Iona Catholic Secondary School - SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT Course Outline: GEOGRAPHY OF CANADA, Grade 9 Applied Course Code: CGC 1P Introduction: This course focuses on geographic issues that affect Canadians today. Students will draw on personal and everyday experiences as they learn about Canada’s distinct and changing character and the natural and human systems and global influences that shape the country. Students will use a variety of geotechnologies and inquiry and communication methods to examine practical geographic questions and communicate their findings. Textbook: Making Connections: Canada’s Geography ($70 replacement cost) Units: Mapping Skills Physical Connections(Landforms, Climate and Ecozones) Natural Resources: The Challenge of Sustainability Canadian Industry: Location, Impact, Opportunity The topics and the sequence in which they are covered may change as the semester progresses. Evaluation: The student's final grade will be based on the following: Term Work 70%* Final Culminating Performance Task 15% Final Exam 15% 100% *Term work will consist of: unit tests, quizzes, assignments and in-class assignments and will be evaluated in the following manner: Knowledge and Understanding 25% Thinking 20% Communication 25% Application 30% Please Note: 1. Missed Test Policy a) Students who have previous knowledge that they will be absent for a test must notify the instructor prior to the test so that an alternate time to write the test can be arranged. b) Any student who is absent on the day in which a test is being written is expected to write the test on the day of return from the absence or on the day and time specified by the course instructor. If the absence is for an extended period of time, on the day of return, the student must make alternate arrangements with the course instructor to schedule a day to write the test.
