SM TIMES February 2009 Music at St. Martin The Music Department has had a fun and exciting first semester! Miss Vitale and the Concert Band and Choir have performed at many events this year including school masses, the library rededication ceremony, awards night, and parent’s night. The music students have shown their incredible talent, determination and dedication. In December, the Music Department organized a Christmas Concert for parents, friends and family of music students. The night was a huge success, and showcased the musical ability of the St. Martin community. The Music Department will continue to hold regular practices in the Music Room for the Concert Band on Tuesdays after school and the Jam Club on Thursdays after school. As always, new students are welcome and encouraged to join! Come out and express your musical creativity in Room 107. -Miss D. Vitale Student Art A big thank you goes out to Jerrica Paule and Brenda Matampale for their hard work on the new stained glass window designs for our chapel doors. They complement the stain glass windows that were completed a few years back by former students. Please take a look the next time you visit the school. Congratulations to Kailen Jeon who won first place at the district level of the Remembrance Day contest of the Royal Canadian Legion. Her colour poster now goes on to the provincial level, which will be determined in March. Good luck Kailen! Jane Lee, Rachelle Ho, and Bryan Schofield all received Honourable Mention for their submissions. -Mr Halliwell 2470 Rosemary Drive Mississauga, Ontario L5C 1X2 Phone: (905) 279-3171 Fax: (905) 279-3685 Grade 12 Recreation and Fitness Leadership This semester marked the first time that the Recreation & Fitness Leadership course was offered here at St. Martin and twelve brave students signed up for the challenge. The students in the class were responsible for the organization of the Terry Fox run earlier in the year and received many compliments from teachers, administration, community members and their peers. These students were also directly involved in the development and implementation of our Grade 8 Sports Night Program, a program designed to ease the transition from elementary school to high school for our future grade nines. Students traveled to a Camp Medeba, an outdoor education and leadership camp, back in October and will be making a return visit at the end of January. Ms. Silveira would like to extend her thanks and appreciation to the students in this course…their hard work and dedication made the introduction of this course a resounding success. -Ms. M. Silveira Social Justice Club Did you know that the Ukraine has over 180,000 orphans living in 160 orphanages located throughout this large Eastern European country? Many of them have nowhere to go after they leave their only ‘home’ at the age of 18 years. Many are reduced to begging on the streets and still more are recruited into the ranks of the organized crime units patrolling the cities and countryside. A large number of girls are lured into the international sex slave rings that operate throughout Europe, the Middle and Far East nations. Come join St. Martin’s newest social justice club and learn how you can help these unfortunate orphans. The international charity ‘Help Us to Help the Children’ will act as our contact. The club will focus on education of its members and fundraising activities throughout second semester. A donation will be given to the charity and aid in the form of gently used shoes will accompany a St. Martin student who will be working at a summer camp for orphans in Ukraine this summer. You don’t have to be Ukrainian to join, but you should like perogies! Listen to the announcement for meeting times, or come and see Mrs. Ward for more details. -Mrs. M. Ward Legion Awards 2008 ASSISTANT CROWN ATTORNEY MEETS GRADE 11 LAW CLASS Sandra Martins came in to talk to Ms. Pezer’s grade 11 Law class on January 16, 2009. Pieces by Stephanie Burdzy, Stephanie Cardoso and Rachelle Ho were selected for the finalists show this June. Congratulations to all of our artists! ST. MARTIN’S CURLERS ROCK!!! The St. Martin’s Curling team has been very busy competing in league and bonspiel play since the first week in December. The Mustangs competed in the two Mount Carmel Invitational Bonspiels where they came home with the gold medals in both competitions. They participated in the St. Martin’s Bonspiel on Dec. 12th and just came back from the St. Peter’s Invitational Bonspiel in Peterborough where the team stayed overnight and played against some strong curlers from the Peterborough / Lindsay area. Although we did not bring back a trophy we grew as a team and had a lot of fun! This year St. Martin’s has a Junior Boys, Junior Girls and a Senior Novice Boys’ team. They are all currently first and/or second in their ROPSSAA divisions. Keep up the good work Curlers!!! -Ms. L. Cairoli Special thanks go out to Ms. Losenno and Ryan Pestana for designing and editing this edition. In mid December St. Martin’s, in collaboration with The Toronto Maple Leafs and the School Assist Foundation, launched a fundraiser. This fundraiser required St. Martin students to sell a set of four limited edition Toronto Maple Leaf coasters for $10, with a total of $7 of that price going back to the school. This program was developed with the objective of raising funds to support educational, academic, and extracurricular programs directly for our students. To get all students involved there were many incentives offered, including daily prizes, class prizes and top seller prizes. These prizes included an autographed Matt Stajan jersey, a 20’ Sony Bravia TV, a Sony iPod mini HiFi stereo, a Sony iPod Dock Boom Box, a Sony iPod Dock clock radio, Toronto Marlies tickets, and much more. The fundraiser concluded at the end of semester one with the top 5 seller choosing their prizes. The top five sellers were Rachelle Attrache, Daniel Berdusco, Claudia Pozzebon, Michael Pilarski, and Thomas Srilj. -Mr. P. Busby Attendance S. Passmore School Council L.
