Dane Season Falls On Hard Times
Albany Falls To Hartwick;
Shocked In Oneonta,
63-62
by Paul Schwartz
The energy spent in maintaining their furious comeback proved to be too heavy a price to pay by the
Danes last night. After the nationally ranked, Division
II Hartwick Warriors roared to a 26-10 lead, Albany
slowly battled back, closfng to 30-25 at halftime, and
after trading baskets with the Warriors, the Danes finally caught and passed Hartwick with 13:22 remaining.
Albany led 41-40, but the effort expended in gaining the
lead could not be duplicated. Hartwick kept their poise,
utilized their substantial size advantage, and held on to
defeat the Danes 71-63 at University Gym.
U
I think, the comeback took something out of us,"
said Albany coach Dick Sauers. "We started out cold —
we were a little down, but I didn't think we'd be that
flat. Then our shot selection got pretty good — until the
last three or- four minutes. But (Jerry) Fulmer was
unstoppable, and their two big guys were just too big."
The Dane's record dropped to 15-4, and following
Tuesday night's shocking 63-62 overtime loss to Oneonta, Albany's SUNYAC mark stands at 6-2. The two setbacks, and especially the conference loss, switches the
Danes once assured SUNYAC playoff spot to a
precarious wailing game. TPotsdam remains undefeated
in the conference, Albany has two losses, and Piatt-sburgh three. Two of those teams will represent the
Eastern Division of the SUNYAC in the conference
playoffs, and the Danes travel to Plattsburgh for their
final game of the season.
Last night, Hartwick was led by
6-7 center Don McAllister's 21
points (on It) for 10 shooting, moslly on lay-ins around, Ihe basket) and
forward Jerry Fulmer's 20 points.
McAllister also collected 13 rebounds, as the Warriors enjoyed a
35-27 rebounding edge over
Albany.
Albany trailed by 16 in the first
half, but the comeback started with
John DeLosa's jumper. What
followed was a Pete Stanish drive,
two free throws each by Rob Chine
and Steve Low, and jump shots hy
Chine and Ray Cesare, culling the
Harlwick lead lo 26-22.
d u n e ' s second half jumper gave"
Ihe Danes their first lead of ihe
game, 41-40, bin the Warriors then
showed why Ihey own a 15-3
record, including a 22 point victory
over powerful Potsdam. A jumper
by guard Tim O'Brien (subbing for
injured slarler Larry Carpenter)
and two McAllister baskels gave
Harlwick a 46-43 advantage wilh
10:44 left, and Ihe Danes could not
regain the lead. Clime's jump shot
narrowed the Dane deficit lo 52-51,
but McAllister and Fulmer quickly
scored, and die Albany comeback
was successfully stilled.
"This sure was a good win for
us," said Harlwick coach Nick
l.ambros. "We had some problems
wilh Albany's press because wc
were forced lo use a freshman
(O'Brien) in place of Carpenter.
Then Ihey made a run al us, Ihe
crowd gol inlo it, and our guys gol
nervous, 1 liked Ihe big lead, bul I
knew Ihey would make a run, I
think the key was our offense in Ihe
second half. Albany was playing us
so aggressively, lhal our guys were
jus! grabbing lite ball and throwing
il. In the second half we gol it in
side. But lhal was the besi Albany
has ever attacked our 1-3-1 7oue."
Sinuish led Ihe Danes wilh 13
poinls (on six-for-cighl shooiing)
and Kelvin Jones and Chine added
ten points each.
"Thai was one of ihe best games
Chine has played," Sauers said.
"And Pole (Stanish) came on and
provided a spark for us. I ilioughl
we attacked their zone well -- after
we got il going."
Gelling il going wasn't Ihe
Dane's major problem - il was
continuing lo keep il going. Bul
against a team oi Harlwick's caliber
Albany simply could noi make their
comeback stick.
On Tuesday nighl, the Danes
entered Oneonia's Red Dragon
Gym, where Albany had not won
sinee 1971. This lime, Ihe Danes
thought, things would definitely be
different. The Dragons were 3-11,
0-5 in the SUNYAC — wilh one of
those conference losses a 32-point
drubbing by Albany earlier in the
season. And when the Danes raced
to a 22-6 lead in the first half, no
one seemed extremely suprised.
But this was Oneonla, and
strange things happen lo Ihe Danes
in the Dragon's small, poorly lit
gym. Lasl year, it was an unexplainablc series of' missed free
throws lhal plagued Albany in Ihcir
Iwo-poinl loss, On Tuesday, it was
simply everything. The Danes
managed lo come away empty on
Iwo separate 2-on-0 fast breaks.
Usually a poor shooiing leant,
Oneonta bombed from beyond the
Albany zone, and hit on 57 percent
of their attempts, Even a Dane advantage turned around to haunt
them. Derrick Black, llie Dragon's
speedy playmaking guard, picked

C H I C A G O (AP) Chicago's 473,000 public school students

aftec-members of the striking Chicago Teachers Union
overwhelmingly approved a compromise plan to salvage
hundreds of classroom jobs. " W e ' r e happy it ended w e l l , "
union President Robert Healey said Sunday after announcing thai teachers voted 4,645 to 213 in favor o f ending the
walkout. " Y o u could say we compromised for good

ratification vote for Wednesday. Teachers in the nation's
third-largest school district had refused from January 28
until they received overdue paychecks at the end o f the
week. But the following Monday, they- were on slrike,
resisting the Board of Education's plans to eliminate jobs
as part o f a $60 million budget reduction. The board was
supposed to cut school spending as part of an elaborate
rescue plan agreed upon by school, government and
business leaders last'month in-Springfield. The agreement
provided loans for the school system, which could no
longer borrow in the money markets because its credit
rating had fallen too low. The agreement approved by the
union Sunday restored 300 teacher and 204 teacher aides
and clerk posiiions-the board planned to cul. The board,
had voted lo end 1,675 leaching posiiions and will now end
1,375. The agreement also provided that all 48,600 chool
employees will lose one day in pay bul nine days will be added on lo the school year-to make up for days lost during
the work stoppage, Healey said.

From the opening cut "When I Look In Your

The second cut on the album, "Helpless

again Bromberg Is able to utilize his talented
rhythm section to its fullest.
The final cut on side one, and one of his
biggest hits, "Sharon" gives us Bromberg's blatant antl-femlnlne attitude. When performed
live, this Is one of his finest songs (as the ten

"Sharon" gives us Bromberg's view of a

her:
"Sharon, what do you do to these men you

Richard Gere plays Julian Kay, a goodlooking and suave gentleman of leisure whom
wealthy matrons pay large amounts of money
for chauffeuring,translating and other services.
It's in the other services that Julian really
shines. It seems that Julian can give pleasure
to any woman, but receives little in return.
Julian also has stepped on a number of toes
on his way to the top of Los Angeles' gigolo
circles. So, -he's an easy target. In what I
assume was meant to be the central conflict In
the plot, a brutal and kinky sex murder is laid
on Julian, who though innocent, has no alibi.
The, problem is that this, which should take
up most of Julian's time, seems rather
• peripheral. More time seems taken up by what
should have been a subplot—Julian's falling in
love with the beautiful but unhappy wife of a
senator who's trying to win the Ted Kennedy
look-alike contest. Lauren Mutton, who plays
Mrs. Senator, is a credit lo older women
everywhere, and is, admittedly, far more interesting than the rather run-of-the-mill sex
murder dreamed up. Nonetheless, 1 did feel

My next stop was the Providence JournalBulletin, but first I side-tripped over to
McDonald's down on Fountain Street. What
fountain Ihe decrepid-looklng place was named after I'll never know. Probably the Fountain
of Youth.
The girl gave me a dirty look when I told her
toliold the bacon. Who orders an Egg McMuf(In In the middle of Ihe afternoon, anyway?
There was some kind ol convention going on
and the place was crawling with high school
kids In dresses and jackets, wearing big "Hello,
my name is" tags. Believe me, I've seen a lot
of McDonald's (Clewiston, Chambers Street,
Nonuet), but this was the first In which there
was exactly one seat lelt in Ihe whole place. It
was al a single table, directly across from a
past-thirty youngster with a humongous radio
and an alro lo match. He was reading Ihe
Journal, munching on a Big Mac, and sipping
a beer. Teddy P. and the girls did their thing.
The beer was Ihe local variety, named Narrangansett, after the bay. I guess. As long as
you're downtown. It's hard lo forget Ihe proximity to Marrangansetl Bay, the final resting
place lor the contents ol millions of toilets all
across the liny state. The beer tastes like its
namesake smells.
"Sorry to bother you, man, bul ya know

Jk merlcan Gigolo Is ultimately an unsalls* • fying film, for reasons that shouldn't
have happened. Screenwriter Paul Schrader,
whose screenplays have included Taxi Driver,
Obsession, and ffofflng Thunder, has only
lately gone behind the camera, and has frankly become a good director. Schrader is one of
lapel by naming Baskin-Robbins' 31 flavors.
She was stuck on mandarin chocolate.
crime they could spend Ihe rest o l their lives In
the slammer for, spend a little more time
pleading Innocent or at the very least looking
concerned. Julian just keeps running inlo
Lauren Hutlon and saying " O h baby I missed
y o u " a lot.
Another problem Is the credibility of Julian's
situation. I could, believe it or not, buy the
frame-up angle. But for a gigolo who Is supposedly committed to sleeping wilh any
woman who's rich enough, Julian. Is
remarkable. Not one of his clients looked like a
reject from a leper colony. If one was
guaranteed a luxurious home in an expensive
apartment hotel, a black Mercedes-convertible, and being paid huge sums to sleep with attractive older women, what man wouldn't
lake II up?
It's a pity that American Gigolo Is as bad as
it is. I haven't seen much better photography
than this in any movie, and that combined
with Ferdlnando Scarflolti's excellent production designs, good editing (for Ihe mosl part)
and a dynamic electronic musical score,
makes Ihe film one of Ihe mosl impressive
visual exercises to come out so far in the
young year.
John Bailey's cinematography Is electric.
He uses color as Ihe creative tool It should be,
rather than the Kodak snapshot look television
directors are so fond of. His sharp blues, slashed ivlthbrlght reds, electric, glowing greens
contrasted against orange bring out the neon
vibrancy of L.A. night life. The camera angles
have an originality to them. In one long tracking shot, the camera follows Gere along a
street, as trashcans, signs and people are briefly interposed between the lens and subject In
focus but so quick as to be Indistinct. The effect Is rather like watching trees near a
'highway go by from the window of a speeding
car, It's a whole new way to show the rushed
hustle of city streets.
The acting is good as can be expected from
such a weak script. Gere Is a pro, with Impressive past credits and the promise .of better
to come. He's one to watch. As always,
Lauren Hutton is one of the most beautiful
and classiest ladles in Hollywood. She
deserves better than she gets.
If Paul Schrader can produce another script
like Taxi Driver and combine it with the kind of
excellent direction he shows here, he could
make himself one of the most exciting of
American film-makers. WilhAmerican Gigolo,
he's taken some Interesting situations, but
hasn't given the story a strong central thrust.
He meanders all over the countryside and
after two hours pulls a contrived happy ending
out of his hat and expects the audience lo go
home satisfied. It doesn't work, and I can't
believe that this film will be a hit. It could have
been worse though. The lead was originally

is typically John Ritter except that for some
reason he keeps walking around with his shirt

Maybe his wife thinks he has a great body, but

the end (when the whole movie bogs down in
its own cutesy, sentimental hogwash), and he
becomes excruciatingly bad; the epitome of
bad being the moralistic speech he gives to all
of New York on Captain Avenger Day. This
scene should be put into cold storage until someone can find a cure for It. Anne Archer Is a
fine actress as her performance indicates.
She's been doing wonderful work for years.
It's unfortunate that she hasn't been able to
find a project worthy of her. liowever, If this
film becomes a hit, as I'm afraid It might, she
might finally start getting some good offers.
Bert Convy's villain Is pure comic book. I wish
someone would find out just what his supposed calling is'so that he can concentrate on being bad In only one area as opposed to the
three or four he haunts now. Except for Jane
Hallaren as a T V reporter, the rest of the cast,
the script by A . J . Carolhers, and Martin
Davidson'sdlrectlon all merely serve their purpose — no~more, no less. I think this is supposed to be one of those entertaining, "feel

But Seriously...
An all-out nuclear war between
ihe United States and the Soviet
Union initially would kill about 250
million people — or slightly more
than half o f the combined populations o f both countries.
What's more, tens o f millions o f
additional casualties would occur
during the ensuing years, caused by
radialion from Ihe original allack,
and starvation and disease following ihe collapse o f Ihe two nation's
social structures,
The study says that while an all-out
war would probably kill more
Americans than Soviets because
more U.S. citizens live in big cities,
Ihe Soviet economy would suffer
more long-lerm damage because it
is smaller and less efficient.

Whose War Are We Being
Prepared For?
T o m Trabka
By announcing the reinslatement of
registration for the draft and a five year, five
percent annual increase in military spending,
Carter is taking the first steps in preparing
the American people for war. W i t h the
jingoism and general war hysteria it whipped
up over the crisis in Iran, the Administration
is using the Soviet invasion o f Afghanistan to
convince American youth they should
become cannon fodder in a war to protect
what it calls our " v i t a l interests" in the Persian Gulf.
15 billion dollar annual increase for conventional destructive power; senseless additions
to our already massive nuclear arsenal; and
400 million in aid to the military dictatorship
in Pakistan, which is attempting to develop
it's own nuclear warhead with U.S.-bought
technology.
But (he main victims o f Carter's new cold
war policy will be American workers and
farmers, who will suffer in the loss of vital
social services squeezed out o f the budget by
increased military spending, and possibly pay
as well with the lives o f their sons and
daughters. In short, a military adventure in
the Persian O i l f would not be in the Interests

which stand lo profit by it.

Playing "God"
Here it is, my senior year at S U N V A , and
I'm still hearing people say (with a bit o f awe
and surprise), " S o , you're still a Bio m a j o r ? "
It was a long, difficult trek to make, and i f I
had it all to d o over, I'd do it very differently,
but 1 survived.
I've already been accepted at a few
graduate schools, and I am, like many others
applying " o n l y "
to graduate schools,
relatively " l o w - k e y " aboul the situation. Try
saying " H o w ya d o i n g ? " lo a pre-med and
see the answer you get. It will probably be
something like, " I have an interview at
Albert Einslein next week and a hold at
Downstatc, e t c . " Listen lo a conversation In
a biology class o f seniors — you're more than
likely lo hear someone yell across the room,
(in full ear-shot), aboul an Interview they
have. How many limes have you heard,
" Y o u ' r e doing research, well I'm doing community service at Albany Med. I was in line at
6 a.m. to sign up for i t . " So, who's impressed? •
Becoming a doctor is a noble achievement,
but the path to it isn't. There are different
reasons for wanting to achieve this goal: lo
relieve suffering, to belter public health, for
the money, prestige, or to " m a k e u p " for

Follett: No Gown
To the Editor:
In the February fifth issue of the ASP
Ihere is a story on the Pollen Bookstore's
refusal to boycott caps' and gowns made by
Cotrell & Leonard. We arc glad to sec the
ASP covering this important issue, hut we
feel that sonic points in the article need
elaboration.
First of all, the cause of the strike by
Cotrell A Leonard employees is much more
serious than what ihe ASP describes as " i h c
company's interference in union activities."
A l t e r a card count revealed that well over a
majority of workers desired a union, Cotrell
,^ I eiiiiiiid began their unfair labor practices,
rhese included threatening union sympathizers with loss ol job. 'claiming that
union supporters would not be hired and
claiming that the company would not engage
in collective bargaining with the union.
Lite reason the workers have nol voted for
comment
lettc
the union in a secret ballot is that such a vote
is not allowed while the workers are on strike.
Since the workers went on strike shortly after
the card count, there was no time for a secret
ballot. Keeping this in m i n d , it is apparent
that the strikers' immediate goal is not the
repair o f the poor facilities; very simply, it is
for the right to unionize. The problem is
serious enough to have kept the workers out
on strike since August 8th, but Follett has not
seen fit to boycott the company. Instead, it
has worked out a compromise in which
Cotrell & Leonard's regalia can still be purchased. A major reason given for such a
compromise
is t h a t
it
would
be
"inappropriate for a public institution to express a view in a private, labor dispute."
S U N Y A , a public institution, does nol purchase the caps and gowns, however. Follett
Bookstore, a private concern, does. Thus,
the charge of inappropriatencss is irrelevant.
Anolher excuse for avoiding a boycott is
that Follett does not wish lo " p r e j u d g e " the
company. Wc would like Foiled lo explain
how a decision nol to boycott Cotrell &
Leonard avoids prejudging the strikers. A
decision for Colrcll & Leonard is a decision
for management over slrikers.
About 50 people have been striking since
August 8. Their offers to rotuni to work have
been accepted, but only with the condition
that only non-union supporters may work.
(About half lite strikers arc non-union supporters.) These people arc asking for our help
on an issue of great Importance lo their lives.
We cannot let rationalizations stand in the
way o f a boycott. Note that the compromise
was worked out without input from those
purchasing Ihc caps and gowns and note thai
the Senior Class Council has declared its support o f the boycott along with Ihc UAS
Board o f Directors. We urge Pollen to institute a complete boycott and sve urge the
student body to support the efforts of the
workers.
Sincerely,
Dave Pologc (457-4723)

What we must be concerned with is i f our nation is in such dire need and emergency at
prcsenl. Washington, while by no means expecting a Soviet surprise social call, is instead
demonstrating thai our country is In a frozen and blinded stale in our attempts at using
diplomatic efforts and American brainery in its Russian dealings. Sacrificing the intellectual
sword, we have opted for a bullet policy. It is an outright contradiclion o f our calm, cool, yet

Brains over bullets over bombs. Have wc learned nothing?
A draft would imply that wc have ruptured any glimmer of hope for a different solution.
Wc must not, and cannot opl for ibis yet. Draft notions have invited a mass paralysis and

Cortland Drops Swimmers, 65-47
The Albany Stale men's swimming (cam was defeated 65-47 by a powerful
Cortland' squad on Saturday at University Pool. (Photo: Karl Chan)
by Bob Bcllafiorc
"They're probably the best team
in the conference."
That's what Albany State men's
swimming coach Ron White said
about the Cortland State men's
swim team that set three University
Pool records, as they came in and
defeated the Bancs, 65-47 in a dualmeet Saturday afternoon. Albany's
record is now 8-3, while Cortland's
is improved to 8-1.
Ace swimmer Tim Walrath was'
Cortland's lop performer, as he clched liis name Into the record books
on three occasions, by swimming a
leg of the winning 800 yard freestyle
relay team (pool record of 7:31.1
minutes), unci taking both (lie 100
yard backstroke (55.97 seconds),
and I he 400 yard individual medley
in 4:23.0 minutes (bolh record
time).
Frank Ileler, not lo he outdone,
was lop swimmer for the Danes as
he took ihc 100 yard butterfly in
55.03 seconds (missing Ihc school
record by 0.4 seconds), and set a
new pool and school record in winning the 100 yard breastroke with a
time of 1:04.35 minutes. "It's a
pretty impressive double at this time
of the year." commented Wjiite on
Hcter's performance.
The other bright spot, according
to White, was the 400 yard medley
relay team of Steve Bonawilz, Joe
Shore* Heter, and Kevin Ahcrn,
which defeated a stacked Cortland
quartet, and also set a pool and
school record, clocking in at
3:45.89 minutes. White figures that
this Albany relay team could
possibly qualify for the Division III
nationals. In all, five pool records
and Iwo Albany State records were
set.
Other winners for Ihc Danes were
Dave Zybala (100 yard freestyle 52.02 seconds) and Dill Derkasch in
ihc three-meter diving event (211.65
total points). Derkasch also placed
second in the onc-nTeler diving,
while Zybala notched the number
iwo spot in ihc 50 yard freestyle
(23.12 seconds).
The 500 yard freestyle saw Ahcrn
come in second to Markwardt of
Cortland, with a time of 5:10.32
minutes, The Dragons took Ihc lop
two spots in the 200 yard freestyle.
Kerry Donovan, who While refers
to as a key to team depth on the
Danes, was third.
"They are very deep," said
White of Cortland. "That's why we
had trouble with them." Pointing
out the fact that, in swimming, it is
easy to discern which team is
superior, White said he just wanted
to keep the Dane swimmers in their
specially events, and tried to create
the best matchups. "You can see (in
swimming) when a team is stronger
than you," noted White. "1 felt
that Cortland was the stronger
team."
Despite the loss of co-captain
Tom Roberts\to illness, While was
as confident as possible of his
squad. "I felt we could still give
them a meet," said While, "ft was
the best meet we've ever had against
litem," he continued.
Albany travels to Binghamton
Saturday for a quadrangular meet
with Stony Brook, Buffalo, and
Binghamton. White calls this the
SUNY University Center Championships and, wilh a full week of
preparation for the meet, says
White, "we hope lo win it,"

The Albany State men's indoor
track team evened iheir record at
three wins and three losses last
Saturday in Burlington, Vermont.
The home Icam, ihc University of
Vermont, took first with 96 points.
Albany placed second with 44
points while Pittsburgh finished
last having gathered only 29 points,
Albany's performance was line in
light of the quality of the Division I
Vermont runners. Their Iwo best,
Dave Leonard and Kevin Williams,
amazed many in the two mile event,
Tile two ran the first mile together
at a fast 4:31 clip, only several
seconds slower than a fine lime for
the mile. Williams knew he
wouldn't be able to keep up with his
teammate, but he hoped that
Albany's Scott James would be
psyched out by Vermont's wide
margin at the mile mark.
Leonard finished undaunted as
he completed the two miles in
9:09.7. Yet James refused to lei I hat
I'irsl mile lead bother him. This race
was an important test lor him,
because lie was unsure if lie could
handle a longer distance and still
maintain a fast pace.
"That was the first time I ever
ran the two mile in competition,"James said. "What really
helped me was Mike Sayers' mature
sense of pace. He knows what he's
doing out there." Sayers led James
to a 4:42 mile and James finished
the last mile in 4:46. That was good
enough for a second place finish in
the two mile at 9:26.7.
The best performance was
demonstrated by sophomore Bruce
Shapiro. Shapiro sel two personal
records in what may be called his
best day ever. He started his
"perfect" day by winning the 1000
yard dash. "I just fell real good. I
was running against my old high
school tcapimatc, Dan Green of
Pittsburgh. Thai gave me an added incentive," Shapiro said.
Shapiro hadn't noticed he was
running at a record pace unlit the
last 70 yards were left. There he saw
the chance'lo pass Iwo runners. He
oulkickcd two opponents to win the
1000 dash in a record breaking
time of 2:17.0. This was seven
seconds belter than his previous
best time / o r the 1000 yard dash.
Shapiro was not lo be outdone in
the mile race. He showed a lot of
guts by pacing himself with cocaptain Bill Mathis. They finished
three quarters together at 65
seconds apiece. Shapiro bettered his
pace during the last quarter to 64
seconds. This enabled him to finisli
second, four-tenths of a second
behind Williams, the winner, wilh a
time of 4:18.9. This bcllered his
previous best time by 12 seconds.
Mathis was right behind Shapiro's
time of 4:19,3 with a time of 4:20.8,
Two freshman, Mitchell Harvard
and Curl Denton, have helped contribute to tltetcani. Harvard consistently gathers valuable points lor
Albany, and he placed second in the
50 meter high hurdles at 7.3
seconds. He also placed fourth in
the 440 yard dash in a lime of 54.1
seconds.
"I guess it's the enthusiasm I
have since I'm a freshman," said
Harvard. "I'm just so psyched being here in college thai I'm pulling
all my efforts out."
The oilier surprise has been the
performance of Denton. He placed
lor Albany in both the 440 and 50
yard dashes, ye| he feels he can still
improve. "1 wailed back too long,"
affirmed Denton. "My second
place lime of 53.2 seconds in the
440 is nowhere near my potential,"
Demon made a believer out of
some as he earned points Iwo events
later. He contributed a fourth place
5.74 in Ihc 50 yard dash. He said,
"This is not my event, but, I was
sure glad to be able lo help the
team."
Another consistent performer has
been Tim Gunther. He placed
fmirth in the triple jump at 39'10 inches. His long jump of 19*10 and
one-half inches broke his personal
record. Bui he thinks there is still
much room for improvement. "I'm
-o close to 20 feet that I know I can
orcak Ihat barrier. Yet my goal is a
little more difficult. 1 want lo break
20 feet, 6 inches," said Gunther.
Sonic other fine showings were
made by Bill Condon, who finished
lliird in the triple jump at 40'2",
Howard Williams, who finished second in Ihc 50 yard dash at 5.6
seconds, Tony Ferrettl, who finished second in the 600 yard dash al a
lime of 1:15.7 and Mathis, who
won ihc half mile at a lime of
1:58.7.
Point Record Broken By
Gymnasts In Triple Meet
by liori Cohen
" M u c h Improvement", ihe
Brockport gymnastics coach told
Albany coach Pat Duvall-Spillanc,
and the score showed it. Albany's
goal was to break 100 points, and
Saturday against Cauisius and
Brockport at University Gym, they
achieved Iheir goal and much more.
They broke Ihc existing school
record of 109,1 points, gaining
109.5 points. Canisius won I lie meet
with 113.2 points, while-Brockport
finished a close third with 108.75
points.
Albany captain Kalhy Cheniolli,
t
who has not participated this season
because of a dislocated elbow, commented on the point total: "This
is our highest point total this
season. We were aiming to break
100 and we reully did it."
The Albuny women were much
improved and were complemented
on Iheir improvement by both of
the other coaches. The women's
scores were consistently in the five's
and six's and seven's, with some
eight's slipping in. The bars proved
to be Albany's best event witli Bar-
bara Jean Shaw placing second and
Elaine Cllvnn third, with a 7.35 and
a 7.1, respectively.
Al the half, after the vaulting and
uneven parallel bars were finished,
Albany led 55.6 lo 54.4 over
Canisius and 52.45 over Brockport,
Several women had excellent, days
for Albany. Glynn finished second
in the all-around competition with a
7.9 in vatilling, 7.1 on the bars, 7.7
on the beam, and an outstanding
8.3 on the floor. Tcrri Michos also
had a fine day, finishing fourth in
the all-around competition with a
7.6, 6,00, 6.55, and 7.45. Debbie
Schocher also fiad one of her best
days on the beam witli a 6.3 and in
the vaulting with a 7.5.
Carlene Feraco of Brockport,
who is ranked 10th nationally in
Division III, finished third in the
overall with a score of 29.55, while
K. Rcnzi of Canisius finished first
in the all- around competition with
score or 31.80.
The women are reaching their
peak and will hopefully hit it at the
state meet on March 1 at Hofstra.

Danes Prove Too Deep For Union, 8 5 - 7 0
by Ppul Schwartz
"The bench" is a term not
popular with many basketball
players, but as the Dane's season
wears on, that specific group is
becoming more and more important. On Saturday, Albany's
starters were oulscorcd by Union's
first five, 61-51, but as has been the
case the entire season, the Dane's
reserve corps more than made up
the difference. The five-man unit
hit 70 percent of their shots,
outscored Union's bench 34-9, and
provided the impetus for Albany's
85-70 victory at University Gym.
Super-sub Pete Stnnish again ignited the Dane offense, finishing
with a team-high 16 points (II in
ihc second half) on six-l'or-scvcn
from die field and four of six free
throws, helping Albany shool 5H
percent for the contest, and improve their record to 16-4.
"Tlicy were just too deep," said
Union basketball coach Mill
Staiilon. "We dug a hole/ for
ourselves early - our defense was
incredibly poor in the first half. But
in die first 15 minutes of (he second
half I think we outplayed them. We
gol their lead down with 8-10
minutes to go, and that's where we
should have made a run. But we gol
lircd, and losi our composure -- wc
look some shots loo early. Albany'sdepth is very good, and wc just
don't have the depth. I think that
was really critical."
Nine Albany players scored six or
more points in a balanced attack,
while the Dutchmen (8-8) relied
chiefly 'on ilieir high-scoring
backcourt duo of Joe Cardany and
Joe Clinton. Firing from long
range, Clinton hit for 22 points and
Cardany 15, but both were harrasscd into p. or shooting performances
(Cardany 5-18, Clinton 7-16).
Three jumpers by Wiiision Royal

and after the'Senior guard assisted

Albany held a 17-10 lead- Boih were
playing in llicir final home game,
and Royal came through with a 15

totaled nine points and a. Dane
season-high 12 rebounds.

by John Moiuanile, Clinton, and
John Kruin forced the Danes into a

six points, bin seven slraighl
Albany points put Ihc game away.
Ray Ccsare hit a side jump shot,
Stnnish scored on a lip in, Joe Jcdnak put in a jumper, and Royal's
free Ihrow boosted ihc Danes advantage lo 76-62 with 1:53 remaining.
"We were really up for this
game,"said Jones. "This was the
first lime in three years that wc lost

"This was an important win,"
stated Sauers. "We needed Ibis

The preparation is for the Danes'
lasl three games of Ihc regular
season — all on the road. Tomorrow
night Albany faces Division II

then face a showdown*with the two
SUNYAC learns thai surround

undefeated in the conference. On
February 20lh it will be AlbanyPlatlsburgh, in what could very
possibly be the deciding contest for
the SUNYAC playoffs, probably lo
be held in Buffalo. The Danes have
two conference losses and P i t t sburgh has three (one being a 70-56

likelihood, even with their fine
record, Ihc Danes' fate will slill be
undecided until their final game of

capital district opponent RPI.
The defcal by Western- New
England was another in a long line
of forfeit-marred efforts for llie
Albany Grapplers, as they forfeited
al 126 and heavyweight and lost Ihc
match by 12 team points. Fine individual performances were lurried
in by several wrestlers. Mark Dailey
was victorious al 142, and Sieve
Cronin won his match al 167 with a
two point n: -vc in the lasl few
seconds. Paul Mornbach and Vic
Herman both won by a pin in Ilieir
matches lo narrow the margin to
six, inn ihc Forfeit at heavyweight
kept the match oul of reach.
The team concluded its season
with a convincing 32-18 win over
RPI. Albany Slate wrestling coach
Joe DcMco was very pleased witli
this effort againsi what he called "a
much improved RPI learn." The
match was highlighted by four
Albany pin victories as Rob
Spagnoli ai 134) and Cronin at 167,
Uornhach at 177, ami Herman a!
190 all pinned Ilieir opponents, In
addition, Dailey at 142 and Dave
Siraubai 158 both out-pointed their
opponents io round out Ihc Albany
scoring.
The victories by Hornbach gave
him an undefeated dual meet record
of 18-0-1. Such credentials should
make him a lop seed in the upcoming SUNYAC championships in
Buffalo, DcMco expects the team lo
do very well in Hie SUNYAC's and
is counting on qualifying several
wrestlers fur the NCAA .National
Championships.
Of the season, which ended with
ihc Danes showing a 9-10 record,
DcMco said, "ll was it season filled
willi opportunities that slipped by."
Albany wreslled a lough schedule
this year, and their efforts were
consistently hampered by Forfeits
and injuries. Bui the quality of
competition faced by Albany on a
weekly basis this season will be of
great benefit lo llie wrestlers as they
prepare for the post-season tournaments.
With some luck, and a lot of hard
work, Albany could do very well in
these tournaments, perhaps having

scene at one or more SUNY campuses as a result of Governor Hugh
Carey's 1980-81 Executive Budget
recommendations. Addressing a
joint session of Ihc Senate Finance
and Assembly Ways and Means
Committee, Wharton warned that
legislative approval of Carey's proposed $34.2 million cm in SUNY
funding levels will result ir.
"far-reaching consequences" lo
New York Siaic's system of higher
education.
Wharton claims that these consequences may range from the closing
of campuses lo the elimination of
academic programs and as many as
2200 faculty and staff throughout
SUNY. He also noted lliat cam-:
puses may be forced lo limit
enrollments.
If proposed budget reductions
are distributed among SUNY campuses on a pro rata basis, SUNYA
may lace the loss of 130 positions,
according lo SUNYA Vice President for Finance and Business John
llariigan. Approximately 20
SUNYA faculty members would be
included in this figure, he said.
However, both Flariigau and
SUNYA Community Relations
Cutbacks
Director Phillip Johnson agree ihal
such a distribution scheme would
by no means be certain of establishment, should Carey's proposal take
effect.
"I think it is fairly clear thai the
burden is going lo be on the back of
SUNY lo come up with a plan lo
address Ihc needs of the eighties in
terms of the University," said
Johnson.
Wharton explained to legislators
Ihal Carey's plan for funding
SUNY docs nol lake into account
the effects of budget .reductions
levelled on the system each year
since 1975.
"Now the culs arc even worse,"
observed SASU Organizing Director Bruce Cronin. "Before iliose
cuts, SUNY was at its bare bones.
Now willi lliis new cm, it's going lo
change SUNY's mission entirely.'1
Wharion also criticized the executive proposal for requiring ihal
Ihc fiscal cutbacks be completed
"in a time frame Ihal makes ilicm
impossible for us ui implement
without serious and far-reaching
dislocations."
flic immediacy, of ihc proposal
would leave SUNY without sufficient time lo phase oul positions or
lake advantage of the effects of ;uIrllion. The sole option available
would be what Wharton refers lo as
the "permanent layoff" of faculty
and staff.
"it's a fail accompli. You've just
gol no money and yoU'vejust got io
hack," said Johnson. "It's the difference between butchery and
surgery. Do you wain to go in there
with a meat cleaver or a scalpel?
This is certainly the meal cleaver."
The major components of the
proposed $34.2 million budget
reduction arc a $12.3 million base
reduction and a $14 million cm,
labelled a "rc-examlnntlon incentive." The ambiguity of this phrase
has led many to question the validity of the $14 million reduction,

Newmark was one of 300 college
student government presidents
from across the nation, who were
invited to the White House on
February 15. They met with lop
government officials lo discuss major current issues.
However, from Newinark's
political point of view, Ihc gatheriug was a ''deliberate attempt io

things."
"1 think ihc meeting was slapped
together two weeks ago," Newmark
said. When students asked when ihc
gathering was planned, conflicting
responses were offered by officials.
One said Ihc meeting was planned
in October, another said in

Ihc meeting was planned in

Newmark added Ihal Carter, who

it is written. It is not a well-designed
cul. It was done crudely."
"What they do is tell you that
you've got lo act, not encourage
you to re-examine," said Johnson.
"If you have 14 million less dollars,
you can't spend a lot of it in careful
re-evaluation. You've gol lo cut
right away."
Whether proposed cutbacks
would affect SUNY campuses as
severely as Wharion suggests remains a mailer for debate. O'Lcary
believes thai Wharton's campus
shutdown warnings are probably
lillle more llian threats. He backs
up Ibis assertion by citing potential
problems witli investors holding
shares of capital construction bonds
for the various campuses.
Johnson, on the other hand,
views Wbarlon's claims as very real
possibilities, "inevitably, the
answer conies down lo eliminating a
campus or Iwn campuses," he said.
In Johnson's opinion, SUC-Ncw
Pah/ and SUC-Fredonia may be llie
first lo go. A shutdown of SUC-
Fredonia might be justified on the
basis of the number of larger SUNY
campuses crowded into its region of.
the state, he said. He cited the existence of a University Center, four
Colleges of Arts and Science, and
numerous community colleges, all
west of Rochester. The entire area
has a population approximately
equal lo that of Long Island, he
said.
Cronin, however, sees SUCBrockport as a possible first target
for shutdown.
"I'd think New Paltz because
New Paltz. is considered a weak,
campus," he said. "But you have lo
look al Brockporl, because they
had a 700 enrollment dropl In the
area where Brockporl is, you also
have (SUC) Genesee, (SUNY
Agricultural and Technical College
al) Alfred, ihc two Buffalo Colleges,
and Fredonia lo llie south. If one of
llie considerations were regional.
Mien the fuel ihal I here arc other
campuses in llie area would be impurlunl."
According to Johnson, the relaliouship of a campus to the community in which il is located will
also conic into play if SUNY inusi
choose a campus to close.
"'Flic campus is the principal
reason that these towns exist," he
said. "There's a real economic impact", a personal impact. It's no
longer an educational question. It's
a political and economic question.'.1
Johnson nolcd that the loss of a
western New York campus would
cause a great loss of jobs in an area
already struck by the exodus of the
steel industry. "Besides, it's nol a
heavy industry," he said. "It's not
a polluter."
Why has it become necessary lo
suggest that any campus close,
when SUNY budgets have already
been cut five years in a row? For at
least part of the answer, many turn
to the new Stony Brook Hospital,
c o n s t r u c t e d , e q u i p p e d , and
