Iona Catholic Secondary School - SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT Course Outline: CANADIAN HISTORY, Grade 10 Course Code: CHC 2L Introduction: This course focuses on the connections between the student and key people, events, and themes in Canadian history from World War I to the present. Students will prepare for the future courses through the development and extension of historical literacy and inquiry skills. Students explore a variety of topics highlighting individuals and events that have contributed to the story of Canada. The major themes of Canadian identity, internal and external relationships, and change since 1914, are explored through guided investigation. Students have opportunity to extend analytical skills with focus on identifying and interpreting events and perspectives and making connections. Students practice reading, writing, visual, and oral literacy skills and mathematical literacy skills to identity and communicate ideas in a variety of forms. Units: Canada Comes of Age 1914-1928 Becoming Canadian 1929-1958 A country to Call Our Own 1959-1982 Being Canadian The topics and the sequence in which they are covered may change as the semester progresses. Evaluation: The student's final grade will be based on the following: Term Work 70%* Culminating Performance Task 30% 100% * Presentation of the Culminating Performance Task will be on the FINAL EXAM DAY. *Term work will consist of: unit tests, quizzes, assignments and in-class assignments and will be evaluated in the following manner: Knowledge/Understanding 25% Thinking 25% Communication 25% Application 25% Please Note: 1. Missed Test Policy a) Students who have previous knowledge that they will be absent for a test must notify the instructor prior to the test so that an alternate time to write the test can be arranged. b) Any student who is absent on the day in which a test is being written is expected to write the test on the day of return from the absence or on the day and time specified by the course instructor. If the absence is for an extended period of time, on the day of return, the student must make alternate arrangements with the course instructor to schedule a day to write the test.
