MARCH 4, 2013
Present: Dean Connie Foster, Deana Groves, Brian Coutts, Timothy Mullin,
Haiwang Yuan, Amy Hardin, Eric Fisher, Kristie Lowry, Jennifer Wilson and Jan
Renusch
Minutes: The February 25, 2013, minutes were approved as submitted on a
motion by Timothy Mullin and a second by Haiwang Yuan.
Dean’s Report/Announcements: Connie distributed copies of Institutional Cost
Reductions and Efficiency Efforts and asked everyone to review and send
comments and additions to her by March 7.
-Also distributed was a draft copy of the University Discrimination and
Harassment Policy for review.
Development: Amy reported that she and Kristie Lowry successfully completed
the Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant application for the SOKY Book
Fest. The amount asked for is $25,000. DGLF has granted us permission to ask
for this amount, and because our event is before the actual announcement date
they will expedite the screening process of our application.
-Amy is traveling to Washington, D.C. March 10-13 and has secured visits with
past library donors, plus has confirmed a $1200 gift to the WKU Libraries
from one donor in the DC area.
-Kristie Lowry has secured a beer sponsor for the Meet the Authors reception.
-Amy and Connie will make visits with donors on Friday, March 15.
Library Systems Office: Eric gave highlights from the LSO:
DLPS: Assisted with an issue when using Permanlinks in EBSCOhost;
troubleshot the duplexer in Glasgow with HP for warranty purposes. HP sent a
replacement the next-day, the new duplexer is installed and haven’t had any
further issues with the printer; installed a new Zebra printer in Circulation
for printing spine labels.
DLTS: Assisted a user with changing their screensaver; assisted with the
setup for a webinar in VPAL; assisted one staff member with a Malware issue;
corrected a setting that was preventing Worldshare from finding books;
installed new Zebra printer on student worker’s PC for printing spine labels;
assisted a user with a browser issue not saving the proper password to login.
Library Systems: Added new AD users; the two sets of three types of Apple
adapters are now in Circulation available for checkout at the circulation
desk for the booths in the Commons; reference sheets on which adapter should
be used for specific devices, along with how to plug the adapters in is also
located in Circulation and at the Tech support desk; assisted setup for two
presentations in Helm 100 and Helm 5.
Literary Outreach: Kristie reported that the food for Book Fest weekend has
been worked out with Aramark, and they will be donating the breakfast and
lunch items for Friday’s events.
-The panel and presentation schedule for Book Fest has been completed.
Kristie is working on finding moderators, and the English Department is
interested in helping.
-The Kentucky Writers Conference information is finally complete, and Krystin
will create the program for it.
Marketing: Jennifer circulated the advertising that was placed in the College
Heights Herald and the Daily News for The Commons, the upcoming KY Live!
program and the art show.
-She is contacting Jim Sears regarding National Library Week and offering a
discount to our Friends. There was mention that National Poetry Month is
April as well so perhaps it can be promoted too.
-She said her office has been working on various Book Fest materials and will
be working swiftly on the Music Promo once she receives all the information
on the programs.
Web & Emerging Technologies: Haiwang reported that he would convene two
meetings this week for the Social Media Study Group and the Web & Emerging
Technologies Advisory Committee. At the Social Media meeting, the use of
social media Instagram will be examined. The second meeting will focus on
responsive design and routine web maintenance.
-Haiwang has been training Library Systems Office staff on what he has been
doing, concentrating on photo uploads and publishing as well as podcast
creation and publication.
-Haiwang has purchased a camera with his grant money and has given the one he
used before to Jennifer. The Cannon camera Jennifer used will be kept in the
Dean’s Office for checking out for Libraries’ events.
Department Reports:
DLSC: Timothy passed around the March/April 2013, issue of American Libraries
magazine with an article by Sue Lynn McDaniel and Nancy Richey “Cultivating a
Special Collection.”
-Timothy said that they are working with PDC to get estimates for renovating
the Special Collections Reading Room.
DLTS: Deana reported that Bib Access student assistants have been trained for
cataloging DLC-level print material for the main library collection.
-Tammera Race is still in need of volunteers to staff the TopSCHOLAR table on
March 23rd at the Student Research Conference.
-The Form 2 for the Electronic Resources position will be submitted this
week.
DLPS: Brian reported that Kentucky’s first lady Jane Beshear visited the ERC
this morning as part of her state initiative to promote literacy in Kentucky
during Family Literacy Week. She toured the library with Roxanne Spencer and
met with a Literacy 320 Class in the ERC before moving on to visit with a
Literacy 199 (book Club) Class in Tate Page Hall. Also on her agenda will be
a visit to the Housing Authority of Bowling Green.
-A memorial service for our colleague Therese Baker, former Coordinator of
the Visual and Performing Arts Library, will be held in the WKU Chapel at
noon today.
-Thursday, March 7 at 7:00 pm at Barnes & Noble one of Kentucky’s leading
environmental writers, Jason Howard, will speak about his newest book, A Few
Honest Words: The Kentucky Roots of Popular Music, published by the
University Press of Kentucky.
-Bryan Carson is this year’s winner of the award for Research/Creativity.
Sean Kinder is this year’s winner of the award for Public Service. The
honorees will receive their awards at a banquet in April.
-The second of two public presentations for Department Head Library Technical
Services is scheduled for Helm 5 on Tuesday at 10 am.
-For the KLA Academic and Special Library Sections Joint Spring Conference,
Sean Kinder, Chair of the Academic Section, will preside over meetings at
Barren River State Park, March 20-22. Steven Bell, President of ACRL, will
give the keynote address. The theme for this year’s conference is “Can You
Hear Me Now? Communicating With Our Users.”
-Three candidates have been selected for interviews scheduled for the week of
March 25 for the Owensboro Librarian position.
-Advertisements for the Glasgow Campus Librarian position have been placed.
