Malcolm X Chapter 28, Section 3 • Malcolm Little joined The Nation of Islam when he was in prison and changed his name to Malcolm X • NOI: black Muslims focused on improving conditions for African Americans in the U.S. and blacks around the world • X and the NOI preached that whites were the cause of the problem and black should separate from society • Preached black supremacy and separation from whites • Later resented by other Nation of Islam members for his popularity • In March of 1964 - broke away from the Nation and went on the pilgrimage to Mecca • Malcolm X returned as El-Hajj Malik ElShabazz and preached an extremely moderate message (more peaceful and less separatist than before) • founded a new tolerant Muslim organization (Organization of Afro-American Unity) and proposed working with MLK • On Feb. 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated by members of the Nation of Islam Malcolm X and MLK
