are being guided by and learning from professionals who are specialists in their field. We continue to work together with all of our business community to make sure that our students are involved in a worthwhile learning experience and that they successfully transition into the workplace. The Cooperative Education staff and students would like to thank the following Coop employers for all their efforts in providing a valuable and worthwhile Coop experience: Work one‐on‐one with a co‐worker in a program designed to meet your interests, needs, and strengths. Other benefits for registering as an OYAP student include, grants for tools and a head start on accumulation of apprenticeship hours. Call the Philip Pocock Coop office for further details. Philip Pocock C.S.S. was one of many schools, from both the Peel and Dufferin-Peel school boards, that participated in the annual Mission Employable Job Fair and Conference. The purpose of the conference was to recognize that all pathways from secondary school are valued and important. In particular, the aim was to serve and support those students who will be soon joining the world of work. Over forty employers from diverse employment fields gathered at the Pearson Convention centre to provide advice, contact information and offer job interviews to interested students. Students enjoyed the encouraging words of a motivational speaker. As well, students gathered information from a number of company representatives, who elaborated on the various skills and characteristics employers are seeking for their future workforces. Mr. Mezgec, Mr. McMahon and fourteen ambitious Philip Pocock students enjoyed an enlightening day geared towards student school- to- work transitioning opportunities. Students were able to network with representatives from a variety of industry sectors that included: Automotive/Transportation Landscaping and Horticulture Retail sales Communications Logistics Construction Manufacturing Hospitality and Tourism Personal & Health Services Mrs. Glavac's Hairstyling and Aesthetics class (TXJ 201) created a hairstyle design that reflected the Spring season and the feeling of Rejuvenation. Their masterpieces were created on a styrofoam head using ‘found’ objects (no hair) to create an Avante Garde look. Their imaginations went wild and their results were very inspiring. The alternative education program of Philip Pocock C.S.S. was one of four schools from DPCDSB that participated in a journey to Thunder Mountain from May 31st to June 4th. Thunder Mountain is a sacred Aboriginal area 25 km north of Elliott Lake. The trip was a culminating activity for the Native Studies course and fit extremely well into the curriculum. This was a unique opportunity as this was the first time that non-native students have been invited to Aboriginal sacred ground. We had 31 students and 10 supervising teachers experience the traditions of the Aboriginal community over the 5 days. We were blessed with great weather and the black flies and mosquitoes were not as fierce as expected. The food provided by our adopted Grandma Mary was fantastic and the wisdom shared by the 3 elders was invaluable. Students enjoyed Aboriginal crafts such as making birch baskets and fashioning a drum from deer hide. We partook in a true sweat lodge and many students found this to be a very spiritual ceremony. We all hiked to the top of Thunder Mountain where we took in all the beauty of the land and ate a beautiful lunch thanking our Creator with a special ceremony. Overall, this trip exceeded all our expectations. As teachers, we were amazed and privileged to witness students experience a complete transformation. - Mr. McDermott I wanted to share a poem from one our students who summed up this trip: Trip to Thunder Mountain 7 hours to come 7 hours to leave Some tired Some happy Some eager just to make it To experience the days We’ll share together Both new, and old Teachings received and developed long ago Never taking the chance To embrace what we have Allows us to reinvent ourselves From sweat lodges To dancing Beating of the heart To our feet we declared Drum making of our creation To which we shared Blended of the mind That we could make Such a taste of art Made from the soul And others of the mind Warriors and princesses Elders that bestowed Such glorious teachings Dwelling in the ambiance To experience personal respect for each other Friendships developed And families bonded as one Great times spent together Of which we established as one To bring back to the world So we all could love as one By Kristina Samuels In 2009, Philip Pocock was one of eight schools in Dufferin-Peel that introduced Link Crew to its school community, a program that promotes a safe, inclusive school environment. It is a program that encourages students to help other students succeed. Pocock’s 60 Link leaders (from grades 11 and 12) participated in a number of activities throughout the year, together with our grade 9 students, in an effort to make their transition to high school a positive one. We are pleased to announce that Pocock has begun its Link leader training for 2010-2011. An overwhelming number of students applied this year from grades 10 and 11 to serve in this mentoring role. The 53 selected Link Leaders for next year, along with the Link Coordinators, participated in a retreat on May 28th that included both faith development and Link training. Mrs. Burazin and Mr. Radic will continue to serve as Link Coordinators and are joined by Mr. Downey and MS. Dollin. We look forward to welcoming our new group of grade nine students to Pocock and another year of community building through Link leadership. In Closing… Staff B. Dillon - Teacher-Librarian H. Roane - Library Technician D. Young - Library Secretary Program While relaxation and fun are certainly important, it’s also important to keep your brain active. The summer is a great time to read those books there wasn’t time to read during the year, learn something new, do some research for a family vacation…. The point is to keep reading, thinking, and learning! Don’t forget to check out the resources and programs offered by the Mississauga Library, at http:// www.mississauga.ca/portal/residents/library. Hours Monday – Friday – 7:30 a.m. – 3:00- p.m. graphic courtesy of OSLA - written by Brenda Dillon, Teacher-Librarian We were busier this semester than ever before! I know I keep saying that, but it seems to be true at the end of every semester – we’re getting busier and busier all the time. Would you believe I already have bookings for next year? It’s true! This semester, I was fortunate enough to work with both Ms. CzeczanCosta (grade 9 Science) and Mr. Maddock (grade 11 Biology). Team teaching takes a bit more effort (in terms of planning) on the part of the teachers, but it benefits the students. This year’s winner of the White Pine Reading Award was Mostly Happy, by Pam Bustin. I hope to be able to continue to offer this program to our students and am already figuring out how to increase participation. Ms. Poletto’s ESL CO class successfully completed The Orca Challenge this semester and enjoyed both the certificates and the class party. The students, all of whom are still learning English, were challenged to read three Orca novels each. These novels, from Orca Publishers, are high interest novels written for teens, especially those teens who might find reading difficult or uninteresting. Ms. Poletto and I were pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate with our students! School transportation is provided by STOPR – Student Transportation of Peel Region. This organization serves both Dufferin-Peel and Peel schools. A STOPR website has been developed and is available to all students, parents and schools at http://www.stopr.ca The website provides information regarding transportation and includes the following features: “Policies and Procedures” “Operators” “Inclement Weather” “Which School Do I Attend” “Am I Eligible for Transportation” Fuzion, Philip Pocock’s annual charity fashion show, had another successful saché down the runway! Models, choreographers, set designers, technical crew, MCs, and teacher organizers worked feverishly to put together a show that was both entertaining and raised money for a great cause. The fashion show committee worked closely with Romero Justice Group to create a show that promoted fair trade clothing from Me to We Style: a new social enterprise that is committed to providing ethically manufactured, quality apparel for the socially-conscious consumer. Their product line is domestically produced, sweatshop-free, and made using certified organic cotton and viscose from bamboo. Students, staff, and the audience had an opportunity to purchase clothing from Me to We Style, where in turn, 50 per cent of profits were donated to Free the Children, an organization that is helping ensure a better life is created for children and their families in rural and impoverished areas across the globe. The Romero Justice Group is currently helping with a water project in their adopted village in Sierra Leone. In addition, a donation was also made to The Hospital for Sick Children, specifically to help with funding within the Paediatric Cancer Centre, in the hopes of one day finding a cure for children cancers. SickKids is one of Canada’s most research-intensive hospitals and has generated discoveries that have helped children globally. Many thanks to everyone who came out to support the show and had a helping hand in raising money for the aforementioned charities. Fuzion showcased Pocock’s own independent student designers, Olivia D’Alessandro and Toni Yongao, along with clothing from various stores in Square One. Plans are already in the making for next year’s pre-Christmas show that will feature even more designers and stores. 6 Get ready to strike a pose Pocock! Polin‐De Luca Editors: L. Ferrari S. Popowich E. Polin‐De Luca Our School Council has embarked on a unique fund raising project – the creation of a Pirate Cookbook. The School Council is collecting recipes from students, parents and staff and publishing them in a spiral bound, high quality cookbook. Our Hospitality teacher, Ms. Cecconi is reviewing the recipes for completeness. Each recipe will have the contributor’s name on it. It will make an excellent Christmas, Mothers’ Day, Easter or Fathers’ Day gift. Gail and Marie Skrinjar, members of the School Council, are spearheading this effort. They have spent a lot of time this spring drumming up support from the local community and brought many businesses on as sponsors. Please contribute your favourite family recipe. Recipe submission forms have been distributed to the students. You can also download the form from the school web page at www.dpcdsb.org/POCOK. The cookbook will be available in October or November, in time for Christmas. Please call the school to place your order. The funds raised from this project will be used to improve our sound system in the cafetorium.
