Vickie Kerr When Vickie Kerr began making her own potato chips in her kitchen in 1986 she thought about two things: how she could make use of some of the potatoes she and her husband grew on their 165-acre potato farm, and how to make something the kids would like, but was a healthy snack as well. The potato farm was a good, solid business, but the family was not rich, so an inexpensive homemade family treat was worth researching. Kerr was persistent and experimented with different recipes for more than a year, finally finding one she liked. She left the skin on each potato slice, to preserve all of its healthy vitamins and nutrients. She cooked the chips in small batches, in hot peanut oil, which is low in cholesterol. She even hand-stirred the slices so that each chip browned evenly and didn’t stick. The finishing touch was a dash of sea salt on the cooling chips. The result was a delicious potato chip, extra crispy and free of cholesterol and any added preservatives. The chips also contained the vitamins that commercially produced chips lost, especially when they were peeled. Everyone loved her chips and Kerr felt sure she had a product she could sell. She certainly hoped the profit resulting from her idea might supplement the income from the potato farm. The potato-farming industry was becoming very competitive, and it was increasingly difficult to make a living from just potatoes. Calling her product Miss Vickie’s, she managed to place bags of potato chips in several retail stores around her community of New Lowell, Ontario. Her product was successful locally, so in 1989, she and her husband bought a potatochip manufacturing plant with money they borrowed from the bank, using their farm as security. They were risking everything they owned on Vickie’s idea. They bought the necessary equipment, created a marketing plan that focused on health-food stores, and started making potato chips in large quantities. Kerr insisted, however, that everything be done according to her original recipe. Miss Vickie’s was a premium potato chip which, at the time, was a novelty. They sold for twice as much as other potato chips on the market. Customers loved the crunch and the taste, however, and Miss Vickie’s chips were immediately popular. Kerr expanded her operation from one kettle to six, and within a year, she was selling chips in Toronto, the best retail market in Canada. The increased demand called for expansion, and the business converted a potato-storage building into a processing plant. Sales in the first year exceeded a million dollars. Her second-year sales grew 200 percent! Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School 1 2 3 4 5 31 By now Miss Vickie’s was a big business, adding several new flavours to the line, and opening manufacturing plants in Quebec and British Columbia. It became so big, in fact, it caught the eye of North America’s biggest potato chip manufacturer, Hostess Frito-Lay. The company made a generous offer to buy, and Vickie and her husband accepted. In 1993, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to enjoy the success they had worked so hard to achieve. Today, Miss Vickie’s is still a strong brand for the American-owned Hostess Frito-Lay Company, and still sticks to Vickie Kerr’s original recipe. 6 The World of Business 5th Ed. Hall Catholic Secondary School 40 Section 5: Reading Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow it. Trump Investments Donald Trump gesturing and saying “You’re fired!” on The Apprentice, his wildly successful television show, is etched in the minds of millions of viewers around the world. That phrase sums up what Donald Trump is all about. He’s rich, powerful, confident, and cutthroat. His attitude is what has made him such a successful entrepreneur and real estate mogul, never mind that it has also made him a billionaire. That’s why it’s so hard to imagine that in the early 1990s Donald Trump was broke. Donald Trump was born in 1946 in Queens, New York. Trump’s father, Fred, was in the real estate business, developing housing units for middle-income families. Donald graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics and finance in 1968. Soon after, he began working at his father’s business, Trump Organization. Initially, Trump stuck with his father’s line of business, but eventually moved into highend real estate. Today Trump owns over 18 million square feet of prime Manhattan real estate and many of the focal points of the New York City skyline, including Trump World Tower. The Trump name is synonymous with some of the most prestigious addresses in New York. Trump also has properties in Chicago, Los Angeles, Florida, Las Vegas, Canouan Island, Seoul, Toronto, and Panama. The Trump Organization has major stakes not only in the real estate world, but also in casinos, television and entertainment, bottled water, vodka, corporate education, air travel, golf courses, and even beauty pageants. Trump Organization owns Miss Universe, Miss America and Miss Teen America. It was Trump’s rapid empire building and investment in Atlantic City casinos that led to his financial troubles in the early 1990s. These factors, combined with the economic recession, led to mounting personal and business debt. Unable to pay his creditors, Trump Organization filed for bankruptcy and Trump himself was on the verge of personal bankruptcy. Banks and bondholders restructured Trump’s debt and in doing so, lost hundreds of millions of dollars. In 1994, after selling off some of his assets, such as the Trump shuttle, Trump had paid off $900 million in personal debt and reduced significantly his nearly $3.5 billion in business debt. However, the Trump casinos entered bankruptcy protection again in 2004. Trump’s newest source of fame is his reality television show The Apprentice. On the show, contestants vie to earn a job at Trump Organization. Each episode ends in the boardroom meeting, where Trump fires one or more of the contestants based on their performance. Not only is Trump one of the most successful businesspeople in the world, he is also one of the highest-paid television personalities, making over $3 million per episode. Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School 1 2 3 4 41 Although Trump is a successful television personality, and has twice considered running for president, Trump’s greatest talent is building and developing real estate. And he’s the first to admit that he has worked hard for his success. Trump himself has said, “When people see the beautiful marble in Trump Tower, they usually have no idea what I went through personally to achieve the end results. Support our soldiers, Hillier tells MPs Allan Woods Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA--Canada's top soldier says all Members of Parliament should pass a motion expressing their support for Canadian troops if the Afghan mission is extended past 2009. Gen. Rick Hillier, the Chief of Defence Staff, warned of the corrosive effects of the divisive debate to extend Canada's Kandahar stay to 2011, and said soldiers need to know they have the support of all Canadians when they deploy. The Conservative government and the Liberal Opposition appear to have reached a compromise that would see them put their majority support behind a motion that calls for a shift in the mission to training and development and a withdrawal from southern Afghanistan by December 2011. 1 2 3 The New Democrats and the Bloc Quebecois are opposed to a mission extension. If the motion passes a vote in the House of Commons, Hillier asked MPs to consider passing a separate motion expressing support for the military. 4 Hillier, speaking to a military audience in Ottawa, also said it is important to clear up the question of Canada's future in Afghanistan as soon as possible in order to give clarity both to deployed soldiers and the Taliban insurgents. 5 He suggested that the longer Canada goes without resolving the question, the more the Taliban see Canada as a "weak link" to be exploited. 6 Hillier said a recent spate of suicide bombings around Kandahar could be deliberately planned by insurgents in order to influence the debate here. 7 Excerpt taken from The Toronto Star, February 22, 2008 Robert F. THE CURSE OF MACBETH In a famous scene from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, three witches stand around a bubbling cauldron, brewing up a stew with disgusting ingredients such as eye of newt and toe of frog. Most people are aware of the scene but not aware of the story behind the scene and the curse on the play. 1 In 1606, Shakespeare was asked to write a play for King James I to celebrate the visit of James’ brother-in-law, the King of Denmark. The play Shakespeare devised was the tragedy, Macbeth. King James I could appreciate a good tragedy as he had led a rather difficult life. He was taken from his mother almost immediately after his birth. While he was a child his father was murdered and his mother was then forcibly removed from the throne of Scotland. After spending the next 19 years in prison, she was beheaded by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Meanwhile, James became the King of Scotland at 19 and survived a number of attempts on his life. When Queen Elizabeth died he became the King of England. 2 James loved life in England and he especially enjoyed Shakespeare’s plays. He became a patron of Shakespeare’s, offering royal protection and money to write and produce plays. It was common knowledge that the King was fascinated by demonology and death. In fact he even wrote a book on these topics. Naturally, Shakespeare decided to study the King’s favourite topics and write a play including these elements. Many historians say that the play is actually very similar to the events that led up to the death of James’ own father. Also, Shakespeare, as a result of his research, tried to make the witchcraft scenes as authentic as possible. 3 Unfortunately, some people believe that the spells in the play were too authentic. As a result, every time the words are uttered onstage the play puts a curse on itself. Meanwhile others believe that real life witches were upset that Shakespeare had shared their dark secrets and therefore they placed a curse upon the play which has lasted for over 400 years. During the centuries, the play has been surrounded by so much death and disaster that actors refuse to call the play by its actual name and never quote from the play. 4 The curse was seen right from the first performance, as the actor cast to play Lady Macbeth died from a fever. King James apparently was terrified of knives and gore. In the initial staging, Shakespeare used guts and blood he obtained from a butcher to make the death scenes more convincing. Horrified, James I banned any future presentations of the play for five years. After the ban was over, Shakespeare performed the work at his Globe Theatre which burned down a few days later. 5 65 Section 1: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer) 1 Shakespeare wrote the play Macbeth to: a 4 Shakespeare emphasizes the witches and demonology in the play to: satisfy his Scottish fans a please his audience b remove a curse b please the Queen c please Queen Elizabeth c d entertain James I and the King of Denmark 2 d make the play more interesting The play was banned because: a of the poor acting 5 b of the poor morality in the story c it was dull d the play’s gore offended the King 3 please the King The best meaning of the word forcibly as used in paragraph 2 is: 6 a violently b persuasively c gently d awkwardly The best meaning of the word authentic as used in paragraph 4 is: a realistic b auditory c fake d reliable fashion What happened to the actor first cast to play Lady Macbeth? a he won an Academy Award b he died from a fever c she died when the Globe Theatre burned down d she horrified King James 66 Section 1: Reading Written Answer 7 Summarize this selection. Researchers find PG, PG-13 and R tags often don’t reflect violence levels Movie ratings flop when it comes to warning parents about violence on the silver screen, new research suggests. In an analysis of 98 of the most popular movies from 1994, California researchers found that most PG, PG-13 and R ratings showed little connection to the frequency of violence in the films. Making their Top 3 most-bodily violent films, as a prime example, was The Jungle Book, an animated family movie with a PG rating. “In the end, we believe the system is not working as well as it could,” said study co-author Theresa Webb, a postdoctoral fellow at the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center, part of the University of California at Los Angeles. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), in a rating system established in 1968 and intended for parental guidance, grades movies for nudity, violence, drugs, language and theme and also releases brief descriptions of the material that contributed to the movie ratings, such as “violence,” “language,” “strong sexual content” and “drugrelated material.” The ratings include G for general audiences, all ages; PG for parental guidance suggested because some material may not be suited for kids; PG-13 for parental caution on material inappropriate for kids under 13; R for restricted, those under 17 need an adult along; and the rarely used NC-17, which is the equivalent of the defunct “X” rating and means no one under 17 is allowed into the theatre. 1 2 3 4 Webb and her colleagues looked at 98 of the 100 top-grossing films of 1994, excluding the G-rated “Lion King” and an unrated film called “The Madness of King George.” Their findings, which appear in the May issue of Paediatrics, compared the ratings of the films to the frequency of violence depicted on screen. 5 The top movies of 1994 included Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Mighty Ducks, The Flintstones and The Santa Clause. All but three of the 98 films – Reality Bites, Disclosure and Quiz Show – included at least one moment of bodily violence, the researchers said. In many cases, they added, the violence was designed to be funny. 6 The researchers found the average number of violent acts per film went up as the ratings became less children-friendly. PG-rated movies had an average 14 violent acts, compared to 20 in PG-13-rated movies and 32 in R-rated movies. However, the researchers found that the ratings didn’t coincide with the “seriousness” of violence in the films as they defined it. 7 74 The three films found to have the most body violence in the study were Time Cop, an action film rated R, which had 110 violent acts; The Jungle Book, with 97 violent acts, and True Lies, an R-rated action film that had 91. 8 They also said they found “numerous glaring contradictions.” For one, the researchers said, the MPAA flagged language as the most problematic factor in some films, mostly PG and PG-13-rated, even though the films were as violent as those that were flagged specifically for violence. 9 The researchers also found five PG-rated films that were flagged primarily for language had at least 14 violent acts. “Likewise,” they reported, “in the R category, several films that were rated principally for language were saturated with violence.” 10 University of Michigan psychology professor L. Rowell Huesmann, who studies violence in society, wasn’t surprised by the findings, because he said there 11 , or suggestions of sex, but don’t mind someone being strangled, knifed or shot to death (on screen),” he said. 12 What to do? Webb suggested that parents examine other sources of information about the content of movies, such as online guides, because “they can’t trust that the ratings categories fully consider the violence content in any given film.” 13 (Adapted from Scout News, LLC. The Canadian automobile industry boomed in the 1920s. Before World War I, cars had been expensive and flimsy-truly horseless carriages. After the war, they became more durable and cheaper. In these postwar years, some Canadians bought domestic cars like the Frontenac, the Galt, the Tudhope, and the Russell. Yet, the production of these small Canadian automobile manufacturing companies was overshadowed by the branch-plan output of American car-makers like Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Studebaker, and Willys-Overland. The economies of some Ontario cities boomed because of the increasing car production of American branch plants. Oshawa boomed because of General Motors, and Toronto flourished because of WillysOverland. In Windsor, almost the entire economy of the city and neighbouring communities became tied to the automobile industry. In the 1920s, Windsor factories produced Chalmer, Chrysler, Ford, Menard, Packard, and Studebaker cars. There was also the Godfredson truck company, several large parts factories, and a Fisher body plant (General Motors). Windsor became known as the “Auto Centre of the British Empire,” not only because of the number of factories, but also because it shipped cars to all parts of the Empire. 84 Section 1: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer) 1 2 3 The economy of Oshawa boomed because of: 4 Canadian car company sales were overshadowed by imports such as: a General Motors a the Galt b Ford b the Studebaker c Chrysler c the Frontenac d Willys-Overland d the Russell Why are the words General Motors in parenthesis in the second last sentence? 5 During the 1920s, Canadians were able to afford cars because of: a To show the location of the plant a Increased employment b To identify the company b Lower salaries c To identify the car model c Cheaper mass-produced cars d To describe the current rate of production for automobiles d American imports According to the second sentence, before WWI, cars had been: a expensive and flimsy 6 What new innovation is depicted in the picture? a automobile b durable and cheap b headlights c shipped all over the empire c assembly line d produced mainly in Windsor d indoor factories 85 Section 1: Reading Written Answer 7 Summarize this selection. Automakers put more women at the wheel By Greg Schneider / Washington Post In her second year as a manufacturing engineer at General Motors Corp. in the early 1980s, Mary Sipes had to get a toolmaker to change some of his equipment. He replied that he was not going to take orders "from some little girl." Today Sipes is in charge of all full-size sport-utility vehicles for GM. She is one of a new generation of female executives making their mark in the auto industry, slowly changing a male-dominated culture just as the marketplace is shifting around them. Women represent about half of all licensed U.S. drivers, up from 44 percent in 1972, and they account for a significant and climbing percentage of new-vehicle sales. As a result, the products on North American roadways are beginning to change. Female auto engineers say they are trying to expand the appeal of each vehicle, making them suit women and giving men more than they expected at the same time. "We don't do pink trucks," said Sipes, who as vehicle line director oversees development of GM's full-size SUVs and has women working as an assistant chief engineer and in finance, marketing and program management. "But we now realize these trucks are being purchased by women as well as men. And if you don't have women involved on a daily basis ... in that product design, you're going to alienate those women who would love to buy it otherwise." GM Chairman Rick Wagoner says he is counting on Sipes' new line of trucks to help restore the company's profitability. The designs will include greater visibility, instrument panels that sit lower and farther forward to put more distance between occupants and air bags, adjustable pedals for drivers of different sizes and lightweight materials so that seats and doors can be moved more easily by people with less upper-body strength, all elements that were added by women with women in mind, Sipes said. Such changes are cropping up throughout the marketplace. An entirely new category of vehicle, the crossover, or car-like SUV, has evolved largely from women's desire for a vehicle that is sportier than a minivan but handles better than a truck. The introduction of such features as run-flat tires and the wider marketing of safety technology all trace back to efforts to reach female drivers, said Maureen Sullivan Martin, an industry consultant and spokeswoman for the Automotive Women's Alliance. "I think everyone would agree we have a long way to go, but the manufacturers and suppliers are embracing" an emphasis on women, Martin said. "It may be slow, but it certainly has a high return on investment." 1 2 3 4 5 6 98 "Advertising for cars and trucks is still heavily male oriented, dominated by images of wild speed, trucks pounding up mountains and lots of mine-is-better-than-yours," said Marti Barletta, a specialist in marketing to women who has consulted with major auto companies. "There is very little indication of any attempt to understand what types of communications women respond to," Barletta said. "I just find myself astonished that the largest consumer industry in the world doesn't know who its primary buyers are." "Society has changed in the past 30 years, and women have far more buying power than ever," she said. Although studies have long suggested that women influence almost all carbuying decisions, statistics show that women are making more and more of those purchases themselves. "What has really changed in the industry is the consumer. The 'he' is now a 'she,' " said Donna Kane, who recently retired as a marketing director for Hyundai in North America. Although such Asian companies as Hyundai come from male-dominated business cultures, they have done better than their Detroit rivals at appealing to female customers in the United States, statistics show. So far this year, women accounted for 36 percent of all new car and truck purchases, according to the Power Information Network, although some in the auto industry say the figure is closer to 45 percent. In certain segments, especially compact cars and midsize cars, women make up nearly half of all buyers. Women also account for at least half of all sales at Volvo, Honda and Toyota, and for about half of all sales of the newly redesigned Ford Mustang. Some progress has been made: seven women are among the 52 top corporate officers at Ford, that's up from one in 1996, and the company leads the U.S. auto industry. Similarly, Ford employs about 2,100 women with engineering degrees, compared with nearly 11,100 male engineers. The number of female engineers has more than doubled since 1990, and the number of men has increased about 21 percent. "It has improved significantly from five to 10 years ago, but we really still are just beginning to tap (women's) business knowledge," said Felicia Fields, Ford's vice president of human resources, adding that too many women at Ford are in staff positions instead of having responsibility for profit and loss. But the old, male-dominated car culture will not die easily. Karen Rafferty, who directs Cadillac Motorsports and oversees marketing for the Vseries performance Cadillacs, found that out a few weeks ago when she entered an amateur racing tournament and was blocked from competing directly against men. She proceeded to post a faster time than all but three men out of a field of 110. "That made people stop and look," Rafferty said. "You just have to prove your salt anywhere you go." 7 8 9 10 11 11 99 Section 1: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 According to the article, the number of women drivers since 1972 has: a 4 doubled a gone from 44 to 50 percent c How many of the buyers of compact to mid size cars are women: a all 5 The overall purpose or point of the article is: a b half c 3/4 d none 2100 d none d increased by 20 percent 2 11, 100 b 21 b been reduced c How many women with engineering degrees does Ford employ? to show the biases that women in the auto industry have had to overcome b to show that the auto industry has not been biased against women c to show how many women are entering the auto industry d to show how few women there are working in the auto industry 3 Since 1996, the number of women who were in top corporate offices at Ford has increased by: a 7 b 6 c 52 d none 100 Section 1: Reading Written Answer 6 Summarize this selection. December 9, 1906 - January 1, 1992 Written by Rebecca Norman, Class of 2000 (Agnes Scott College) Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was born in New York City on December 9, 1906, to Walter Fletcher Murray and Mary Campbell Horne Murray. She was intensely curious at an early age. Hopper's parents provided a strong foundation for her inquisitiveness. Her father encouraged all his children, through his speech and example, that they could do anything if they put their minds to it. He inspired Hopper to pursue higher education and to avoid being limited to typical feminine roles. In 1923, at age 16, Hopper applied to Vassar College. However, she failed a Latin exam and Vassar told her she must wait a year. Undaunted, she became a boarding student at Hartridge School in New Jersey, entering Vassar the following year. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar in 1928, with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Physics. In 1930, at age 23, she received her Master's Degree in Mathematics from Yale University. A year later, Vassar hired her as a mathematics instructor, for a salary of $800 per year. Hopper taught at Vassar from 1931 until 1943. During that time, she earned a Ph.D. from Yale in 1934 and was promoted from instructor to associate professor. 1 2 With the outbreak of World War II, Hopper made a life-altering decision to serve her country by joining the Navy. The process was not an easy one. At age 34, weighing 105 pounds, she was considered overage and underweight for military enlistment. In addition, her position as a mathematics professor was declared crucial to the war effort. Navy officials asked her to remain a civilian. These obstacles did not stop Grace Hopper. She obtained a waiver for the weight requirement, special government permission, and a leave of absence from Vassar College. In December 1943, she was sworn into the U.S. Naval Reserve. She went on to train at Midshipman's School for Women, graduating first in her class. Hopper's first assignment was under Commander Howard Aiken at Harvard University. There she became the third programmer of the Mark I, the world's first large-scale automatically sequenced digital computer. The computer was used to calculate aiming angles for Naval guns in varying weather conditions. Because the numbers were so pertinent, Hopper and her assistants were often required to run and monitor the system twenty-four hours a day. Hopper received the Naval Ordinance Development Award in 1946 for her work on the Mark series. 3 4 During her work with Mark II, Hopper was credited with coining the term "bug" in reference to a glitch in the machinery. It is the case that she and her team of programmers did find a moth which flew through an open window and into one of Mark II's relays, temporarily shutting down the system. The moth was removed and pasted into a logbook. 108 5 At that time the use of the word "bug" referred to problems with the hardware. In the mid 1950s, Hopper extended the meaning of the term "debug" to include removing programming errors. 6 In 1946, at forty years of age, Hopper was told that she was too old to remain in active service. Turning down a renewed position at Vassar, Hopper chose to remain at Harvard as a civilian research fellow in Engineering Sciences and Applied Physics until 1949. She left Harvard to join Eckert-Mauchley Computer Corporation as a senior mathematician. The gamble paid off when the company introduced the BINAC, Binary Automatic Computer, which paved the way for production of the first commercial computers, UNIVAC I and II. She also developed the first compiler, A-0, which translated symbolic mathematical code into machine code. The A-2, a revised version, became the first extensively used compiler, laying the foundations for programming languages. Hopper's next move was radical. She suggested that UNIVAC could be programmed to recognise English commands. Despite ridicule from her peers, Hopper succeeded in developing the B-0 compiler, later know as FLOW-MATIC, which could be used for typical business tasks such as payroll calculation and automated billing. 7 It soon became apparent that a standardized, universal computer language was necessary. In 1959, the first specifications for the programming language COBOL appeared. Members of Hopper's staff helped to frame the basic language design. In 1966, Hopper's age forced her to retire from the Naval Reserves. However, in less than seven months, the Navy, unable to develop a working payroll plan after 823 attempts, recalled Hopper from retirement in order to help standardise the high-level Naval computer languages. Her reinstatement made her the first Naval Reserve woman to return to active duty. Her original re-appointment was for six months, but it was later extended indefinitely. In 1983, by special Presidential appointment, Hopper was promoted to the rank of Commodore. Two years later, she became one of the first women to be elevated to the rank of Rear Admiral. In 1986, after forty-three years of service, RADM Grace Hopper ceremoniously retired on the deck of the USS Constitution. At eighty years, she was the oldest active duty officer at that time. Hopper received numerous honours over the course of her lifetime. In 1969, the Data Processing Management Association awarded her the first Computer Science Man-of-the-Year Award. She became the first person from the United States and the first woman to be made a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society in 1973. She also received multiple honourary doctorates from universities across the nation. The Navy christened a ship in her honour. In September, 1991, she was awarded the National Medal of Technology, the nation's highest honour in engineering and technology. However, over all these distinctions, Hopper claimed her work as a teacher as her most important and rewarding accomplishment. Admiral Hopper's perseverance and unconventional style led her to great achievements in all her professional endeavours. Never forgetting her father's example, she took on the established system and won. A true pioneer, she helped to pave the way for modern computing, as well as professional women everywhere. Hopper truly lived up to her motto "Dare and Do." 8 9 10 Rear Admiral Grace Brewster Murray Hopper died January 1, 1992. She was buried with full military honours at Arlington National Cemetery. 11 109 Section 5: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 Initially, Grace was not allowed to join the Navy because: a 4 of health reasons a b she was a woman c According to Grace Hopper, what was her greatest achievement? retiring as the oldest serving rear-admiral b becoming a Distinguished Fellow of the of her age, weight and occupation British Computer Society d she was married c being awarded the National Medal of Technology d her work as a teacher 2 Grace’s father had a major impact on her life as a result of: a his love for mathematics b his determination to succeed c his own military background d his strong marriage 3 5 The best meaning of the word undaunted as used in paragraph 2 is: a angry b resentful c creative d determined What was the first, universal computer language? a COBOL b UNIVAC 1 c BINAC d RADL 110 Section 5: Reading Written Answer 6 Summarize this selection. Some of the major industries of Belgium include steel and chemical manufacturing as well as chocolate and exceptional quality beers. 5 Modern Belgium is often called the unofficial capital of Europe. 6 Following occupation by the Germans in World Wars I and II, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands came together to be the founding members of NATO and the European Union. This very international country is now the headquarters for these two organizations in addition to other major international associations. 7 116 Section 1: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer) 1 Evidence of Belgium’s historic wealth are: a 4 churches, town halls and museums b 200% music and dance 20% c d 12% d money 2 2% a b streets and landscape c Belgian workers produce _______ more per person than Japanese, German and American workers: Belgium prospered: a after World War I 5 gold and silver a b during World War I c Some of Belgium’s major industries are: b chocolate and lead before World War I steel and chemicals c d never d beer and wine 3 Belgium has always been able to maintain its economy due to: a being the world’s largest producer of waffles and truffles b strong government and people c high industrial production and central position in Europe before World War I. d speaking French. 6 Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands were the founding members of: a The Allied Association of World War I b NAFTA and the League of Nations c NATO and the European Union d The Euro-American Alliance Group 117 Section 1: Reading Written Answer 7 Summarize ONE aspect of this selection. Sports and Recreation In France, soccer, which the French call “le football”, and cycling are probably the most popular spectator sports. In 1998, France’s greatest sporting moment came by beating Brazil in the World Cup soccer tournament. After the match, millions of excited supporters poured into the streets of Paris to celebrate. This was a long awaited victory for the French national team. 1 The Tour de France, an annual international bicycle race, is another event where crowds of people show up to offer support. This race is the world’s most prestigious bicycle race. For three weeks in July, 1998 the world’s top cyclists compete over a course of more than 3,000 kms. 2 The route changes each year, but always includes three areas: the Alps, the Pyrenées, and a finish line on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Cyclists in the race compete for three special jerseys: the “maillot à pois rouges” goes to the king of the mountains, the “maillot vert” goes to the points leader, and the coveted “maillot jaune” goes to the race leader. The French Open, one of four major tennis tournaments in the world, is held annually in Paris at the Roland Garros Stadium in late May and early June. 3 The very diverse geography of France makes it perfect for a multitude of sporting activities. The mountainous areas of the Alps, Pyrenées, Jura, Vosges, Massif Central and some of the mountains in Corsica are home to over 400 ski resorts. The ski season usually lasts from about December to March, with January and February having the most favorable conditions. 4 France’s terrain also lends itself to hiking. Its land is crisscrossed by more than 120,000 kms of walking and hiking trails. These trails pass through various kinds of terrain and through every region in the country. France is also a great place for water sports enthusiasts. The areas along its coasts provide both pebbly and sandy beaches. During the months of July and August, the island of Corsica, as well as beaches along the southern coast, is popular among beach goers. Surfing and windsurfing in France are most enjoyed along the Atlantic coast around Biarritz where waves can reach as high as 4 metres. White water rafting, canoeing and kayaking are usually done on many of France’s rivers including those rivers that flow down from the Alps and Massif Central. 5 6 124 Section 5: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 The two most popular spectator sports in France are: a 4 a soccer and cycling c swimming and soccer Soccer in French is known as: a 5 le football américain le foot In what year did France beat Brazil in the World Cup? a 1969 b 1989 c 1996 d 1998 the Alps b the Pyrenées c d le ball 3 The Tour de France always includes the following areas: a b le football c Paris d Marseilles d fishing and bird watching 2 Geneva. b the Pyrenées. b soccer and windsurfing c The French Open is played in: the Champs-Elysées d all of the above 6 There are approximately ___ ski resorts in France. a 200 b 300 c 400 d 500 125 Section 5: Reading Written Answer 7 Summarize this selection. Among Giants: A Role Model By Mark McNeil Every now and then, an athletic achievement comes along that not only explodes the bubble of fan expectations but becomes so celebratory that people who don't even understand the rules cheer about it. Such is the case with Steve Nash's stunning triumph among the giants of the National Basketball Association. Somehow, a soft-spoken, 6-foot-1 Canadian from Victoria is being revered as the best player in the NBA. 1 The Phoenix Suns point guard beat out 7-foot-1 Miami Heat centre Shaquille O'Neal for MVP honours by 34 points in the fourth-closest margin since the media began determining the winner 25 years ago. Nash's story is one of average gifts and boundless determination. After other players went home, Nash would stay behind at the gym practising jump shots over and over again until his body ached and his fingers swelled. 2 He was so fixated on his regimen of self-improvement that he would work on his ball-handling by bouncing a tennis ball around campus as he walked from class to class. He made the NBA draft, but with little fanfare, the 15th player chosen in 1996. No one expected him to do better than backup guard in a mediocre career. 3 4 But through sheer determination he proved everyone wrong. He was the tortoise that not only beat out the hare but he outdid a string of Goliaths as well. While he held the highest of goals for himself, he never lost sight of the importance of team. In a game of big men with big egos, Nash stood out for unbridled unselfishness. True to form, at a news conference after the MVP announcement Sunday, he insisted that his Phoenix Suns teammates join him on the stage. 5 "It's incredible. It's been a long road for me and I feel really proud to have accomplished this playing as a team, just trying to be a good team-mate," he said. "That's the only way for me to highlight what I do as a basketball player." 6 The achievement is being seen as one of the biggest in recent Canadian sport history, comparable to Mike Weir's Masters win in 2003 and Larry Walker's National League MVP award in 1997. It's even transcending sports as a parable for all who dream. 7 "Steve Nash is an inspiration to everyone," B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said in a statement Sunday. "Nash's career is a testament to the fact that big dreams, hard work and dedication can take you to the top of your game, no matter what you play or do." 8 And no doubt, wherever he is, Dr. James Naismith is cheering as well. He is the Canadian who invented basketball in 1861 in Ramsay Township, near Almonte, Ont. His game that started with two peach baskets and a soccer ball has grown to be more closely linked to American inner cities. But that was before Steve Nash. 131 9 Section 1: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 When Steve Nash won the MVP he played for: a b c d 2 In paragraph 2 why does the author place a comma after the word home? 4 a To emphasis home b To separate an introductory clause from the rest of the sentence c To focus the reader on the second part of the sentence d To indicate a list of ideas will follow The Goliaths The NBA The Phoenix Suns Ramsey Township The underlying message of the article would be: 5 a Canadians rarely win awards. b hard work and perseverance will be rewarded c all Canadians can play basketball d it pays to be soft-spoken 3 The best meaning of the word boundless as used in paragraph 2 is: a b c d limitless practicing repetition logical Why did the author choose to conclude the article with a paragraph on James Naismith? Sue’s Story I knew I didn’t want to. It was hard and nobody seemed to understand, living in a new town and all. Although, this was not the first time we had picked up and moved. I had been to four different high schools in the past year and I couldn’t remember 1 anyone’s name. This time my dad promised me that this was it; no more moving, no more switching between parents. Finally, a life! With a little coaxing, I signed up for my new church’s youth group. It is not like our family was religious but we did go for the biggies - Christmas and Easter. I figured it would be a way to make friends before school started again. Monday came. I went to my new school, like I did every other time, by myself. My dad had to work, like always. In fact he works a lot, and the more I think about it, I think he never comes home because he doesn’t want to face the truth. Besides, when he is home all I ever hear is that distinct click of a bottle of rum pouring that next drink. He promised to pick me up that day, but I expected to walk home, that is if I got through those next two classes after lunch. I turned to go but somebody stopped me; a boy and a very cute one at that! I recognized him. I sat at the “cool” table which was very obvious, as my new school was very divided. He gave me a piece of paper and winked at me. Then he and his group left with a few girls telling me they would see me there and that they hoped I would come. At my other schools, I had never really fit in and this was my chance! Finally a chance to have some real friends! I looked at the paper in my hand and it was a flyer telling about a party tomorrow night. After school I headed to the mall to buy a new dress. I was so excited that night that I forgot about my dad and everything else. The day of the party I asked my dad for the car. He mumbled something about how bad work was and then I heard that clink. I took the keys and ran out of the house with only the party on my mind. When I pulled up I didn’t see anyone. I parked down the road because there were so many cars. I found everybody in the back, drinking. I was not a big drinker. I had a glass of wine at weddings or at special events but never bingeing. I knew the dangers of drinking and driving and all the statistics that schools give out. I knew that I would never do something like that. Two girls from the group who gave me the invitation came over; well, actually fell over to talk to me. “You’re the new girl right? Here’s a little welcome present.” I took a couple of coolers and the mickey of rum from them. Not intending to drink it though; well, maybe 2 3 4 5 6 139 only a little. The girls stood there until they had seen me drink a little and then they moved on. I continued on my way through the party running into people. “Oh that’s right, you’re the new girl” was all I heard and then I drank a bit with them. Well, I guess those small amounts of drinking added up. I was about to leave because I had to get the car home, when I finally ran into the boy from school. We talked a bit and he gave me 7 some of whatever he had. I tried not to, but he was so charming and I didn’t see any harm in it. One more sip wouldn’t hurt anything. I told him I was leaving and he asked if I could drive him home. It wasn’t far out of my way, so I said yes. Everything was awesome; I was finally fitting in! That was until we turned down the last road to his house. I could barely keep control of the car and my eyes were so blurry I couldn’t tell a tree from a road sign. But I didn’t want to stop because I didn’t want to seem like a pushover in front of him. My body felt heavy and my foot pushed harder on the gas. I strained to stay on the road, almost straying off once but I managed to stay on. One more road and we were there or so I thought. I was drowsy but I forced myself to stay awake when we passed what I thought was the last road. 8 All I remember was that scream. Whether it came from him or me I am not sure but that sound is as clear as the day is light. I woke up wondering why I was on the ground. My stomach and head had a dull ache and I could taste something thick in my mouth. I was 9 facing something although I couldn’t make it out. It looked like a scrap of metal. The air was eerie and it was dead silent. I tried to get up but my legs wouldn’t move. I think I blacked out again because the next time I woke I saw his body being carried away. I remember screaming, wanting to know what happened, but then I remembered. It was my fault. I found out later that “his” name was Jeff Williamson and that he left behind two loving parents and three younger sisters, a hockey scholarship and honours in his schoolwork. I, on the other hand, lived. That scrap of metal was all that was left of the car after hitting 10 the tree. The doctors were able to save me and I was able to walk again. No permanent damage. People tell me that I was lucky, but I don’t think so. I have to wake up every day knowing what I did. I have to go to school every day and see it in their eyes. I killed him. 140 Section 5: Reading Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow it. 1 Sue’s story was about: 4 a making best friends Sue arrives at the party and meets two popular girls and succumbs to: a laughing at their jokes b rebelling against her dad b peer pressure c substance use and abuse c drinking excessively d meeting boys at school d boredom 2 Sue’s dad is always: 5 a a supportive father What did Sue really want more than anything? a her driver’s license b home b to meet a boy c helping Sue with her school work c to fit in d abusing alcohol d to move to another school 3 Sue has never experienced this before the party: 6 What was the result of Sue’s poor decision making? a binge drinking a she made new friends b coaxing b she killed someone c youth groups c lost her license d driving d her peers did not judge her 141 Section 5: Reading Written Answer 7 How could Sue be more responsible and still fit in with her group of friends? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Rough Notes Use the space below for rough notes. Poor children shut out of sports Top 10 Sports By Elaine Carey Demographic Reporter Percentage of Canadian children aged 5 to 14 who participated in: Most poor children are missing out on the 1 chance to participate in organized sports, according to a new study. Less than half of the children from homes 2 with annual incomes under $40,000 are active in sports, compared to three-quarters of those with incomes of $80,000 or more, Statistics Canada says. 3 Slightly more than half of all children aged 5 to 14, or 2.2 million, took part in some kind of organized sport activity in 1998, according to a Stats Can survey. Participation rates were almost identical 4 for two-parent families. If they were involved in sports at all, children from poorer homes were more likely to play relatively inexpensive games like baseball and basketball, while high-income kids were more likely to be downhill skiers and swimmers. But active kids generally come from active families. 5 Almost two-thirds had at least one parent who was involved in organized sports. 6 Most of these parents were athletes 7 themselves, but they were also volunteer coaches, managers and fundraisers. About half of the active children participate in more than one sport. Children with two active parents and 8 a household income of $80,000 or more were 12 times more likely to participate in sports than those with inactive parents and low incomes. The study confirms a “disturbing trend;” 9 that better-off kids are more physically active, says Art Salmon, technical director for Participaction, a non-profit organization that promotes fitness. That can only get worse in Toronto 10 where schools, as well as parks and r ecreation facilities, now charge user fees for their facilities, he says. “That is making it prohibitive for certain parts of society to get good physical activity,” he says. The Church’s use of symbols and rituals The Church has the mission to offer a special type of life and memory. It brings to memory the event of Jesus Christ and invites us to become part of this. As with all symbols and rites, the Church’s sacraments have a bodily and a spiritual component. Each of the sacraments has something to do with our body: touching, washing, anointing, embracing and so on. Cultures express their deeper beliefs, values and meanings by using symbols and rituals. Since we are both spirit and body, we use material objects to signify spiritual realities. We express our greatest desires, convictions and ideas using symbols of all kinds. We make these symbols effective through rituals. Human life is surrounded by symbols and rituals. The human spirit seems endlessly creative. 155 Section 4: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 What is the symbol for service of leadership? a 4 Ordination to Ministry a b Bread and wine c Water What is the name of the rite associated with being made part of the Eucharistic Community Sealed with the Holy Spirit? a c 5 Confirmation a Reconciliation b Eucharist c Funeral Rites d Marriage anointing with Holy Spirit b immersion in water Death What rite is associated with the life event of growth in maturity? Radio Announcer Didn’t Let Blindness Get in Way of Pursuing His Chosen Career Kelly Ashton was not willing to let anything get in the way of achieving his dream career, not even being blind. “I had always wanted to do radio since I was eight or nine,” he said leaning back in his chair, one hand resting on his white cane. Mr. Ashton is well on his way to achieving his goal. He obtained a contract position at CJCS Radio in Stratford, Ontario, working as the midnight-to-7 a.m. on-air announcer. 1 But his job at CJCS came after a long hard struggle for Mr. Ashton, who was born blind. The 33-year-old has retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disease that attacks the retinas in the eyes, leaving the individual with little or no sight. Mr. Ashton is able to see light but says he can see only two to five per cent of what the average person sees. “It is very little, but if I lost it, it would be traumatic,” he said. 2 Being visually impaired hindered him in his pursuit of a job in radio. The London, Ontario resident wanted to become an on-air personality since he was a child. Mr. Ashton and his father would record radio plays and tour London radio stations trying to get them on the air. He was discouraged from pursuing a career in radio by people telling him it was not practical for the visually impaired. His family and friends, however, encouraged him and supported his choice. 3 Mr. Ashton applied and was accepted at Fanshawe College. There he learned about on-air announcing, working the equipment and spending time on the college radio station. Although his melodic voice, quick wit and sense of humour were obvious signs he would excel on-air, there were many obstacles standing in his way. “It was tough. The market was bad to get into anyway,” he said. “And people were leery about hiring someone disabled.” To accommodate his inability to see, radio stations using computer touch-screens to run music programs must find alternative ways to let Mr. Ashton know what songs are coming up and when commercials are scheduled. One solution is a Braille printer, which prints the program log onto large sheets of paper. During a seven-hour shift, Mr. Ashton needs to print roughly 57 pages. “It looks like Fred Flintstone’s newspaper,” he joked. However, the Braille pages tend to make rustling noises while Mr. Ashton is on-air and the printer is expensive. In order to troubleshoot any problems that might arise during a broadcast, Mr. Ashton memorizes aspects of the recording studio and knows how to operate the equipment manually. 4 5 157 Finding an employer willing to take on the added expense of hiring a visually impaired announcer proved difficult for Mr. Ashton. He was able to obtain a contract position at CJCS with the help of Human Resources Development Canada’s (HRDC’s) Opportunities Program. The program provides funding and resources to assist individuals with disabilities find and maintain employment. CJCS hired Mr. Ashton for a four-month contract position to talk Perth County residents through the early-morning hours. “The people here gave me a chance,” he said smiling. 6 “Kelly is treated no differently from the other announcers,” explained Eddie Matthews, morning announcer and program director at CJCS. “He performs marvelously on-air.” 7 Mr. Ashton said he has gained confidence in his abilities while working at the radio station and will use those qualities in future employment. Despite the difficulties Mr. Ashton has encountered in the pursuit of a radio career, he refuses to give up. “My love is on-air radio work,” he said emphatically. 8 158 Section 5: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 Why would Kelly Ashton have been attracted to a career in radio ever since his childhood? a 4 a He expected it would be an easy job c d most to least important 5 one hundred percent c from eight to nine percent The Braille printer helps Kelly Ashton to a use the computer b operate equipment manually c avoid making rustling noises on air d know when commercials are scheduled It allowed him a chance to be involved in government d It provided the people of Perth with information about the physically challenged d ninety-five to ninety-eight percent 3 It subsidized his job at CJCS Radio b . It's not so easy binning green Initial report proves disappointing Landfill gets one-quarter of contents PAUL MOLONEY CITY HALL BUREAU You've spent many unpleasant minutes wrist-deep in potato peelings, chicken bones, tea bags, eggshells and pizza crusts softened by soured milk. That's just the stuff a family newspaper will tell you about. 1 And you've done this stomach-turning, nose-clenching job because you were told separating your wet garbage from your dry garbage was saving the planet for your children's children's grandchildren. Now you're going to read something annoying. The much-vaunted program may be well-intentioned — but so far, as a boost to the environment, it stinks. 2 3 Just one-quarter of the waste that Toronto residents drop into their green bins becomes compost, according to the first study of what happens to the organic waste after it's picked up. 4 The rest is flushed down the sewers, burned off as methane gas, or — fully 25 per cent of it — trucked to a Michigan landfill. Those figures, from a study of the city-run facility that handles one-quarter of the city's green bin waste, came as a surprise yesterday to city councillors. 5 "I do think the public would have assumed that basically 100 per cent would turn into compost," said Councillor Jane Pitfield, Works Committee chair. 6 The Dufferin Organics Processing Facility, on Vanley Cres. near Dufferin St. and Finch Ave., can handle 25,000 tonnes of organic waste a year. Outside contractors handle a further 70,000 tonnes, but the report didn't look at these facilities. 7 About 25 per cent of the material delivered to the Dufferin facility ends up in a Michigan landfill. Some 32 per cent flows into the sewer system after processing is complete, while 18 per cent becomes methane gas, which gets burned off. 8 9 The remaining 25 per cent becomes "digested organic solids" that is trucked to a composting facility north of Guelph and blended with wood chips and yard waste to become compost. 165 Public school trustee Josh Matlow (Ward 11, St. Paul's), campaign director of the Earthroots environmental group, said he was "shocked" by the results. 10 "I think it's an issue of both environmentalism and integrity," he said, adding that people need assurance that the green bin program does what politicians said it would do. Otherwise, why should they go to the effort? 11 "If 100 per cent of this is not becoming compost, then the public needs to know why." Even the chair of council's source-separated organics subcommittee was surprised. Councillor Adam Giambrone (Ward 18, Davenport) believed the landfilled amount would be much lower. 12 One problem may be that green bin users are putting in materials such as plastics that should not be there. Giambrone said everything from batteries to shampoo bottles has been found in green bins. 13 "It's definitely an issue for people processing the material — it basically doesn't break down normally," Dr. Bryan Imber, a Victoria, B.C., environmental scientist, said in an interview last night. "You have to try to screen it out. The more plastic you have, the harder it is to produce clean compost." 14 Imber, too, was surprised by the poor results of the study. On average, he said, 40 per cent of all waste is organic; in an anaerobic system like that used at Dufferin, most of the material should become compost. The liquid remnant could be used as fertilizer rather than sent into the sewers. And "if Toronto is burning off the methane gas, that's as bad as putting (the waste) in the landfill," he said, since methane makes up 10 per cent of greenhouse gases. The green bin report, by the city's solid waste department, was delivered to the works committee this week, which recommended that council ask a professional planning firm for advice on improving the system. 15 16 Pitfield (Ward 26, Don Valley West) said one way to make the process more environmentally friendly would be to burn the methane to produce electricity. But that won't be economically feasible until council decides to double Dufferin's capacity. 17 It costs a lot to run Dufferin — $112 a tonne — and the city might be able to recover some revenue from methane, Pitfield said. "It's true it's not being harnessed, and we need to harness it. It shouldn't be wasted." 18 The green bin program has been promoted as a new way to cut back on the 800,000 tonnes of trash Toronto expects to ship to Michigan this year. 19 Toronto's goal is to recycle 60 per cent of residential waste. The overall rate now is 32 per cent, although single-family homes are diverting 43 per cent. 20 Adapted from The Toronto Star, Mar. 11, 2005. 166 Section 1: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 Digested organic solids do not include: a 4 eggshells. a b pizza crusts. c The word feasible in paragraph 17 means: a c It is 100% composted d It is burned off as methane gas 5 realistic This article is organized in the order of: a b impossible c It is taken by truck to Michigan b It is flushed down sewers potato peelings d plastic 2 Which of the following is not done with excess unrecycled garbage: makes you want to recycle. drawbacks, attention getter, factual details, benefits b attention getter, drawbacks, factual details, benefits d probable c factual details, benefits, drawbacks, attention getter d benefits, attention getter, drawbacks, factual details 3 What percentage of the waste Toronto generates becomes compost? a One-half b One-fifth c One-third d One-quarter 6 The brackets in paragraph 10 are used to: a keep numbers separate b provide a definition c provide additional details d avoid starting a new sentence 167 Section 1: Reading Written Answer 7 Explain what really happens to the majority of Toronto’s green bin composting program waste. LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. A mechanical microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (a laser device) is used to cut a flap in the cornea. A hinge is left at one end of this flap. The flap is folded back revealing the stroma, the middlesection of the cornea. Pulses from a computer-controlled laser vaporize a portion of the stroma and the flap is replaced. Karin Banerd – Science Teacher Karin Banerd does not promote a traditional approach to life. For her, life is about making exciting choices and helping her students realise that there are many different paths people can take to find fulfillment. Karin has always loved animals and nature. While she was growing up, her parents encouraged these interests by allowing her to keep many pets, including fish, birds, hamsters, gerbils and a rabbit! She also liked science and math, although she sometimes struggled with them. Her parents were supportive of these interests, even when her math grades were a little low. She appreciates their support for her interest, since it helped her to keep believing in herself, rather than giving up on something she enjoyed. When she finished high school, she entered the three-year Forestry Program at Sault College, eventually focusing on fish and wildlife technology. Karin spent her summers working in unspoiled areas such as Foleyet, Chapleau and Kapuskasing. She fondly remembers the experience of trekking through the Northern Ontario bush. She eventually wanted a career that didn’t require wearing insect repellent every day but that still enabled her to follow her interests. As a result, Karin took part-time courses at Algoma University College (Nipissing University) in Sault Ste. Marie and correspondence courses from the University of Waterloo. She acquired a Liberal Science degree, then went to teacher’s college at University of Ottawa. Now a high school teacher for Grades 9, 10 and 11, Karin wants to share her love of science and math, especially when she remembers how she and other women were discouraged from taking these subjects in the past. Karin considers her teaching job an interpretive one, in which she translates the information in textbooks so that students can understand it. She sets up labs and activities to spark students’ interests in different aspects of science and wants to impress upon them the fact that “there is a lot of science misinformation, and if students could leave high school thinking critically about all the information that is out there…” her job would be well done. When she sets up labs, Karin mixes chemicals ahead of time, testing the experiments to make certain that they are effective. She shares ideas and expertise with other teachers, learning from them in those areas where her background is not strong. She uses her science background in other aspects of her life, too. Not only does she breed canaries, finches and parrots, but she also writes magazine articles about them. Karin’s is a pretty convincing case for flexibility in building a career path. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Pg. 27 from Nelson Science 10; Ritter et al 179 Section 6: Reading Multiple Choice (For each question below, circle the best or most correct answer.) 1 Karin thanks her parents for: a b c d 2 For Karin, the ideal high school science graduate is someone who: a b c d 3 financial aid supporting her as she struggled with high school math sending her to science camps making her finish high school received good grades loves science thinks critically about scientific information had excellent attendance The best meaning of the word “flexibility” as found in the final paragraph is: a b c d diversity traditional determination concentration Written Answer 4 Why is an exclamation point used at the end of paragraph 2? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 180 Section 6: Reading 5 What do you feel is the central message of this biographical piece? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 6 What do you feel are the qualities of a good teacher? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 7 Explain why you would or would not consider teaching as a possible career. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ 181 Section 7: Writing Writing a Series of Paragraphs Task: Write a minimum of three paragraphs expressing an opinion on the topic below. Best Careers 2009: Hairstylist/Cosmetologist By MARTY NEMKO Posted: December 11, 2008 Overview. In a recent British job satisfaction survey, hairstylist ranked No. 1. It's not surprising: It's one of the few careers in which you please nearly every client. (Save for the occasional one who cries, "What have you done to my hair!") And people tend to be loyal to their haircutter, so if you're pleasant, you can develop plenty of long-term friends or at least acquaintances. After all, there's a lot of time to chat while shampooing, cutting, and torturing hair so it curls or straightens. Other pluses: This career is a fashionista's dream: It's one of the rare fields with good job opportunities in which you're rewarded for staying current on fashion and design. And your job won't be offshored—it may make sense to do robotic surgery from India but not a shampoo and cut. Most men now get their hair cut by a stylist rather than a barber, and more and more men seek out related services such as facials and manicures. So, not surprisingly, the number of male hairstylists and cosmetologists is growing. To succeed, whatever your sex, you must be a great listener so you can unearth what the client really wants. You also need a good fashion and design sense so you can offer appropriate suggestions. Perhaps most importantly, you must be able to translate a great hair concept into a great haircut. In short, you must be a hair artist. In addition, you must be engaging enough that your clients remain loyal and willing to buy the hair and skin potions that represent an ever-larger proportion of a hair salon's profits. With those skills, instead of having to work for low-pay chains, you can likely get hired by a an independent mid-to-high-end salon, day spa, resort, or possibly even a film or TV studio, all of which tend to pay better than the average clip joint. Or, you can open your own. This career's downsides: Especially with the slow economy, pay tends to be low until you've improved your skills and developed a clientele. You're on your feet all day (hairstylists have an above-average incidence of varicose veins) and often into the evenings and weekends, because that's when most people want their hair cut. You have to work with chemicals that may be unpleasant or worse. Most hairstylists get little or no healthcare benefits. Finally, you must react well to dissatisfied clients: Fix the problem if you can, and if you can't, take a deep breath and let it go—we all make mistakes. A Day in the Life. As a stylist in a salon that charges $50 for a cut, you're especially careful to pamper your clients. So, unlike at the $15 salons, you're spending an Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School 1 2 3 4 5 6 186 average of an hour with each one, especially if you're shampooing, colouring, or treating the person's hair, or consulting on a major tonsorial overhaul. That leaves plenty of time for chit-chat. One of your clients today has been with you since you started cutting hair, and now, she also has you cut her son's. On average, you do six or seven "heads" a day. A side benefit of working in a higherend salon is that you spend less time per day using scissors, which means less risk of repetitive strain injury, common among haircutters in high-volume operations. 7 With the slow economy, to make a good living, the number of people willing to pay $50 for a cut is down, so you have to be a master at selling your clients potions, lotions, and notions. ("Did you see those cute pins over there?") 8 No matter how upscale your salon, between clients, you have to sweep the floor and clean your instruments. More pleasant, manufacturers' reps occasionally pop in to clue you in on the latest lotions, potions, and hottest looks. 9 Two mornings a week, you work your hair magic in a nursing home, where you pamper residents who'd have a hard time getting to your salon. At the end of the day, you're happy to get off your feet but still are glad to know that tomorrow is a work day. 10 11 Smart Specialty Wigs and hairpieces. You may find lucrative work building and styling wigs and hairpieces for people who have lost their hair, or even for stage, screen, and TV. 12 Salary Data Median (with eight years in the field): $35,800 13 25th to 75th percentile range (with eight or more years of experience): $27,500$55,500 14 Note: Not including tips or commissions. Also, these data include employees of deepdiscount salons, such as Fantastic Sams and Great Clips. 15 Training Usually, you have to graduate from a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school. Which school? On hairstylist forums, the Aveda Institutes, a nationwide (plus British Columbia and Australia) chain, is touted by many. 16 Full-time programs generally last nine to 24 months. After that, you typically start as an apprentice, which means a lot of cleaning up in exchange for watching a senior stylist and then having the stylist watch you. Continuing education classes are offered, sometimes free, sponsored by a hair product manufacturer. Classes are typically about fashion, hair techniques, or product use. 17 Robert F. Easy ways to save gas By Ian Law Now that fuel prices are climbing at a rate that more realistically reflects the true cost of petroleum products, most motorists dread pulling up to the pumps. 1 However, we are still paying lower fuel prices than in most other countries. 2 According to the Weekly Retail Gasoline Prices website, gasoline in Britain costs about $1.90 (Canadian) per litre to fill up the Land Rover. To fuel up the Ferrari in the land of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it will cost about the same price. In the Netherlands, riders pay more than $2 per litre to keep the moped going. It costs Europeans twice as much per litre of fuel, but North Americans consume more fuel per person than do overseas drivers. But it's these higher prices that may finally make us conserve fuel. 3 4 5 With a little extra effort and some easy-to-follow tips, there are ways to fight back and ease your fuel consumption. 6 * Keep your tires inflated to recommended pressures or slightly higher. 7 * Regularly tune up your vehicle. 8 * Remove your roof or ski racks. 9 * Have your wheel alignment checked. 10 Here are a few pointers most of us haven't contemplated: 11 Before you sign on the dotted line for a new vehicle, take into consideration what its fuel economy rating is. It was probably a bad choice to purchase that big honking SUV or pickup truck the last time. These behemoths are very thirsty and you have to know petroleum prices will only go up. 12 You may want to consider a hybrid vehicle if you do a lot of city driving or a diesel if you drive predominantly highway mileage. 13 Diesel technology has advanced in leaps and bounds since the first noisy, smoky, smelly VW Rabbits of the past. Most motorists could not tell the difference between a diesel or gasoline fuelled modern car when driving them. Robert F. Hall Catholic Secondary School 14 195 A hybrid or small diesel-powered car can reduce your fuel consumption to as little as four or five litres per 100 kilometres. 15 The next most significant factor in fuel economy is the most error-prone part of the package, the driver. 16 Your gas pedal is not an on-off switch. Some motorists will accelerate until they are too close to the vehicle in front of them. They will then brake heavily until they are a safe distance back, only to accelerate again until too close. They will repeat this process. 17 This wastes a lot of fuel and prematurely wears out parts such as brakes. Other tips: 18 * Be smooth with your throttle and maintain a constant throttle opening, instead of trying to maintain the same or higher speeds up hills. 19 * Keeping a safe distance and looking farther up the road past the vehicles in front of you will allow you to react to traffic situations well ahead. With advanced warning, you can slow more gradually to help maintain a constant pace. * Don't race up to a red light. Keep your eyes up the road and pay some attention to the traffic lights at the next intersection. If the lights have just turned amber, there is no point in continuing to accelerate or maintain speed if you know you must stop. Slow down gradually and by the time you reach the intersection, the light may turn green. * If you drive the same route each day, pay attention to the flow of traffic. You will notice a pattern. In some areas, traffic will continue to flow in one lane but is usually stopped in the other lanes. This typically happens in the vicinity of an off-ramp. Vehicles will be exiting the road, reducing the number of vehicles and maintaining flow. By choosing a lane that continues to move, you will save fuel. While on these highways, watch the traffic flow in your lane. When traffic 10 to 20 cars ahead comes to a stop, begin to slow down gradually. Don't wait until the vehicle in front of you begins to brake. 20 21 22 23 24 If you time it correctly, by the time you reach the end of the line in your lane, it will have begun to move again. 25 As the gap between you and the cars up the road widens, you will have a few other vehicles jump in line in front of you. Not to worry, the half a dozen extra vehicles in front of you will only add about a second to your total travel time. 26 As you can see, a few adjustments in driving habits will have triple benefits. It will save you money at the pumps and in parts replacement, reduce harmful vehicle emissions and it can help save you a trip to the collision centre or, worse, hospital. Robert F.
