SCIENCE DISCIPLINES MISSION
The mission of Biology is to academically prepare students with a strong foundation to successfully transfer directly into a
bachelor’s degree program in Biological Sciences or Professional Health Disciplines by providing quality instruction of
curriculum requirements, and developing critical thinking and quantitative skills in a nurturing and interactive environment.
BIOLOGY STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
a.
Demonstrate a clear understanding of the basic biological concepts and theories and be able to make connections
among them
Assessment: Develop classroom assessment techniques such as Concept Maps, Categorizing grid, Minute Paper. Develop
rubrics to assess the percentage of students performing at each level in our courses. Keep records for the courses we teach
b.
Relate specific biological concepts to the various areas of the biological and related sciences and their
applications to everyday life events
Assessment: Students will be expected to look for applications/current events related to the topics discussed in class in the
news, Internet or daily life events and present to the class or do as short homework assignments. We will keep records of the
assignments for the courses we teach.
c.
Apply the scientific process including designing and conducting experiments, testing hypothesis, analyzing and
presenting data, and drawing conclusions
Assessment: students will be expected to participate in investigative laboratory exercises where they ask a question, develop
a hypothesis, design and conduct an experiment, collect and analyze the data, and present it to the class. These exercises will
expose them to the investigative and interdisciplinary nature of science and will enhance their communication and
quantitative skills. We will keep records of projects for the courses we teach.
d.
Become independent, life-long learners by being able to critically analyze various types of literature including
scientific articles and distinguish between facts and opinion
Assessment: students will be expected to conduct literature searches in biological topics and required to read scientific and
popular literature, analyze the content, present their conclusions to the class and participate in open discussions. Keep
records.
Possible Indirect Assessment: Track retention and transfer rates of students taking our courses. The Office of Institutional
Research will have to do this if needed.
