Course Synopsis:
This course has been developed to support and encourage the growing interest in photography by our student body.
Students will learn the basics of Photography. They will be introduced to Photoshop and Illustrator, the industry
standard in digital graphic software. The learning material format for this course will be a combination of
demonstration lectures and tutorials. Students will have a chance to demonstrate the skills they have learned
through a final project. Learning outcomes for this course are grouped under the curriculum organizers: Personal
Management, Computer Literacy, Photography Process and Ethics.

Rationale:
This course has been developed to support and encourage the growing interest in photography by our student body.
The intent of this course is to offer students an introduction to computer graphical arts and help them determine if it
is a possible career path for them or an interest worth pursuing. This course allows students to combine creativitive
and artistic skills, with a camera, and build computer literacy skills.

Unit/Topic/Module Descriptions:
Unit 1: Introduction to Photography
Time: 6 hours
Students will be introduced to photography. Topics of study include the history of photography, the photography
process, photography principles and digital imaging terminology. History of photography will define what
photography is; introduce the pioneers of photography and the evolution of digital photography. The photography
process will highlight the key areas required to create and develop a photograph from start to finish. Students will
finish the unit by creating a simple photography booklet which will highlight all the topics covered in this unit.

 maintain a weekly journal to help document their progress and monitor their time management
 complete a Photographic Booklet and Power Point presentation of newly learned materials

Unit 2: Software Interface Basics
Time: 6 hours
Students will be introduced to Photoshop, Illustrator and Power Point software. This unit is designed to introduce
students to proper file management and graphic interface of the software. Topics of interest for file management
include: creating new project directories, and learning file types and formats. Topics of interest for Photoshop
include: identifying the main components of the graphic interface, creating, manipulating and viewing pictures. The
learning material format for this unit will be a combination of demonstration lectures and individual based tutorials.

o document their progress
o monitor their time management
o record important dates and project deadlines
 complete a self evaluation for each completed tutorial reflecting on their work habits, level of comprehension,
and level of completion

 save/copy project/tutorial files into the appropriate directory:

It is expected the students will:
 identify the fundamental tools of the graphic interface of Photoshop and Illustrator and understand their
function:
o Main menu bar
o Menu sets
o Toolbar menu
 create a properly formatted image at 300 pics per inch
 use transform tools to manipulate photos
 use of camera in both automatic and manual camera settings

Unit 3: Camera and Picture Taking Basics
Time: 36 hours
Students will get started on the photographic basics: vertical and horizontal framing, rule of thirds, picture mood and
picture identification. The framing component will look at the proper set-up of their shots. The rule of thirds
component will look at different photos which use the rule and those that break the rule. Picture mood and picture
identification will look at the purpose of taking the photo, understanding how photos create a mood, and how shot
identification is used in presenting photographs.
Students will also be introduced to the digital camera and all of its automatic and manual settings. They will learn
how they can control light, focus, f stop, aperture, and film speed setting. The learning material format for this unit
will be a combination of demonstration lectures and individual based tutorials.

It is expected the students will:
 demonstrate the steps required to adjust the camera to the picture taking environment
 understand the difference between the different mode features of the camera
 demonstrate the steps required to process a digital image to print or file
 identify through their subjects the mood of a picture before taking a picture
 understand the subcomponents involved in taking a picture (controlling light, focus, f stop, aperture, and film
speed setting)
 understand how to modify a picture once taken, by using the computer software to influence the mood of a
picture

Unit 4: Final Project
Time: 12 hours
Students will use their photographic skills they have acquired in the course to complete an assigned 12 hour project.
This project will encompass all of the photographic techniques presented in the course either through instructional
demonstrations or individual based tutorials. Students will be required to create a photograph scheduling sheet for
the project. This sheet must outline the breakdown of the project into specific components.

 prepare a shooting schedule of their project outlining the following information:
o a journal divided into two sections (one section for each week)
o A breakdown of the work required to complete each section by the end of the week
 maintain a journal book to:
o document the actual project progress
o monitor their time management
o record important dates and project deadlines
 complete a self evaluation for the completed project reflecting on their work habits, level of difficulty,
creativity, and level of completion

 create a new final project file directory
 save/copy the final project in the appropriate directory when necessary:

 demonstrate their photographic knowledge gained in the course through their final project
 use their problem solving skills to overcome different lighting a external conditions of the pictures, creating the
mood of the photograph, getting the subject to be in a position to take a good picture of them, operation of the
camera; these skills should include:
o Accessing help files
o Referencing class tutorials
o Referencing internet animation sites
o Networking with other students
 produce a complete product that elaborates on the basic techniques learned in the course
