Numeracy:

Students will be focusing on Number

Sense (Addition, Subtraction, Rounding,

Estimating and Representing), and

Patterning for the month of October. A great way to assist your child to further extend their understanding of these concepts would be to assist them in making connections to everyday life.

For example, adding simple things at the grocery store, or even looking for patterns in nature or at home.

Literacy

Students have begun to work on their researching skills while investigating about the origins of their name. They will continue to further develop their paragraph writing and construct their very own non-fiction pieces of text.

Students are also focusing on understanding the text features of Non-

Fiction text. They will continue to use their research skills to investigate the importance of these text features as we inquire into our next theme ‘How the

World Works’ (Forces and Plants).

To further students learning please give students the opportunity to research and investigate plants and natural forces with you at home.

Students will be writing EQAO later in the school year. (May/June) Students have been preparing since they were in Grade 1 and will continue to prepare throughout this year. Students and parents will be kept informated and will be provided opportunities in the new year to dwell more into the understadning of what is EQAO?

St. James is in its authorization year and will be continuing with the great success of the IB program and inquiry. We thank you for your continued partnership to achieve this great accomplishment!!

Interactive Gr. 3s

Splash Math: www.splashmath.com

All students have been registered and been given usernames and passwords for them to get started on their math review and practice extension at home. This website is a great way for your children to further their learning at home in a fun and interactive way. Also, I am able to track their learning and see what areas students may need to support in. Thank you for all your support in building a more enriching learning experience for your children.

Snuggle-Up : Students will beginning to bring levelled books to keep track of their reading at home. This program will help your child read a variety of texts and familiarize themselves with several reading strategies. Here are some suggestions that can help when working with your child.

1. Look at the cover. Read the title to him/her. Talk about what the book might be about.

2. Take a picture walk through the book. Ask your child what the story might be about by looking at the pictures.

3. Read the story to the child while pointing to each word.

4. Read the story together two or three times, encouraging your child to point to each word and letting your child read some of the words you intentionally skip.

5. Then let your child read the story on his/her own.

6. Close the book and have your child tell you about what he/she has read or to retell the story. He/she may be able to tell you about the characters and setting, or the beginning, middle and end of the story. Help them to use ideas from the story to make connections to their own lives.

7. Please complete the Reading Log each day and return it to school with the book(s) your child has selected to bring home.

Word Study: Students will be learning their “know words” through engaging in a welldesigned word study which is important in promoting growth in reading comprehension. Gains in vocabulary, spelling, and sensitivity to word choice all work toward more efficient language processing. When readers do not have to labour over decoding and recognizing new words, they are able to interact with text at a deeper level, freeing them to connect with the writer’s message in creative and thought-provoking ways.

Students will continue their journey through inquiry and the IB classroom.

Inquiry in the Classroom

This upcoming school year will be full of exciting new topics that we will explore and discover together. Parents you will continue to be our partners through this exploration. You will soon start to see all forms of inquiry tickets, problem solving tasks, topics of investigation and even invitations to join us with your own expertise to further enrich their learning.

Our OCTOBER THEME will be HOW

THE WORLD WORKS : An inquiry into the natural world and its laws: the interaction between the natural world

(physical and biological) and humans and societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles on society and the environment.
