Students were given a pirate name and they even created their own little pirate to display on Literacy Night. Daryl Cobb’s pirate themed literature inspired us to embrace our inner pirates! Come to Literacy Night to check out our pirate dialogue, student writing samples, and other literacy activities! Argghh- see you next Thursday mates! This week, we began to get into a normal ELA routine by beginning Lesson 19. We will read the biographical selection Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez, which we’ll learn about the man who brought the plight of migrant workers to national attention. We will also read the informational text, The Edible Schoolyard, which tells students how to become community leaders by creating a school garden. We did this by spending some time each day working on our fact fluency as well as by reviewing concepts from earlier in the year. All students had great attitudes and I know they put forth their best efforts this week! Now that our math PSSAs are finished, we are easing back into our Go Math lessons. We are picking up right where we left off with decimals and we look forward to making connections between fractions, decimals, and money amounts next week. Normal math homework assignments will begin again on Wednesday, April 27 (after the science PSSAs are finished)! We learned about valley glaciers, hanging glaciers and all the new vocabulary that went with them. Words like cirques, horn, moraines, crevasses, and icebergs were just a few. We also looked at the parts of our streams from a bird’s-eye view and were introduced to more new vocabulary words to add to our growing list this year. Some of these words included: canyon, tributaries, floodplain, channel, gully, valley, drainage basin, delta, and stream channel. We spent a lot of our time looking at how water affects land, and are excited to begin to explore how land might affect the direction and flow of water.
