Art Major 1: Object Drawing
Objectives: In this lesson, you will focus on creating a realistic drawing of an
object from direct observation.
Vocabulary:
Contrast: The use of opposing elements, such as colors, forms, or lines, in
proximity to produce an intensified effect in a work of art.
Value: Relative darkness or lightness of a color.
Chiaroscuro: The technique of using light and shade in pictorial
representation.
Procedure:
 Choose an object that you find interesting
 Look at this object from many different positions to determine what
is the most interesting perspective to draw from
 Create a sketch of the object that takes up at least 75% of the paper,
making it look as realistic as possible
 Shade with a range of pencils to achieve a wide range of value
 The more detail and contrast you add, the more realistic the object
will look
 Be sure to include the shadows that are created by the object itself!
 You are not finished until there is a full range of values from light to
dark
