Gracious and merciful God of all creation,
You made us to live together in communities.
We are nothing without relationships.
You have given us the virtue of empathy to ensure
that we are able to identify with and feel other
people’s concerns.
We come to you now asking for the grace and
strength to follow your plan and to form a safe,
caring, inclusive community here at St. Julia.
May your gift of empathy lead us to know and
feel your presence among us.
We ask this in name of Jesus, your Son, who lived
to show us your way.
Amen
An empathetic person…
Listens attentively
Watches people’s body language
Notices and responds when someone is upset
Can name her/his feelings
Can see a situation from another person’s
point of view
Knows that different people may feel differently about the same
thing

Bussing Update - Empty/Courtesy Seat
Students granted a courtesy seat are receiving
bus passes. Please note our neighborhood is considered to be in a growth area and changes to enrollment could occur throughout the year. Newly enrolled students who are eligible for bussing would
be given priority and as a result the Empty/
Courtesy Seat students may lose their seat on the
bus. Transportation is updating the system regularly please check www.stopr.ca for eligibility or
courtesy seat information.

Math Literacy
This year St. Julia will have a Special Assignment teacher visiting
each school in the system to assist with the teaching of Math
Literacy. The SAT will be working in partnership with the classroom teacher to implement the School Math plan. Ms. Inglis will
be working with groups of students as well as individual student
alongside the classroom teacher to target the learning needs of
students. This teacher may be working in your child’s classroom
from time to time throughout the year. We would like to welcome
Ms. G. Inglis as our SAT this year.
Children who are in the Primary and Junior divisions will have the opportunity to benefit from
additional classroom help to ensure greater
learning success. Therefore, there may be
times when your child works with a SAT
teacher this year. We are excited to provide a collaborative
teaching opportunity for all of the students. Our goal is rooted in
the faithful practice that each individual is a child of God and
belongs to our Catholic community of learners.

Learn about the secrets of discipline.
Are you tired of bargaining with children just to get a little
co-operation? Are you frustrated by their lack of respect?
Then join us for a special evening with international speaker
Ronald Morrish, author of Secrets of Discipline, With All
Due Respect and Flip Tips. His refreshing presentation will
provide you with many practical strategies for teaching children to be responsible and co-operative. You will learn how
to discipline without all the deal-making, arguments, and confrontations.
―Practical, effective, and immediately applicable.‖
The Midwest Review
Don’t miss it! It’s FREE for all St. Julia parents and guardians. Using the Parents Reaching Out grant money from the
government, the St. Julia School Council has invited this parenting expert to come and share his knowledge about the
hardest job out there... parenting. Please let the front office know if you plan to attend so that we can set out chairs
and have some refreshments available.
Progress Report
The progress report (grades 1-8) provides initial information,
early in the school year, about a student’s progress. It is designed to show a student’s development of the learning skills and
work habits, as well as a student’s general progress in working
towards the achievement of curriculum expectations. For these
reason, the November Progress Report does not include marks or
comments in all subject areas.
While some parents may be invited to attend an interview on the
evening of November 4 to discuss their child’s progress, there is
not an expectation that all parents will attend an interview after
receipt of the Progress report. If you would like to meet with
your child’s teacher, you may, of course, request an interview. All
parents will be invited to attend an interview with their child’s
teacher after the issue of the first Provincial Report Card on
either the evening of February 3 or during the PA Day on February 4, 2011. Information regarding interview times will be sent
home to all parents next week.
Phone System—Voicemail
We have now set up a Voicemail system for all teachers.
Please dial the school number 905-795-2706 and you will be
able to leave a voice message for your child’s teacher. Teachers will be checking their messages frequently and will return
calls as soon as possible.
You know have 3 options when calling the school:

On October 5th the staff and students of
St. Julia were out in full force walking the
neighborhood and the track at St. Marcellinus to show our support The school raised
$1374.00 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation for the Canadian Cancer Society. A
special thanks to the parents who came out
to support and cheer the students on and
for their continued support. Congratulations to the Terry Fox Team for
putting on a day for all staff and students to enjoy: Mr. Pritchard, Mrs.
DeLuca, Mrs. Beaty, Mrs. Shea, Mrs. D’Arrisso and Mme Rago.
Missed Work due to Absences
When children are absent from school they miss important lessons and
work that extends from these teachings. If a child is absent due to illness
we kindly request that children get the needed rest they require so they
can come back to school healthy. The teachers will not be sending daily
work home for your son/daughter to “catch up”. They will spend time assisting students on their return to school. If your son/daughter is absent
due to extended illness, please contact Mrs. Nichols to discuss some available options.
Illness
Children who come to school are expected to participate fully in
the class program. This includes taking recess breaks with the
class. If your child needs to remain indoors for recesses a medical
note should be provided.
World Teacher Day
On October 5th we celebrated World Teachers Day ,
a day specifically designated to recognize the contribution of teachers throughout our education system.
At St. Julia School we are very fortunate to have so
many dedicated individuals who work to provide for
the education of your children. Thank you to our School Council for
providing a delicious cake for the teachers to enjoy.
Emergency Evacuation
In the event that it is necessary to evacuate for emergency reasons we will evacuate to St. Marcellinus Secondary at the corner
of Mavis and Courtney Park Drive. Your child will remain at St.
Marcellinus until we make contact with you or an en emergency
contact. Please inform the office of any change to emergency contacts, phone numbers or address changes.
Criminal Reference Check – CRC required
This is a reminder that everyone working with children must complete a
criminal record check. For individuals who are volunteering in our School
Board there is no charge for this service. Forms are available at the office. The form must be dropped off in person. The completed CRC will be
mailed to you when completed. Please request a receipt when dropping off
an application for a CRC and we will keep that on file until the CRC is completed. Thank you to the many volunteers who have already completed this
procedure. We appreciate the time that you are able to spend helping in
the school. Anyone else who is intending to help throughout the year with
driving teams, supervising trips or helping in the classroom are requested
to begin this process right away.
Visitors to the School
All visitors, including parents and former students must check in at the
main office before proceeding to any other area of the school. If you
are dropping off a lunch or book for your child, please leave it at the
table by the entrance where there are pens and labels available for identification. If you are picking up your child early, the best practice is to
send a note to the teacher with the time for your child to come to the
office, this way we avoid interrupting the classes. You must report to
the office and sign them out.
Walking Wednesdays
We would like to remind you that once again we are designating Wednesdays as a day for students and families to walk to school. This invitation is
designed to encourage healthy living and also to reduce our dependency on vehicles. All those who can reasonably participate are encourage to do so.
Bundle Sunday—St. Vincent de Paul
Please bring your donations of gently used clothing and household
linens to the church on October 23 & 24. A truck will be in the St.
Joseph Church parking lot. Please take this opportunity to clean
out your closets and share what you can with
those less fortunate. Thank you for your
support!
EQAO Results
Last Spring, an assessment of reading, writing and
mathematics was conducted in grade 3 & 6 classes across the province. This assessment is considered a “snapshot” of the children’s
performance based on their respective grade level expectations.
St. Julia continues to implement a wide variety of strategies in Literacy and Numeracy for the benefit of all students. We are continuing with our Math and Literacy blocks and our Literacy Room
has a wide variety of resources for our emergent, early and proficient readers reflecting the genres of text. Teachers work/plan
with their grade level partners for consistency and use a variety of
resources (manipulatives, anchor charts, math dictionaries, PRIME,
PM, CASI) to meet the needs of the learner. Teachers continue to
use data driven instruction and group students accordingly.

Kiss and Ride
We appreciate your cooperation when using the Kiss and
Ride to drop off your children. We have 2 staff members
on duty to assist with the flow of traffic and to make sure
students are safely dropped off. We kindly request that
you continue to drive up to the beginning of the Kiss and
Ride to drop off your child rather than at the playground
entrances. For safety reasons, please have your children
exit on the side closest to the walkway as cars are passing
on the left hand side.

Eye See….Eye Learn Program
We are pleased to be working with the Ontario Association of Optometrists in bringing the Eye See…Eye Learn program to our Dufferin-Peel Junior Kindergarten families. All Junior Kindergarten teachers should have received their Eye See…Eye Learn materials to
provide to parents. Local optometrists are providing OHIP-insured eye exams and if the child needs glasses, they will receive them
FREE.
Please take a moment to watch this quick video link on the program and why it is so important to have our children participate in this

Peel Youth Education Bureau
Constable Manning of the Peel Youth Education Bureau will conduct
workshops on November 26 to 28th with students from Kindergarten
to Grade 8. The workshops will focus on Community Helpers, Bullying
and Internet Safety.
Yard Duty
Please remember teacher supervision, in both the main
yard and kindergarten courtyard does not commence
until 8:30 a.m. Afternoon Kindergarten students are
not supervised until 12:30 p.m. in the kindergarten
courtyard. Parents are asked not to drop off their
children prior to these times as students will be unsupervised.
Pediculosis
Although it may seem early in the school year, we would
like to bring to your attention a problem which occurs
from time to time in each school. The problem is infestation by head lice, also know as pediculosis. Head lice
have become common throughout North America in recent years. These parasites have been among humans
for centuries. The are in no way connected with poor
hygiene or dirt. Anyone can become infested. In order
to control these pests we will follow the following procedure and request your full cooperation and understanding., If cases are found in the classroom, we shall
inform the parents. We would ask that you check your
children’s hair and if you find them to be infested
please notify the school and we will advise as to treatment. If a child is infested he/she will be kept out of
school until they have been treated with the correct
shampoo and their hair is entirely clear of both lice and
nits/eggs. Information on head lice may also be obtained from your family doctor, pharmacist or through
Peel Health.
A Year of Virtues
At St, Julia, virtue formation contributes to a healthy positive learning environment by fostering a climate in which all members feel
safe, confident and hope-filled about themselves, their relationships and their futures. Each of the Virtues is clearly outlined in the
student agenda. A student centered assembly will introduce the Virtue of the Month.

Candy
As we did last year, we are asking students to contribute a handful of their Halloween candies for children less fortunate. Hard candy which is easily preserved can be brought in during the week following Halloween. It
will be taken to Dr. Simone of “Feed the Children”. The effort of our children to share their good fortune in having
so much is greatly appreciated.
Halloween
This is a very exciting time for children as they walk in their neighbourhood trick-or-treating. We will remind students of the
safety rules so they will have a fun yet safe evening. At school, students will participate in our annual Boogie-a-thon and are
allowed to wear costumes on Friday, October 29, but masks, “scary make-up” and any loose items such as toy swords are not
permitted.
The most important aspect of this time of year centers on the two great Feast Days. November 1, is All Saints Day, where we
honor the Saints of our Church and November 2, is All Souls Day, where we spend time reflecting and remembering those who
have passes away.
