The Henry B. Tippie School of Management Executive MBA (EMBA)
program was established in 1978 to provide selective and stimulating
advanced studies in business management and strategy for mid- and
upper-level Iowa business leaders. This program has generated more
than 900 alumni since its inception and for the past two years has
been housed in the state-of-the-art Pomerantz Center at the University
of Iowa.
Each fall a new cohort class comprised of 38-42 class members from
prestigious Iowa organizations begins the twenty-one month program.
The class meets one day each week on alternating Fridays and
Saturdays. The average age of participants is 38 with 14-15 postbaccalaureate years of work experience.
Top Iowa organizations have long recognized that the quality of their
leaders directly impacts profitability and ultimate success. Many
organizations including Rockwell Collins, John Deere, Bandag and
HNI, after looking long and hard for management talent and future
leaders, have come to realize that their best strategy is to invest in the
potential of their most promising internal candidates. To this end,
these organizations send their most talented candidates to Executive
MBA programs and in many cases to the EMBA Program at the Tippie
School of Management. However, the Tippie Program must compete
for these candidates whose sponsoring organizations are very much
aware of other EMBA program options for their employees including
The University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Duke University,
etc.
Currently the all-inclusive $47,000 fee covers tuition, books, supplies,
computer software, parking, group luncheons and room and board
during the two on-campus residency weeks and the international
seminar. The fee structure is guaranteed for the participant’s two
consecutive years in the program. Students are required to pay for
transportation to class and airfare for the 7- to 10-day international
1
seminar (during the spring semester of their second year in the
program).
Application of Increased Revenues:
Additional revenues generated by this proposed fee increase will be
used to offset cost increases as well as to enhance the Tippie EMBA
program’s competitive marketplace position. The last cost-based fee
increase for the Tippie EMBA program was in the fall 2005 when a
9.3% increase was instituted to account for international seminar and
overall program cost increases. EMBA program costs, in many areas,
continue to increase.
The EMBA program continues to maintain a keen customer focus on
providing innovative solutions to sponsoring organizations through
curricular changes and offerings. The next level of service to our
corporate sponsors will be an increased emphasis on leadership
development including multi-source feedback tools, assessment
center activities and executive coaching. This will be a major step in
differentiating our program from competitors and adding tremendous
value to our overall offering in satisfying the needs of regional
businesses as they maintain a competitive posture in a highly dynamic
global marketplace.
For fall 2008, the increased fee will apply to 40 new entering EMBA
students (increased revenues of $160,000).
Variable costs for the new executive coaching program are projected
to be $2,000 per student (total of $80,000) and the salary for a new
assistant director who will be integral to the success of this program
will be $80,000 including fringe.
The second year of the fee increase will generate another $160,000,
half of which will cover executive coaching costs for an additional 40
entering EMBA students (fall 2009) and the remaining $80,000 will
cover growing costs for faculty ($30,000), increased staff ($10,000),
recruiting ($20,000) and overall operations ($20,000).
