Dear Lord, during the month of November,
may all the saints look after us.
May we continually strive for peace and righteousness.
May we always have the wisdom to end strife
in lands far and near or within our families and communities.
Let us pray for the peacemakers, especially those who suffered and died
for the sake of justice and peace.
Grant us peace in our time, O Lord.

Administrator’s Message…
Another month has passed! Our First Term Progress Reports will be going home on Tuesday,
November 11, with parent/teacher interviews following on the evening of Thursday, November
13. Student success is a priority, and your partnership with us is integral in your child’s growth.
October was another great month at St. Catherine of Siena. We celebrated World Teacher’s
Day, two Virtue Assemblies based on Empathy, a Gr. 8 Trip to the Living Arts Centre,
Thanksgiving Food Drive, Eco-Team meetings, music presentation to our FDK-3 students, a
Skills Canada presentation to our intermediate students, the Family Cross-Country meet, an
exciting Junior Volleyball season, the introduction of Popcorn Fridays, and of course
Thanksgiving and Halloween celebrations.
As we begin November, and we approach November 11 we pause to thank and reflect on the
many women and men who died for the freedoms that we enjoy. We attempt to keep their
memories alive by wearing a poppy, and through liturgies that commemorate the bravery of
these veterans. On Tuesday, November 11, we will commemorate the sacrifice of thousands of
Canadians who died in war for us with a Remembrance Day Liturgy and Assembly in the gym;
please join us in honouring these heroes.
The month of November promises to be another busy and active month. Activities this month
include: a Gr. 5 trip to the Living Arts Centre, FDK and Gr. 1 trip to a local farm, two Virtue
Assemblies on Conscience, Family Movie Night, an exciting Intermediate Volleyball season,
Gr. 4-8 Musical Theatre presentation, Remembrance Day ceremonies, Gr. 3 trip to Crawford
Lake and to Swimming Lessons, Intermediates going to the Movies, and a Dance presentation
for all of our students.
Wishing you a very blessed November!
Yours in Catholic Education,
G. Pedroso and R. Scicluna

November Virtue – Conscience
Conscience is the inner voice which warns us that
someone may be looking. H. L. Mencken
Conscience is the voice of God within us. As you
develop your conscience, you will learn to make
decisions that will make sure you will always have
love in your life, our conscience reminds us how to act
towards other people and how to be a good friend.
Sometimes it is hard for us to do the right thing, but
we must always remember that the right thing is not
always the easy thing to do.
A person of conscience...
†
†
†
†
chooses to do the right thing, even when it is hard
takes time to think and pray before making
decisions
knows that their actions and decisions affect all
those around them
thinks of others before themselves
From the perspective of the Catholic Expectations, a
person of conscience…
†
†
Makes decisions according to gospel values
Accepts accountability for one’s own actions
Our Daily Prayer for November:
Let us pray for the grace and strength to be people of
conscience-people who know the good and decent
way to act and then choose to act that way. AMEN
Therefore I do my best always to have a clear
conscience toward God and all people. (Acts 24: 16)
Please note: All Virtue information is included in the
front pages of your child’s agenda.

we had some
construction happening
in our play yard. The
great news is that we
created an Outdoor
Learning Space.
Everyone benefits from learning outdoors, especially
young people. Benefits of getting outdoors include:
o Improved mood and happier students
o Enhanced appreciation for the outdoors
o Increased retention rate for subject material
o Lowered school violence and bullying, and improved
social skills
o
Community engagement for outdoor spaces that are
used beyond the school community

Kiss ‘n’ Ride @ St. Catherine of Siena
Attendance and Punctuality
The driveway at the front
of the school is set up as
our Kiss ’n’ Ride, allowing
parents the opportunity to
drop off and pick up their children in a safe and effective
manner. To this end, the success of this requires the
mutual understanding and support of all our parents to
assure as smooth a transition as possible to the start
and end of each day.
All students are expected to attend school regularly and
punctually. In the event that your child will be late or
absent, please call the school and follow the prompts to
leave a message. This can be done 24 hours a day.
For students who are absent and for whom a call is not
received, we will attempt to contact you.
Guidelines:

Follow the arrows on the driveway to the dropoff/pick-up area (in front on the Kindergarten yard).
Please do not use the Bus Loading zone (right next
to the sidewalk) as this area is meant for buses or
emergency vehicles.

Pull up as far as you can, it allows more cars to use
the Kiss’n’Ride.

Do Not Park or Get out of Your Vehicle in this
area, even if only for a few seconds. Parents who
wish to get out of the car are asked to park in the
designated visitor parking in the front and at the side
of the school.
PLEASE CALL: 905-277-2448 Press # 1
Please leave the following information:




Date of the absence
Student’s full name
Grade level and teacher
Reason for absence
If the bell has rung, all students (Gr. 1-8) who may be
late, are to go to the back of the school and join a
line. If there are no students, and the doors are
closed you are to come to the front of the school
and obtain a Late Slip.
All students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. or 1:03 p.m.
must obtain a Late Slip.
Before School Hours Supervision

Students are to exit the vehicle on the passenger
side (right side)
For your child’s safety, we request that children not be
on school property until supervision begins at 8:45 a.m.

Once your child has left the car, please exit right
away at the south end of the school, driveway closet
to the Fire Department.
Medical Concerns

Please drive slowly and carefully in these lanes at all
times.

Please do not walk your children through the Kiss’N
Ride lanes, this can be unsafe.
If your son / daughter has any medical concerns, please
ensure that you inform the school. Information may be
shared directly with the classroom teacher / office. If
medication is required, forms will be sent for completion
by parents and the family doctor. All information is held
in confidence.
No Birthday Food Treats Please
Please do not send birthday or
seasonal snacks/cakes/treats into
the school. There are many
alternatives such as stickers and
pencils.
The safety of all the children is our shared
concern and priority.
St. Catherine of Siena School is an allergen aware
school. There are pupils in attendance at our school who
suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to
certain foods, such as peanut and nut products. For that
reason we would appreciate parents NOT sending in any
food for other children to eat. We want St. Catherine of
Siena to be a safe environment for all students. Thank
you for your assistance with this initiative.

Winter Weather
During the winter season, the school
receives calls from concerned
parents as to how we determine
when children will or will not be
allowed outside for recess. Dufferin‐
Peel CDSB Policy uses a Wind Chill
factor of ‐25 C as the determining
temperature. Students will not be sent
outside for recess if it is colder than this.
Students should also come dressed appropriately for
weather (hats, mitts, etc.) For health and safety reasons
we must insist on indoor shoes. Students cannot walk
through the school with wet boots or shoes. For their
safety and comfort they need to have indoor shoes.
Please note that in the event of an emergency
evacuation, students will not have the opportunity to put
boots on. Where possible, please put identification on
your child’s belongings. Throughout the winter the lost
and found box fills up with unidentified clothing.
In the colder weather we receive numerous requests to
allow children to remain indoors when students have a
cold, flu, etc. Please note that we cannot comply, as we
neither have the facilities nor the staff to supervise these
students. If your child is not feeling well we encourage
you to keep them home to avoid the spread of illness.
The expectation at St. Catherine of Siena is that all
children will go outdoors for recess and the lunch break.
Flu Clinics
Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites,
are the schedules of local Flu Clinics.
For more information, visit the health unit websites:
Peel Health website: http://www.peelregion.ca/health

www.wdgpublichealth.ca
Direct links to the above information can be found in the
Parent Section of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board website at www.dpcdsb.org
Electronic Devices/Valuables
Students are asked not to bring to
school any valuables, items of
importance, toys, or other items
valuable to them. Examples of
these items may include (but not
limited to) Game Boys, expensive
sports equipment, cell phones,
MP3 players, trading cards,
cameras, etc. These items present a temptation which
causes theft to occur and can also be a great distraction
to the learning process. The school will not assume
responsibility for the care and loss of these items. Cell
phones, MP3 players, Ipods, digital cameras and all
PEDs are not to be used on school property. It is against
School and Board policy to have these devices on
school property or at any school sanctioned event.
Resources: Cold and Flu Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in
ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school
communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene
and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on
an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu
increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact
surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and
flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources
are utilized from our regional health units.
Catholic School Council
A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be
contracted in public places throughout the year. For
example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are
transferred from person to person through hand
contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from
December through February, but can start as early as
October.
Communication between home and school is greatly
enhanced by parental involvement with the Catholic
School Council. All parents/guardians are encouraged
to come out to meetings and participate.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing
procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as
outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington
Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you
through their websites. As always, children who are
unwell, should be kept at home.
Next Meeting: Wednesday, Nov. 5 @ 7 p.m.
The aim of the Catholic School Council is to promote the
vision, values, sacramental life and Catholic practices of
the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the
Catholic community it serves and to advise the principal
and the Board.

Terry Fox Run
Athletics
Written by: Julia Nikolajuk
Gr.4 -- Mrs. Connolly's class On Friday September 26, 2014,
St. Catherine of Siena School participated in our
annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. We ran to raise money for
cancer research. First, the whole school gathered on
the field to do warm-up exercises led by Mr.
Evans. Then, Mrs. Pedroso led us in prayer and shared
some encouraging words. Next, the kindergarten
students ran around their yard while the grade ones,
twos and threes ran around the field. The grade four to
six students ran around the school, and the sevens and
eights ran around the neighbourhood. Our entire school
ran, jogged, or walked for forty minutes. Finally, we
went inside and enjoyed some delicious freezies! We
should all feel so proud because we raised a lot of
money for cancer research! Way to go Siena! In fact, altogether we raised just under $1000 for the
Terry Fox Foundation to help find a cure for this
terrible disease! Thank you all so much for your
support! Siena Pumpkin Decorating Contest
Thank you to all of the classes that entered the 2nd
Annual Siena Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Thank you to

The Green Scene!
Hey Siena! The Green Team is back!
We are a group of students from
Grades 1-8 who are dedicated to
making our school, and our world a
GREENER place! We do this by
teaching our fellow students how we can
all
make some small changes to protect
our environment. Some initiatives that we are continuing
this year include: Goose bins in every class, Lights out
Lunches, Litterless-Rock Star Lunches and Monitors Off!
New initiatives for this year will include improving our
recycling practices, and promoting the regular use of reuseable water bottles. Finally, we are excited to
announce that our new Outdoor Classroom is almost
ready to use! We look forward to working together to
have a GREEN-filled year! GO GREEN!!!
Volunteers - Criminal Reference Check
Anyone working in our school as a new
employee or volunteer must have a
Criminal Reference Check completed by
the Peel Police.
We would love volunteers to help in
the school, and especially on field trips. If you’re
interested, we recommend you get a criminal reference
check right away, as they usually take three weeks. CRC
are free of charge for volunteers. Forms are
available from the office.
Intermediate Movie Excursion
The intermediate students along with their teachers will
be watching the 3rd installment
of Hunger Games, Mockingjay
Part 1, at the Courtney Park
Cinemas on Friday, November
21. The theatre has offered a
private viewing for the students
in the morning. The buses will
leave soon after 9 o'clock entry
and return to school at approximately 12:30 p.m. due to
the length of the movie. For this reason, students will
not be permitted to go out for lunch. Any lunches
dropped off at the school will be picked up by the student
once they have returned from the theatre. Students will
be given time to each their lunch in the classroom.
Along with the permission form, a concession preorder
form was also sent home. Please note that concession
preorders are optional. Students will not have an
opportunity to make any purchases at the theatre on the
day of the movie. It is the Cineplex Cinema's policy that
no outside food or drink is permitted on the
premises. Students are expected to dress for the movie
theatre and are expected to leave all belongings in the
classroom. As per board policy, no PED's are
permitted.

NOVEMBER: THE
MONTH OF THE
HOLY SOULS IN
PURGATORY
The Church dedicates
the month of
November to the
remembrance of all the
holy souls in
Purgatory. As
baptized Catholics we
should be praying for
the faithful departed,
especially since our
prayers can help these
souls get to Heaven,
where they can in turn
intercede for us.
Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual
light shine upon their face. May the souls of the faithful
departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

FIRST COMMUNICANTS AND CONFIRMANDI
Parents are the main Catholic Educators of their
children. In partnership with the parish priests, school
teachers and catechists, they have the most important
role in the sacramental preparation of their children. It
is the parent’s responsibility to accompany their child as
they journey in their faith. Attendance at catechism
classes and regular Sunday Mass is mandatory in order
to receive their sacrament at the parish.
FIRST FRIDAY of the Month

The Blessed Sacrament will be
exposed all day in the Church with
