We have to take care, and put back what we take So planting some trees is a good choice to make. To celebrate Earth Day, we’re digging up ground And planting twelve trees, each in their own mound. We’ll have to take care, as they are young and not strong And if we’re too rough, the trees won’t stay for long. The clouds will give rain, to help the roots down below And before we all know it, to the sky they will grow. So remember the earth, reduce, recycle and please Be kind to our gift and take care of the trees. Amen Written by Siobhan Kukolic, Co-Chair of School Council at St. Julia Mark Your Calendars... The morning started off with an Earth Day assembly in the gym followed by the planting of our Peace Garden. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their generous donations to our garden and special thank you to Mrs. Kukolic who organized the donation and delivery of many beautiful trees for our school yard and to Mr. Grittani for designing and planting our Peace Garden. The garden is situated in our front yard and can be enjoyed by parents and students as they walk to school. We will be adding a bench and plaque in memory of Ruth. We have now completed Phase 1 of the garden and look forward to planting Phase 2 next year. Once again, thank you to parents, students and staff for making this Peace Garden possible. P. Nichols WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN EVENING On Wednesday, May 15, 2013 the newest and youngest members of St. Julia Elementary School will be welcomed by our current staff and School Council members . They will be introduced to the school routines and fun activities in preparation for their entry in September. A special Thank you to The Learning Partnership for providing pre-school children and their families with resources and experiences to begin formal education with a foundation in early learning that is nurtured within the home. We look forward to seeing all the bright new faces in September. MOVING Just a reminder…if you are moving before the end of the year or over the summer please inform the school office as soon as possible so that the class lists may accurately reflect the number of students enrolled. Also, if new neighbors have moved in it would be appreciated if you could let them know that we are accepting registrations for next September and that they are welcome to drop by the office for a registration package. When moving to a new school transfer papers from your current school are needed. The office requires a few days to process these. Volunteer Appreciation Tea The staff and students of St. Julia would like to show their appreciation for all the support we have received throughout the year from all our volunteers. If you have volunteered in any capacity this year, we would like you to join us for a reception at the school on June 11, 2013 @ 2:00 pm in our school library. Please RSVP the main office to confirm. GET UP AND GO DAY St. Julia's first Get Up & Go Day was a huge success! Students from grades 4-8 were very excited about choosing and participating in a wide variety of activities related to healthy living. We would like to thank all the teachers who made the day possible, as well as Peel Health for providing St. Julia with a grant to sponsor this event. A huge thank you goes out to the following people and organizations for leading the amazing activities: Mrs. Menezes (dance) Mrs. Banducci (tai chi) Mrs. Moniuszko (yoga) Jennifer Wolfs (stepping) Mrs. Klugman (healthy eating a.m.) Mr. Migdal (karate) Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Quintana (healthy eating) Healthy Options (healthy eating p.m.) Squash Ontario and Hartunian Squash Academy Badminton Birds ACE Taekwondo Academy Competitive Edge Physiotherapy & Sport Conditioning Aussie X Region of Peel (hike) Camp Brebeuf Scooter’s Roller Palace Region of Peel OF (hike) CROWNING MARY Camp Brebeuf On Friday, May 17, St. Julia School will celebrate the Scooters ―Crowning of Mary‖ with two beautiful and child centered Scooter's Roller Palace gatherings. This culminating activity reflects all of the hard work the Rosary Apostolate volunteers have done with our students to teach them the hymns of Mary and the prayers of the Rosary. We thank the members of the Rosary Apostolate for their hard work and dedication to the students of St. Julia. We would certainly welcome members of the parent community to join us for the celebration. JK – grade 3 will be gathering from 9:00 – 10:00 in the gym. Grades 4 – 8 will gather from 10:30 – 11:30. Close to 70 students will be involved with the presentation of the living rosary. It promises to be a wonderful celebration of this rich traditional devotion to our Lady. LENTEN COLLECTION We have been counting pennies for Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur’s Pure Water Campaign for Children in Africa, Latin America and New Mexico. The donations have been overwhelming! We have collected over $200 in pennies! This donation will be helping and changing the lives of these people. Pure water means: a better quality of life, protection from cholera and dehydration and longer life expectancy. Thank you again for reaching out to our brothers and sisters in Christ. SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS MOVIE NIGHT Our recent Wreck it Ralph Movie Night was a success. We raised $475 to go towards enriching the educational activities at St. Julia. The Hotel Transylvania Movie Night ended just a few minutes into the movie due to a black out. Because of that unforeseen circumstance, we didn’t get to do the raffle for the DVD during the event. At the following School Council meeting, we drew tickets for the winner of the Hotel Transylvania DVD and it was won by Mr. Lawrence. Our Movie Nights are over for this school year. Just a reminder for next year that it is a family event and students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The movies are suitable for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. EARTH DAY PEACE GARDEN On April 22nd, Earth Day, the St. Julia community rallied together to create a beautiful Peace Garden in honour of our fellow Grade 4 student, Ruth Katelyn Cruz, who passed away from a brain tumor in December. We have many people to thank. The Real Canadian Superstore on Mavis Road at Dundas donated 15 cedars, 15 shrubs, 10 plants, 15 bags of soil, gardening tools for 10, a couple of shovels and 20 packets of seeds. Thank you to Siobhan Kukolic for co-ordinating this donation and to her husband Tony Kukolic for picking up all the items in his pick-up truck and dropping them off at St. Julia. And thanks to school custodian, Mr. Riele, for moving the plants around from the shed to the planting site and for helping with the co-ordinating and planting on Earth Day. The City of Mississauga donated three rose bushes, two grey dogwoods and one serviceberry tree. Thank you to Siobhan Kukolic for co-ordinating this donation. Parent Mr. Grittani is a landscaper by trade. He took time out from his company, Land Graphics Inc., 647-287-2018, matthewgrittani@sympatico.ca, to create a plan for the Peace Garden. He and two other men, Al Osorio, a family friend, and Ovi Duque, his brother-in-law, spent the entire day on April 22nd at St. Julia, planting the Peace Garden, and the school Eco-Garden, with the students. Mr. Grittani also picked up all the plants that were purchased with $657 in donations from St. Julia parents, purchased some soil for the garden out of his own funds, and got the big rocks for the garden donated from Stephanie and Alan Oliver, owners of Boulder Stone Supply in Oakville. To thank Mr. Grittani and his adult volunteers, School Council purchased one $100 gift card and two $50 gift cards for The Keg to give to the three men who worked so hard on Earth Day. Once Mr. Grittani shared the wish list of flowers and shrubs he could purchase wholesale, the St. Julia parents and friends together donated $657 to ensure our Peace Garden would be blooming beautifully in no time. Thanks to Siobhan Kukolic for communicating the need to parents and to Mrs. Charette who collected the funds and kept track of what people were donating towards. A big thanks to the following parents and families who donated money for flowers, shrubs and supplies for the Peace Garden: Mrs. Maione, Mrs. Cesario, Mr. Cinapri, Mrs. Selva, Mrs. Trapani, Mrs. Carere, Mrs. Fabrizi, Mrs. Yuen, Mrs. Castrucci, Mrs. Persicini, Mrs. Runstedler, Mrs. Drodzowski, Mrs. Caracciolo, Mrs. Dri, Mrs. Nazren, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Koulakis, Mrs. Hoxha, Mrs. Netto, Mr. Viegas, Mrs. Naumovski, Mrs. Marcuzzi and Mrs. Zizek. The following members of the Cruz family, along with Ruth Katelyn’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cruz, also donated towards the flowers, shrubs and supplies for the Peace Garden. Sonny Cruz, Mhel Guevarra, Helen Francisco, Joseline Pleto, Heather Francisco, Juliana Cruz, and Mr. & Mrs. Willie Cruz. We are grateful for their generosity. Costco donated $50 in gift cards towards the Peace Garden. This will be used to purchase mulch to protect the newly planted trees and shrubs. Thank you to Siobhan Kukolic for securing this donation and to Mr. Grittani for picking up the mulch and spreading it. The money that has been raised by students selling rosary beads, the Starbucks coffee fundraiser at Parent-Teacher Interview night, and other fundraisers for the garden, will go towards a bench that will be placed in the Peace Garden at a future date. The City of Mississauga asked that we enter our school’s planting activity on the site onemilliontrees.ca whose goal is to plant one million trees in the city over the next 20 years. We entered our Earth Day activity and after all was said and done, our school community planted 117 trees and shrubs on Earth Day. We are listed on the site at the moment as one of the top planters in the city. Thank you to all the parents who donated money and time to bring the Peace Garden, in memory of Ruth Katelyn Cruz, to life. WELCOME TO CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK OPEN HOUSE AT ST.
