Dear Parents\Guardians,
St. Catherine of Siena, in partnership with the Region of Peel Public Health, is taking part in a ‘walk to
school’ program called STEPS. The purpose of STEPS is to get students more active by walking to and
from school at least once a week throughout the school year. Our school has chosen to do Walk to
School Wednesdays beginning November 20, 2013.
How can you participate?
Join your child on the walk to or from school.
Alternate walking groups of children with other parents to juggle busy schedules.
Teach your child and their friends pedestrian safety tips when walking to school.
Benefits for Children
The more active kids and teens are earlier on in their lives the better chance they have of developing lifelong activity behaviours into adulthood. Physical fitness levels are linked to positive health outcomes,
such as:
Healthy body weight
Improved mood
Self-esteem
Academic performance
Overall quality of life
Walking also allows students to learn more about their neighbourhoods, socialize with friends, build
confidence, gain independence, and most importantly, it is fun!
Benefits for Parents and Caregivers
Foster healthy habits for you and your children.
Get to know other families during the walk to school.
Save money on gas and practice environmentally-friendly behaviour.
Thank you for all your support!
