Dearest Mother of Our Lord
Principal
G. Pedroso
Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone
who fled to your protection,
implored your help,
or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence, we turn to you,
O Virgin of virgins, our Mother.
To you we come, before you we stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
do not despise our petitions,
but in your mercy hear us and answer us.
Amen

Spring is here and it’s one of the favourite times of the year. There’s an energy of new growth
and rebirth in the air as we shed our ‘winter layers’ and live in the Easter promise. In the month
of April, we celebrated the virtue of Love, and in May, we focus on the virtue of Acceptance.
April was another busy, and exciting, month at St. Catherine of Siena. We celebrated the
Lenten season as a community of faith, beginning with our school Reconciliation for grades
three to eight. This was followed by two outstanding Virtue assemblies on Love. As a
community of giving, we were able to donate over $600 to ShareLife through our Pretzel and
Shrove Tuesday Breakfast fundraisers, and another $1450 was raised for Canadian Cancer
Research through the Daffodil campaign. At the school we had an EQAO Parent Information
Meeting, Eco-Fair, Movie Day, and two Community Building Events. As a school, we
participated in the Youth Diversity Conference, Junior Heads Up Competition, and the Family
Chess and Intermediate Girls Basketball tournaments. On Holy Thursday, we had a moving
Stations of the Cross presentation from our Youth Faith Ambassadors. At the end of the month,
we celebrated the Feast of St. Catherine of Siena.
The month of May promises to be another busy and active month. We will be celebrating
Catholic Education Week which kicks off in all parishes on Sunday, May 4th. Activities this
month include: French Café, Intermediate Heads Up competition, Crowning of Mary
celebration, Joe Sax, Sounds of Siena, Hats Off 2 Kids Walk, EQAO, as well as celebrating the
Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation for our grades two and eight students.
We thank you in advance for your kindness, generosity and support of all the many other
upcoming activities in our school.
God Bless,
G. Pedroso and R. Scicluna

Virtue of the Month: ACCEPTANCE
God wants us to make friends with everyone
no matter how different they may look or act.
The virtue of ACCEPTANCE means we accept
ourselves and others just the way we are. God
created all of us in His image, and God does not
make mistakes. Being part of Gods family means that
we love and welcome everyone just the way Jesus
did. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where
it is easier to follow the crowd than to stand up for
what we know is right. However, Jesus wants us to
accept everyone even when it is hard.
Our Daily Prayer for May:
Let us pray for the virtue of acceptance - the strength
to trust that God is at work in everyone's life despite
what we think.
From the perspective of the Catholic Graduate
Expectations, an accepting person...

Day of our patroness St. Catherine
of Siena! A special Mass will be
celebrated on May 4 at 1 p.m.
followed by an outdoor procession
and “street” party. There will be lots of food, music,
dancing and a talent show.
First Holy Communion
Our grade 2 students, with the guidance of their
teachers, have been busily preparing for their First
Eucharist celebration. Their
Eucharist celebration will be
celebrated on Saturday, May 10 at 3
p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena
Church. More information will be
coming from your child's teacher.
Grade 8 Confirmation
Our grade 8 students have been
preparing all year, with the help of their
teachers and staff at the church for the
reception of the Sacrament of
Confirmation. This is a special moment
in the student’s spiritual journey as
they are confirmed with the gift of the
Holy Spirit. The celebration will be Wednesday, May 28
at 7 p.m. at the St. Catherine of Siena Church. The
students are now seen as young adults in the Church. It
is our hope that they continue their spiritual journey and
maintain and nurture the relationship they have
developed with God.
Catholic Education Week
Serving in the Love of
Christ” is scheduled for
the week of May 4 –
May 9, 2014. The
scriptural passage that
guides our theme is: ‘I am among you as one who
serves.’ (Luke 22:27e)
Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to
highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of
Catholic education between our Catholic schools and
local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education
Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of
Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our
Church, and in our society. We invite all members of our
community, to participate in the celebrations and
activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic
Education Week 2014 in our schools.

This year, St. Catherine of
Siena was able to raise
over $600 for ShareLife.
As part of a school wide
Lenten project, we held a Shrove Tuesday breakfast and
sold pretzels. Money raised will be used to help the less
fortunate.
Daffodil Day
April is the month to
fight back against
Cancer! We at St.
Catherine of Siena
banded together to offer our support and donations
to the Canadian Cancer Society to the sound of
$1450!! On April 30, students participated in Daffodil
Day by wearing a “Join the Fight” sticker or a Daffodil
pin. Students wore their sticker or pin, along with the
colour yellow, to help show their support for all
Canadians living with cancer. “To some, the daffodil is
just a flower. To us, it is a symbol of strength and
courage. It says we will not give up.”

across the city, we are holding
a Walk-a-Thon in support of
Leukemia Research at Sick
Kids Hospital. All students will be participating in a Hats
Off 2 Kidz walk the morning of Thursday, May 8, 2014.

support the leukemia research, and to wear a baseball
hat that day to honour and support all children who lose
their hair because of cancer treatment. All parents and
community members are encouraged to participate too.

The Joe Sax Festival
This year ten students from
St. Catherine of Siena will
participate in The Joe Sax
Festival on Tuesday, May 6
at Iona Secondary School.
The Joe Sax Festival is an
event being organized by a
committee of dedicated
Dufferin-Peel educators. The
theme of the event is
Together We Sparkle: One
World Rooted in Acceptance and Love. The aim of the
Festival is to offer interactive sports activities to a
diverse team of students as a means of fostering healthy
minds, healthy bodies, positive social interactions and
inclusive experiences in sport. This year the organizers
have partnered with the PAN AM GAMES’ IGNITE
initiative, which is an exciting new community
partnership program that enables individuals,
organizations and communities to create their own
special PAN AM and PARAPAN AM themed events.
Attendance and Punctuality
All students are expected to attend school regularly and
punctually. In the event that your child will be late or
absent, please call the school and follow the prompts to
leave a message. This can be done 24 hours a day.
For students who are absent and for whom a call is not
received, we will attempt to contact you.
If the bell has rung, all students (Gr. 1‐8) who may be late, are to go to the back of the school and join a line. If there are no students, and the doors are closed you are to come to the front of the school and obtain a Late Slip. Please leave the following information:




Date of the absence
Student’s full name
Grade level and teacher
Reason for absence
Before School Hours Supervision
For your child’s safety, we request that children not be
on school property until supervision begins at 8:45 a.m.
Medical Concerns
If your son / daughter has any medical concerns, please
ensure that you inform the school. Information may be
shared directly with the classroom teacher / office. If
medication is required, forms will be sent for completion
by parents and the family doctor. All information is held
in confidence.
Kindergarten Drop-Off (Sidewalk clear)
In support of our Safe Arrival
procedures here at Siena, we are
asking the sidewalk in front of the
Kindergarten yard be kept clear
and accessible to students making
their way to the school yard. With
morning traffic, it is imperative that students not be on
the road, and they have a clear path on the sidewalk. To
help with this, we ask that once parents/guardians
drop off their children that they please move away
from the sidewalk. This is a safety concern for all
pedestrians, especially the students in the morning. We
ask for your continued cooperation in this very important
safety procedure
Lost and Found Clothing
During Education Week (May 5-9) we will be spreading
out clothes from the Lost and Found on tables in the
hallway. If your child has lost
any clothing throughout the
year, we ask that you please
look through these clothes and
take what was lost. Clothes left
behind will be donated.

Kiss ‘n’ Ride @ St. Catherine of Siena
Student Dress Code
The driveway at the front of
the school is set up as our
Kiss ’n’ Ride, allowing
parents the opportunity to
drop off and pick up their children in a safe and effective
manner. To this end, the success of this requires the
mutual understanding and support of all our parents to
assure as smooth a transition as possible to the start
and end of each day.
Board Policy states that all
students are expected to dress
in clean, neat and practical
attire. Appropriate attire is the
criterion for acceptable dress
that most often reflects our
attitude toward any given situation. The expectation here
is that we avoid such recreational wear such as tank
tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, tube tops, spaghetti
straps, short shorts, cut offs, hats/headgear, wallet
chains and shirts with inappropriate logos/symbols. The
items are contrary to both the philosophy of our Catholic
schools and the standards that we set as parents and
educators.
Guidelines:

Follow the arrows on the driveway to the dropoff/pick-up area (in front on the Kindergarten yard).
Please do not use the Bus Loading zone (right next
to the sidewalk) as this area is meant for buses or
emergency vehicles.

Pull up as far as you can, it allows more cars to use
the Kiss’n’Ride.

Do Not Park or Get out of Your Vehicle in this
area, even if only for a few seconds. Parents who
wish to get out of the car are asked to park in the
designated visitor parking in the front and at the side
of the school.

Students are to exit the vehicle on the passenger
side (right side)

Once your child has left the car, please exit right
away at the south end of the school, driveway
closest to the Fire Department.

Please drive slowly and carefully in these lanes at all
times.

Please do not walk your children through the
Kiss’N’Ride lanes, this can be unsafe.
Book Fair

On April 24, some of our grade eight
students participated in the Mississauga
Diversity Conference. The theme for the
conference was ‘Breaking Down
Barriers’. Anthony McLean (actor and
motivational speaker) and “Testament”
(dancer, artist and performer) spoke to the students
about how everyone must overcome some kind of
barrier in their life. God created no two people alike.
Every person should be accepted for who they are,
regardless of race, culture, gender, or faith. No one
should feel the need to change themselves in order to ‘fit
in’. As children of God, who are trying to live in His
image, we must ‘stand up for ourselves and for others’ in
order to make this world a better place to live.

Chess Team
Congratulations to our chess team
who did very well at the Mississauga
South Family tournament on April 3.
The tournament had a record
numbers of teams, and the kids all
had fun with the experience. Many
people from other schools
commented on how well behaved our school was; they
really carried themselves well. We did not win any
medals this time, but we had many good results. Thank
you to Mr. Mintz for your time and efforts coaching the
team.
Are You Moving
If you are
planning a move,
or have already
moved, please let
us know. If you
are moving to a
new school we
will give you a
Transfer Form to take with you to the new school. We
will be preparing classes for September 2014 and this
information will be helpful in determining class sizes. In
the past we have had to reorganize our classes in
September due to unexpected transfers.
If you currently live outside the school boundary and are
attending St. Catherine of Siena on a flex boundary
request, you will need to request flex boundary for next
year. The “Flexible Boundary” procedure is
reviewed annually. Please note that flex boundaries
will be looked at on a case by case basis and are not
guaranteed from year to year. If you are requesting flex
boundary, please note that transportation is your
responsibility. The Board will not provide either
transportation or additional supervision for students
admitted under this procedure. Note, the students
admitted under this procedure do not automatically
become eligible for the Secondary School serving the
school. A separate request must be made to the
Secondary School Principal.
School Council
Next Meetings: Wed, May
21 and June 4 at 7 p.m.
Communication between home and school is greatly
enhanced by parental involvement with the Catholic
School Council. All parents/guardians are
encouraged to come out to meetings and participate.
Volunteers - Criminal Reference Checks
and Annual Offence Declaration
If you're interested in helping at the
school, and do not have a Criminal
Reference Check, we are more than
happy to give you the necessary
forms to be signed and completed.
Criminal Reference Checks are
free of charge for volunteers. All volunteers, including
those going on one day school trips, must have a
Criminal Reference Check completed by the Peel Police.
On our school website, in the Parents section, you’ll find
a copy the school’s 2014 Annual Offence Declaration
for Volunteers. This declaration saves parents from
completing another Criminal Reference Check, if
done within the year. If you have a Criminal Reference
Check here at the school, we’re asking you to please
complete, sign and submit this declaration to the office.
We're very thankful and appreciative of everyone’s
commitment and support to the students of St. Catherine
of Siena!

LIVING, LOVING, LEARNING
Social Communication
for students with complex needs
As parents, we want our children to parƟcipate fully in the
social lives of our families, classrooms, and communiƟes.
CommunicaƟon skills are the vehicle through which we
share experiences and interests with others. How can we
support early social communicaƟon development for our
children who have complex needs and communicaƟon
challenges?
As a support to families, this workshop will present ways to
engage our children in literacy and communicaƟon
acƟviƟes that are socially interacƟve and personally
meaningful. We will explore channels to enhance our
children’s parƟcipaƟon in communicaƟve interacƟons
across the day. We will invesƟgate iPad/tablet applicaƟons
along with simple materials we can make at home to
foster these experiences. Families will leave this workshop
with new ideas and resources to support their children in
sharing who they are as individuals and in engaging with
others around shared interests and acƟviƟes.

St. Catherine of Siena Parish May 2014
FIRST FRIDAY
May 2nd
The Blessed Sacrament will be
exposed all day in Church. Come
and spend some time with Jesus.
We have two new saints!
St. John Paul II and St. John XXIII
O Saint John Paul, grant us your blessing from Heaven’s
window! Bless the Church which you have loved, served and
guided, encouraging her to walk the roads of the world, so to
carry Jesus to everyone, and everyone to Jesus. Bless the
youth, who have been your great passion. Guide them so that
they may dream again, raise their eyes on high and find the
light that illumines the meaning of all life here below. Bless
all families, Saint John Paul, with your prayer, protect the
family and each life which blooms in the family. Pray for the
whole world, still marked by tensions, war and injustice. You
have fought against war by summoning dialogue and by
sowing love; pray for us, so that we may be tireless sowers of
peace. O Saint John Paul, from Heaven’s window, where we
see you alongside Mary, make the blessing of God come down
upon us. Amen.
