Nutrition Notes Nutrition is the study of what people eat and the effects of food on health. Diet refers to everything you eat and drink. An unhealthy diet can lead to the following: • Obesity • Heart disease • Arthritis • Type II Diabetes • Psychological (brain) problems A calorie is a unit of energy produced by food and used by the body. An empty calorie is a calorie with no nutritional value. • 3,500 calories = 1 pound A nutrient is a substance of food that our bodies need in order to work properly. There are 6 classes of nutrients: • Carbohydrates – main source of energy • Protein – builds and repairs cells • Fats – stores energy and keeps us warm • Vitamins – helps your body perform specific activities • Minerals – helps your body grow and develop • Water – most important nutrient; makes up 70% of our bodies Unsaturated Fats are GOOD. Saturated Fats and Trans Fats are BAD. Serving Size is the amount of food recommended. Portion Size is the amount of food you choose to eat. Eating Disorders Notes An Eating Disorder is an emotional disorder in which a person chooses harmful eating patterns. It is usually the result of a negative Body Image. Body Image is the feeling a person has about him or her appearance. There are THREE types of Eating Disorders: Ø Anorexia Nervosa: an Eating Disorder in which a person starves himself or herself and has a low body weight. • Commonly referred to as Anorexia Ø Bulimia Nervosa: an Eating Disorder in which a person stuffs himself or herself and then rids the body of food. • Commonly referred to as Bulimia Ø Binge Eating Disorder: an Eating Disorder in which a person frequently stuffs himself or herself with food.
