Discipline Students are expected to comply with the rules of the school and the expectations of their teachers. These rules and expectations are based on respect for self and others. All students are expected to contribute to a positive school environment. The school policy at Queen of Heaven regarding inappropriate behaviour is as follows: - discussion with student, consequence - Blue Discipline Sheet – inform parent of incident - teacher contact with parents if behaviour persists - repeated infractions will be referred to the Principal/Vice-Principal. Parents will be contacted. - Serious and repeated inappropriate behaviour will lead to suspension from school and/or loss of privileges. The Catholic Code of Conduct is followed by all schools in Dufferin-Peel. Respect for Property The school building, contents (desks, texts, library books, gym equipment etc.) and grounds deserve the same respect as one’s personal property. Students should not bring valuables or other forms of private property to school. If a student vandalizes school property or loses school materials, they will be subject to making restitution for the cost of repair or replacement. Respect for Peers Students are expected to show respect for the rights of others at all times. Physical and/or verbal harassment i.e. bullying will not be tolerated. The absence of the above behaviour entitles each student the right to an education free of fear and discrimination. Students who are being harassed are encouraged to seek assistance from a Teacher, the Vice-Principal or the Principal. Textbooks Textbooks are supplied to all students. Each student is responsible for returning all school materials at the end of the school year. Replacement and/or repair costs are charged for lost or damaged books. Gym Clothing There is an expectation that students wear appropriate clothing for physical education classes including running shoes. Hygiene, safety and participation indicate that appropriate gym attire and shoes be worn. Telephones With teacher permission, students can use the office phone to call home/parent/guardian. Privilege is not to be abused. Students are requested not to bring cell phones/pagers to school. Lost & Found While the school cannot assume responsibility for lost articles, every effort will be made to help students find misplaced items. Queen of Heaven School has a Lost & Found box/table located in the front foyer. Students, parents and guardians are encouraged to check for lost items. Parents are encouraged to label items, especially winter boots, gloves, hats and sports equipment. Due to the concern, which results from their loss or damage, it is requested that expensive items (jewellery, Walkmans, Gameboys, etc) not be brought to school. Student Dress It is expected that all students will dress in clean, neat and practical clothing. Students who wear T-Shirts with slogans and symbols are asked to be mindful of what is written on them and to ensure they are appropriate for a Catholic School environment. All students are expected to dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Often children’s clothing becomes wet from playing in the snow. Snowpants or keeping a change of pants, socks and gloves at school would be very beneficial, especially if no one is home during the day and/or parents work far from the school. Dry footwear must be worn at all times in the school. Please ensure your child has both indoor & outdoor footwear. Computers & the Internet The Dufferin-Peel C. D. S. B has developed computer and Internet guidelines. Information regarding guidelines is attached to the agreement. Please read, sign and return forms if you are prepared to adhere to them. Students who violate the agreement will lose their computer privileges. Listed below are several of the rules. •The student must not try to obtain system privileges to which they are not entitled. •The student must not introduce disks or programs that contain viruses. •The student must not exploit any gaps in security. •The student must not seek or send images, sounds, or messages that may be obscene, offensive, harassing or inappropriate. •The student will not assist others in breaking rules. Visitors To The School In the interest of safety, we must know who is in the school or on the grounds at all times. All visitors to the school, parents and babysitters included, are asked to use the front doors and must report to the office when picking up students during the day. All visitors are required to wear identification badges that are available at the office. Visiting classrooms during quality teaching time disrupts programming. Parents should not attempt to visit their child’s teacher during class time. When picking up your child for an appointment, please wait at the front office and we will call them down. Volunteers Volunteers enrich the lives of all our students, help staff and the office. Volunteers organize Special Event days; help with Kiss & Ride, All Star Reading, Class Trips and much more. All volunteers must have a Criminal Reference Check. Fire Drills The Fire Code requires that in schools attended by children, total evacuation fire drills are required to be held in each of the Fall and Spring school terms. Emergency Evacuation Should Queen of Heaven school become unsuitable for occupation, the school has an emergency evacuation plan worked out under the guidelines of the school board and in conjunction with our community. If a decision to evacuate is made, our designated location is St. Paul Secondary School. The evacuation plan would be put into practice only in extreme emergencies. Lockdown Procedure It is the policy of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board that no individual shall be permitted to remain in schools while in possession of an article or replica designed as, used as, or intended for use as a weapon. Queen of Heaven will conduct a “LOCKDOWN PROCEDURE” drill, during the first term of the school year. Parents will be informed as to the date of such a procedure. 2012 - 2013 Queen of Heaven School 1198 Alexandra Avenue, Mississsauga, Ontario, L5E 2A5 Phone: (905) 278-9771 Fax: 905) 8 SCHOOL INFORMATION BROCHURE “Together in Faith & Learning” Principal: Mrs. A.M. Illness Children who come to school are expected to participate fully in the school programme. This includes taking recess breaks with the class. The recess break is vital for younger children and fresh air is not likely to worsen a mild cold, if the child is dressed properly. If the cold or illness is severe, we respectfully suggest that the child not be sent to school. A note from the family doctor should be presented for any medical reason a child needs to remain indoors. In the event of severe inclement weather conditions, all children are kept inside. Medication Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually. The student reports to the office at the required time(s). EPI Pen For allergies where an EPI Pen is required, we ask the student keep it in a fanny pack to be worn at all times to ensure immediate treatment if the need should arise. Though students are requested to eat snacks indoors, bees and wasps still pose a problem in the Fall/Spring. Early Arrival Students must remain outside of the school building until 8:30am. Students arriving prior to this time should go to the area where their class assembles for entry. In case of inclement weather teachers on duty will advise the students where to wait inside the building. Kiss and Ride Interested in helping with the Kiss & Ride Lane? Please, contact the office.
