PD Day Reminder Report Cards

PD Day Reminder
Just a reminder that Monday, June 8 is a PD Day. This
day is an opportunity for teachers to consolidate
assessments and evaluations and develop end of year
reports. Report cards will be distributed on
Wednesday, June 24.
Farewells and Welcome
At the end of the school year, we can expect some
announcements about changes to staff for the
following year. This year we reluctantly say “goodbye” to a number of our staff. Mrs. Caulautti joined us
during the second week of school to teach Grade 2/3.
Because we are expecting lower enrolment next year,
she will have to be placed in another school
community where they have more growth. We will
greatly miss her enthusiasm and strong classroom
leadership. We wish her well in new challenges she
will face.
We continue to await more kindergarten registrations,
however, at this point Ms. Miranda, one of our
Designated Early Childhood Educators is also expected
to be assigned to another school community. We
greatly appreciate Ms. Miranda’s contribution to the
development of our Full Day Kindergarten program.
We wish her well as she prepares for the new school
year.
Mr. Colucci has been an integral part of our Special
Services team as our school Social Worker. For more
than twenty years, he has served our community as
well as many other schools in the area. He has chosen
this as the year for his retirement. We appreciate the
perspective he has brought to our team and the
support he has offered to many families in the area.
We wish him well in his retirement. May he enjoy the
many adventures yet to be discovered.
We have had the privilege of having Mrs. Quick as our
Vice Principal for the past two years. As of
September, she has been assigned to be Principal of
St. Benedict’s School in Orangeville. We will greatly
miss her leadership and direction. We would like to
express our thanks for all that she has done here at St.
John Paul II School. We wish her well in her new
position of responsibility.
Coming to serve our community as Vice Principal will
be Ms. Cautillo. She is currently working within the
Board’s Program Department. We are looking
forward to her contributions over the next few years.
Report Cards
Report cards will be distributed to the students on
Wednesday, June 24, 2015.
Class placements for the new school year will be
announced on the first day of school. Holding off on
class placements until the first day allows for
adjustments as new registrations come in. If there are
changes to our enrollment, it may mean that there will
be a need for re-organization. These changes will be
made on the first PD Day – Friday, September 18,
2015. We do our best to keep changes to a minimum
and support students during any transitions.
Outdoor Classroom
Our outdoor classroom is now open! It is located on
the east side of the school, beside Mrs. Kennett’s
portable. Students will be able to visit the classroom
with their teachers to engage in a variety of learning
experiences. The Eco-Council will begin planting in
our gardens next week. We are asking for donations
of fall vegetables such as squash, zucchini, beans,
corn, etc. Also, if there are any parent or student
volunteers who wish to help us with the watering of
the garden through the summer, please leave your
name at the office as soon as possible. Mrs. Farquhar
will be putting together a schedule which will be
distributed towards the end of June.
Sunscreen
Over exposure to the sun can
cause skin damage. Students
are
reminded
to
take
precautions to protect the
skin. Some recommendations
to reduce the effects of sun damage
are:
- wear protective clothing to cover the skin
- wear a hat to protect the eyes and the skin
- wear sun block, stay away from direct sunlight
where possible
- know your skin type: fair skinned people burn easier.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to review these
strategies with their children.
Volunteer Tea
We are inviting all volunteers to join us on Wednesday
June 17th from 1:55 to 2:55 for a Volunteer Tea in the
library. We are very grateful to all those who have
contributed in so many ways to our school
community. Please join us so we can express our
appreciation.
Last minute calls
We have numerous calls that come in between 2:45
p.m. and 3:00 p.m. each day asking us to let family
members know of a change in home time routine.
While we will make every effort to let a child know of
a change in plan, this should be the exceptional
circumstance in times of emergency. Please ensure
that your child knows to come to the office and wait in
case you are going to be late, or to see a neighbour in
case you are unable to be home. We strive to keep
classroom interruptions to a minimum, so these
messages should be reserved for the rare emergencies
which inevitably occur.
Proper Clothing and Protection
Warm beautiful days are fast approaching; therefore,
parents are reminded to please ensure that your child
is protected from the sun. Current fashions in clothing
may cause some problems if they are worn to school,
regardless of grade level. Please consider the
following when you purchase summer clothes:
 Observing certain modesty in dress is advised.
Extremely tight fitting clothing is not
appropriate.
 Spaghetti straps, tank tops, tube tops, muscle
shirts and halter tops are not appropriate.
Straps need to follow the “three finger rule”
 Short shorts are not permitted at school.
Modest length is expected. (approximately
finger tip)
 Tops should not be "cropped" (if they expose
the belly when the arms are raised straight
above the head, they are too short for school)
nor should they have large cut armholes, be
skin tight, or sheer.
Student Monitors
A very special thanks goes out to our lunchroom
supervisors/student monitors who have served us this
year. Mrs. Autieri and Mrs. Rossi have been here over
lunch to supervise students inside and outside. We are
grateful for their dedication in serving our community.
Any support that others may offer for the fall would
be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in
helping, please submit your name for consideration at
the office.
Grandfriends
Our Student Faith Ambassadors participated for a
sixth year in the “Grandfriends” program where
groups of students walked to the King Nursing home
and spent time with the seniors who live there. The
students and residents of the home enjoyed making
crafts and spending time together.
We wish to thank Mme Attard and Mrs. D’Amico for
their time and efforts in encouraging the students to
contribute to their larger community.
Rosary Club
Throughout the month of May, a group of students
had the opportunity to pray the Rosary at lunchtime.
Thank you to all the staff and students who took part
in praying for special intentions.
Eco-Club
Special thanks to the Eco-team which includes staff,
students and parents for their work on our front
gardens. We are now in our fifth year of renewal at
the front of the school. Special thanks to the staff and
some of our parents including Mrs. Cardoza for their
work in ensuring that the plan comes together. Great
care has been taken to include plants which are part
of our studies at school and also plants which we will
see in the spring and fall while students are in school.
Thanks to everyone for your hard work.
The
successful efforts of the Eco-team have allowed us to
maintain our status as an Eco-School.
Lost and Found
It is amazing that we have so many unclaimed items in
our Lost and Found Bin. Please stop by the school and
have a look before the end of the school year if your
child has some clothing items missing. Any remaining
will be given to charity at the end of June.
Storage of Medication
We would like to remind all parents
who have had medication stored at
the school for their child that it will
be sent home on the last day. We do
not retain medications from one year
to the next. New medications and
the proper forms for storage will need
to be filled out for the new school year. We will send
an individual reminder to all parents affected by this
policy. Please be reminded that Epi-Pens have a shelf
life of one year.
From the Library
A huge thank you to all the parent volunteers who
helped out in the library and at the book fairs this
year. Your dedication is truly appreciated by staff and
students. Thanks to Mrs. Milani for her weekly help
and to the many others who help during Book Fairs.
Book Fair: Thank you once
again for the wonderful
support given to the book Fair.
It was a huge success. Monies
raised will go towards buying
new books for the library.
All books are now due back to
the library.
Student Safety
Please remind your children to come and go directly
when travelling from home to school or vice versa.
There is greater safety when children travel with one
another. Therefore, they should not be delaying at
the playground or visiting with other families without
prior parental consent. Please discuss street safety
with your son/daughter. Once again we remind you
that the buses are for bus students only. The school
buses cannot accommodate friends who may be going
to someone else’s house after school.
First Day of School
The first day of the new school year
for students is Tuesday, September
8th. School begins at 8:30 a.m. Signs
will be posted around the school
building directing students to their
grade level meeting place. The
school office will open its doors the week of August
31st for new school registrations.
Transportation
On Saturday, August 22, 2015, the transportation
department will be holding their annual YOUNG
RIDER ORIENTATION DAY for ALL Kindergarten
children. We encourage you to participate by bringing
your kindergarten children and elementary aged
siblings to a one-hour program between the hours of
9:00 a.m. and 12 noon. Bus rides and a school bus
safety video are only part of the informative fun. All
Young Rider Days have been a tremendous success. To
confirm your attendance and preferred time slot,
please call Parkview Transit at 905-846-1070 in June
2015.
Busing Information
2014-15 BUS ROUTES

Grade 8 Graduation
At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June
18th, Father Larry Leger will
celebrate Mass at Holy Family
Church for our graduates and their
families. Following Mass, diplomas and
awards will be given as part of our Graduation
exercises. We are grateful to the Pastoral Team at
Holy Family Church for allowing us to celebrate the
achievements of our graduates at the church.
Congratulations to all our graduates and best of luck
to them in the future.
After School Security
Students must be diligent on gathering all materials
prior to the end of the school day. Once
dismissed, there is no supervision provided
to students.
Students and/or parents
should not be returning to the school after
school hours to retrieve books or belongings.
In order to ensure the safety of the workplace, no
students or parents may wander to classrooms after
school.
Similarly, please note that students who are playing
nearby after school, do not have access to school
washrooms. Once students are dismissed, cleaning
and preparations are put in place for the following day
– no students, other than those here for a specific
school activity, should be in the building at that time.
Water Safety
Children playing in and around storm sewers and
watercourses, entering storm sewers through the
outfalls, and entering storm sewers through access
covers can lead to danger. Please share with your
child(ren):
 Water flows in storm sewers and
watercourses are unpredictable and may
change quickly;
 Toxic gases may be present;
 Tragic falls could take place; and
 Access is restricted and therefore, rescue
attempts are difficult

RMOC Update
Exciting news. We are one of the
Remote Mission Operation Centres
for the stmsat – 1 satellite built by
our partner school, St. Thomas
More School in Virginia. We are
pleased to be part of this project.
Mark your calendar for August 17, 2015 for the launch
from Japan. The satellite with all our names etched in
a plaque will be part of a payload leaving on a rocket
taking supplies to the International Space Station. The
rocket launch will be viewable on the internet on the
NASA website and then a later deployment of the
satellite will occur from the International Space
Station. We are looking forward to tracking the
satellite in the fall and capturing some images of earth
as it passes over us. We have been working closely
with Dr. Sallaberger from Canadensys in trying to
arrange for an astronaut to visit in late September.
Our School Council is arranging an evening Star Party
for the beginning of October to view the moon and
any planets that can be seen at that time of the year.
Stay tuned for further details.
Please remember to notify the office
Please let us know if your family will
be moving out of our school area over
the
summer months. Transfer papers are required at the
other school.
Pan Am Torch Relay
On Saturday, June 13, (please note the date, as we
had the wrong date last month), the Pan Am Torch will
be passing through Caledon. That day it will be at the
Caledon Wellness Centre late in the morning. Just
around noon, it will continue its trek through Bolton,
along Kingsview Drive and then down along King
Street. All families are invited to join us in celebrating
the arrival of the torch. We expect that it will attract
much media attention. We invite you to use the
school grounds for parking. The school washrooms
will be available for use. This is intended to be a
family event. One of our parents, Mrs. Millar-Maggi,
will be carrying the torch in Alton. Congratulations!
We also extend well-wishes to all the other torch
bearers – what a wonderful honour!

community as we celebrate our
Year End Mass on Tuesday June
