Christmas Basket Campaign Reaches Out
Once Again
Christmas
was
yet
again
another
busy and exciting time at St. Martin as our Christmas
Basket campaign continued to reach out to dozens of needy families in our area. Congratulations to all of the
students and staff who generously contributed so much for those who needed it. This year we had
help from St. Cyril Elementary School in Toronto, who did a remarkable job in providing beautiful
hampers for 13 of our families. Thanks to the tireless efforts of several students and some of our
parents and staff members, we were able to deliver these hampers smoothly and on time. One woman made our
Christmas when she was able to tell us that they were on their feet this year and would not be needing our
help. She then thanked us for our generous help in the past and added that when you are on St. Martin’s list,
you are truly lucky because the baskets are always so beautiful and very large. Thank you to everyone involved!

Mount St. Louis Ski Trip
2008 is a Leap year, so on Friday February 29th take a leap and do something different. The Physical and Health
Department is calling on all St. Martin students from grade nine to twelve to join us on our annual ski trip to Mount St.Louis Moon Stone ski resort. You will travel by the coach bus where a selection
of movies for your viewing pleasure will be offered. Before disembarking, load up on some treats/snack for your day long adventure on the hills of Ontario. If you have never skied, take advantage of the free lesson offered to all students, regardless of skill ability. This is a time honoured tradition at St. Martin. We hope that all students will take advantage of this opportunity to come out and be active!
Price $55-65 (cost dependant on rental)
Basketball Champions
Congratulations to the senior girls basketball team for another successful season. With their ages ranging from 13 to 18
years old, the girls worked really well together, successfully achieving their common goal, a ROPSSAA trophy. The ladies
competed against Iona S.S and won the “AAA” ROPSSAA championship. The team
includes Stefanie Kiru, Shannon Hosang, Cassie Paulozza (Captain), Katie Flanagan,
Ashlee Savona, Marina Vistica, Sarah Lynch (Captain), Sara Douglas, Joanna Kapuscinsk,
Illona Kwiecien, Katie Medensky, Randa Dabbour, Ania Prelich, Andrea Linhares, Ashley
Campbell, Gloria Jonak, Adrianna Vistica, Brittany Williams, Michelle Stefanac, and
Stephanie Andrade. We would like to extend out thanks to Julia Suida (manager) and
Ashley Arruda for assistant coaching. Thanks for a great season. Coaches: Mrs. Briand, and Miss Salazar
Mustangs Rock on in 08!
Over thirty-five St. Martin students enthusiastically created five teams in the ROPSSAA league and are standing well
in the league rankings. About 50% of the curlers are absolutely brand new to the sport. February is our big month as the
finals start at the end of February and the curlers are eager to win medals again. Together with the annual preChristmas St. Martin Invitational Bonspiel, held on December 14th, and the Mount Carmel Bonspiel the curlers had
intensive all-day competitions for medals and prizes. Our veteran curlers all vie for a spot on the famous after New Years
Overnight Bonspiel in Peterborough, to be held on February 14th and 15th. It is really a… Funspiel! The Ontario
School Boys Curling Association will see our “Boys” appear on February 2nd in Oshawa as they skillfully coalesced to
power their team to a Regional Victory, won at the historical High Park Curling Club. The student skips continue the
tradition of working with their coaches, Mrs. Briand, Mr. Cairoli, Mr. Bobak and Ms. Lewandowski, thereby, bringing
home the evidence of their mustang spirit top spot, competition medals.
Robotics
The Robotics Team is
well underway to another
successful season. The
team has developed their
robot and it is already
under construction. The
competition is on March
29 and 30. Good Luck!
Grade
10 Literacy Test
On March 27, 2008 our eligible students will
be required to write the mandatory Ontario
Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).
This is a graduation requirement that must be
fulfilled. All grade 10 students and anyone who
has not passed the test must write it on this day.
Failure to do so will result in not graduating.
More information regarding extra support and
format for the day will be sent home at a later date.
If you would like to see sample questions of the test
please visit the EQAO website at www.eqao.ca

SEMESTER 2 NIGHT SCHOOL:
Dufferin Peel and Peel Board night school runs
from February 13 to May 28.
GRADE EIGHT DAY AND NIGHT:
On December 13, grade eight students from St.
Jerome, Mary Fix, St. Catherine of Siena, John
XXIII and St. Gerard visited St. Martin for an
entire afternoon and had the school all to
themselves. Individual departments set up
information stations to familiarize the students
with the courses available to them. Our grade
eight parent information night was held that
evening.
COURSE SELECTION FOR 08/09:
All students received an option/registration
form and course calendars during the third
week of January. These forms were to be handed
in to the student’s homeroom teacher along
with the $60.00 registration fee by January
24th, 2008. Students will receive a
verification form in April. At this time,
students may make changes to their course
selections. If students have any questions about
their course selections, they should make an
appointment with their counselor to review
their situation and assist them with the
preparation of their educational plan.
The Cosmetology Studio Is Now Open
On Tuesday, January 15, 2008, the
Cosmetology Studio hosted an Open

the Mustang community. Services
included hairstyling, make-up, nails, and
basic hair cuts. A big thanks goes to the
St. Martin community. The Cosmetology
Studio is definitely a big hit! We are open
for business on Mondays, Wednesdays and

Dear Parents:
Welcome back to the Dufferin-Peel Cathol ic District School Board for another exciting school year and for
those of you who are new to our board, I hope you find your school to be a safe, caring, Cathol ic learning
environment. It is our aim to provide the best possible learning and fa i th environment for your chi ldren. Our
school board has been given back the authority for the trustees to govern the finances of the Board from th e
Ministry of Education and th is truly is good news.
Education is a co-operative endeavour and as parents please understand th a t you play an absolutely essenti a l
role in your chi ldren’s success. Active parenta l involvement improves student morale, atti tudes and academic
ach ievement. By taking an active role, parents reduce the chances of students not graduating. W hen parents
play a more active role, student academic success increases. We ask you to set h igh expectations for your
chi ldren’s academic accomplishments. A parent’s expectation of success becomes a propell ing force to
motiva te a chi ld. There are many ways to do th is, such as by supervising homework, fostering reading a t
home, limiting TV, MSN messaging, YouTube, video games, and talk ing with your chi ldren about th e
importance of education.
You must a lso set h igh expectations for your school. We welcome your involvement, support and even your
criticism, wh ich when constructive, can help us to improve. Specif ica l ly, get involved with your chi ldren’s
schoolwork and tel l us right away about any possible problems for example, whether work is too easy or too
diff icult. Get to know your chi ld’s teacher and form a partnersh ip.
We look forward to an exciting year working with your chi ldren, developing their ski l ls and encouraging
Gospel va lues.
S incerely,
N ick Mil anetti

Special Thanks from Co-op
The fall Co-operative education program came to an end on Wednesday, January 16th,
with the students’ presentation of their fall placements at the annual St. Martin Career
Fair. Once again the students demonstrated their dedication and enthusiasm towards their
co-op placements. The experience and knowledge our co-op students gain through
placements such as The O.P.P., Mississauga Hospitals, Peel Police, Elementary Schools,
Erin Mills Mazda, Sports Check, Moxie’s Restaurant, Scotia Bank, Hampton Inn,
Mississauga Times, Huron Park Recreation Centre, Sherway Acura, Pascoal Painting,
Burnhamthorpe Animal Hospital, and Foot Locker, to name a few is truly invaluable. We
would like to thank all of our students and the work placements for their contribution to
the co-op program. -Mr. Dziedzina & Mr. Bracco
Physics
News
Another hectic semester for
students of Grade 12
Physics U comes to an
end. As well as preparing
for tests, solving problem
sets, writing-up lab reports
and research papers, these
students have also had to
design an original toy that
involved friction and/or air
resistance and then design
a container that would
protect an egg when
dropped from a height of
two meters while producing the most number of
bounces. All of this proves
that PHYSICS can be
PHUN…..
St. Martin Retreat Program
Each grade 9 class spent a day with Mr. Otto Schmidt, focusing on building self-esteem and community through
scripture, prayer, music and drama.
The Grade 10 students spent the day at the Queen of the Apostle Retreat Center. The focus of their day was to explore
how we fit into the world around us, by incorporating prayer and scripture into everyday situations that affect today’s
young people.
One group of grade 11 students saw a presentation by The Encounter World Religions Centre from Guelph, ON.
Through symbols and artifacts, JW Windland brought to life the various faith beliefs. Students were even invited to
assume the “dress” of various religions, and participated in a relaxing and spiritual yoga session. A second group of grade
11 students was given the opportunity to visit various places of worship. Their day started in the school chapel,
followed by visits to a Hindu Temple, a Buddhist temple and a Jewish synagogue.
In grade 12, Otto once again worked with our classes and invited them to explore the “F Words”: Faith, Fortitude,
Friendship, Forgiveness and Fresh start. Through prayer, scripture, music and drama, students were invited to take a look
at how they are responsible for their future and that their future is now. This retreat provided students with an opportunity
to reflect on how God has influenced the person they are today…the image and likeness of God.

2008 – A Time to (Ex)change!
Students and teachers will be experiencing many changes this semester;
new classes, new teachers and, for one of our teachers, a new country! Miss
Merklinger is on her way to Australia where she will be an exchange
teacher at St. Mary’s High School in Newcastle, NSW for 2008!
Exchanging with her is Mr. O’Regan who will be coming to live in
Mississauga with his family for one year while
teaching Miss Merklinger’s classes. They will
return to their respective homes/schools at the end
of January 2009. Many people have noticed Miss
Merklinger’s much shorter hair do: in preparation
for summer in Australia and to make a donation to
Angel Hair that makes wigs for children with
cancer or other hair loss ailments. Please welcome
Mr. O’Regan to St. Martin as we say bon voyage to
Miss Merklinger, and be sure to show Mr. O’Regan
the wonderful school community and what great
students we have here at St. Martin!
Marketing Fair a Success!!!
During the week of December 11th, Ms. Chiodo’s Grade 11 Marketing students
participated in the first Marketing Fair at St. Martin Secondary School. Students
developed and implemented a marketing plan by conducting research, made
advertising promotions and sold products at lunch. In the process, students learned
how to work collaboratively in a team, make business decisions, assume responsibility
and foster an entrepreneurial spirit. More importantly, students became more aware
of the needs of those less fortunate in our community. Together, they helped raise
$496.38 and donated all proceeds to a student in our community who is a patient of
Sick Kids Hospital. Great work Ms. Chiodo’s Grade 11 Marketing Students!
A sincere thanks goes out to all the students and staff that made it possible.
