VOL.L. NO.5
FASANO
The State University Theatre will conduct auditions
for i t s fourth and final production of the season,
Raft of the Medusa, on March 10 and 11 in the Studio
Theatre (R 291) at 7:30 p.m. There will also be an
afternoon audition on March 11 at 1:30 p.m. Those
involved in the State University Revue whose r e h e a r sal schedule conflicts with evening auditions a r e
encouraged to attend the afternoon audition.
The cast will include fourteen c h a r a c t e r s ; six boys
and six girls between the ages of nine and twelve,
and one younger child. Only one of the fourteen
will be portraying an adult. The age of these c h a r a c t e r s
will provide a unique opportunity and stimulating
challenge for the students of the University.
The play, by the controversial German playwright
George Kaiser, concerns a group of children marooned
for seven days on a small rrft. The play, a s e a r i n g
comment on Christianity and the human condition, is
a stimulating experience for the technicians a s well
a s the a c t o r s because of the universal requirements of
the production.
Mr. J a m e s Leonard, who is directing the play,
is most anxious to have a large number of students
audition. In case a student should wish to become
more familiar with the play and the roles that a r e
to be filled, he has put copies of the play on r e s e r v e
in the library under his name.
He e m p h a s i z e s the fact that no previous acting
experience is necessary. T h e r e is also a great need
for people who a r e interested in technical work.
The staff hopes that through this production many
new p e r s o n s will be incorporated into the dramatic
activities of the University.

Publications Committee Meets in Ignorance
There is a group of faculty m e m b e r s
currently meeting in s e c r e t conclave on
this campus which will determine the
fate or publications at this University,
Like so many of its fellow committees,
this group was called into existence by
the administration several months ago to
evaluate, re-evaluate, and re-evaluate
the re-evaluation of the place and role
of publications at State.
It is expected to make some general
recommendations of University policy in
regards to publications to President Collins sometime within the next few months,
Just how specific these " g e n e r a l " r o c ommendations will turn out to be is
frankly of some concern to us. We have
seen samplings of other general s t a t e ments of policy (for example the rulings
on fraternities and sororities) and to tell
the truth, they always struck us as being
a trifle on the specific side.

" R u s s i a is very m i s i n t e r p r e t e d , " said Madame Catherine AA'olkonsky, the new chairman of the Russian department atAlbany. "When we teach Russian language
we should teach not only the language, but we should
also teach the c u l t u r e , " she went on. To this purpose
she has dedicated a life marked by danger and distinguished by scholarship on
two continents.

the voting polls.
Voting on the tuition bills usually follows party
lines. Although all voting in the Assembly committees
is s e c r e t , it can be assumed that all the Republicans
were against the issue of free tuition.
The most effective weapon that can be used by Stale
students against this undesirable legislation, is a vole
against the Assemblymen involved at the next election.
For those students who are not eligible to vole, much
can be done by influencing parents, and friends.
The Republicans on this committee, and their r e spective districts are as follows: Fred W. P r e l l e r ,
Queens-9; Paul L. Talbot, Otsego; Leo \ . Lawrence,
Herkimer; J e r r y \V. Black, Schuyler; -John l\. Johnson, Genesee; Paul B. Hanks, J r . , \lonroo-3; Willis
H. Stephens, Putnam; Orin S. Wilcox, .Jefferson; llvman K. Mintz, Sullivan; Kenneth 1 . Wilson, Plsler;
Philip R. Chase, Onondaga-3; P. Boiee Kssor, Westc h e s t e r - 2 ; and Kdwin I'. Fehrenbaeh, Nassau-1.
Only by attempting to vote these men out of oilier
can any effective complaint be lodged against the issue
of tuition.

Dr. David Hartley, Dean of Students,
promised Patrick C e r r a , ex-president of
Student Association, thatone student would
be included on the committee.
Also, Dr. Evan R. Collins, President of
the University, said to William Colgan,
Editor-in-Chief of the ASP several months
ago, that he thought some students should
be included on the committee,
Still, however, the committee is as
devoid of students as a faculty tea. We
would like to know the reason why
We a r e astonished by this policy ol
excluding students from a committee dosigned to evaluate student publications,
The faculty members who comprise the
committee know absolutely nothing about
the internal functioning and unique problems faced by the individual publications
on this campus.
The publications have been student o r ganized nw\ run since their beginnings.

" I t was during these m o r t a r duels that
things got h a i r y , " Jack continued. "A 4.2
m o r t a r sounds like a freight train coming
down on top of you."
Lighting another cigarette, Jack went on
to say that three men in his team were killed
in Laos. The team leader, Captain Moon,
and Sergeants Rischoff and Biber.
They
were killed in a village overrun by the
Pathet Lao.
The full details were never known but
apparently Captain .Moon was killed during
tht1 attack. Biber and Bischoff were apparently wounded and later bayoneted because
they were not able to march.

" T h e r e were opportunities to make many
jumps and attack Pallid Lao units but we
couldn't talk the Royal I.ao troops into doing
it." Jack continued.
" T h e s e people are
apathetic. There is a parallel to this situation in Viet Nam."
Jack wont on by saving that the apathy
comes from the tact that these people don't
want to lose face. Because there is a chance
of losing, there is a marked reluctance to
fight.

Jack Savage, now a State sophomore, spent
a year with the Army Special F o r c e s in Laos.
Jack also spent several months in South Viet
Nam when the Diem regime was in control.
"Another big problem with the Lao troops
was that they didn't consider that they were
in the a r m y , " Jack went on. "They felt that
they were only work for the army. The
standard of living is so low that the Lao could
make more money in the army than any when

Stopping to take another sip of coffee Jack
continued by saying that Cong Lee seemed
like he wanted to do the right thing but didn't
know how to do it. Eventually he was forced
into joining the Pathet Lao. After the coup
failed, the only sanctuary was the Pathet Lao.
Cong did initiate some movement against
Royal troops, but the attempt was halfhearted.
Cong seemed unsure that he was doing the
right thing. At times, he was fightingagainst
both sides. Cong Lee commanded the elite
troops (airborne).
They were pretty good
fighters in comparison to the other Lao
t roops.

HAMMING
IT UP
by Ron Hamilton
We have recently been bombarded by several angry
AMIA team members as to the handling of their protests by the AMIA Board. Their complaints seem just,
as far as vve can determine. It is not good policy to
sustain a protest and then reverse the decision. It is
true that decisions are reversed in certain c a s e s , but
the body that reverses the decision is not the one that
made the original one.
When a protest is made it should receive due consideration and all the facts should be presented. The
decision should come as a result of weighing all the
facts and therefore reversals by the same body should
be impossible.
Protests are almost never upheld and rightly so because they are usually made over any little incident
that happens, but this should not mean that all protests
are trivial. In this case a decision was reached. II
should have stood. We hope thai the AMIA hoard does
not think it has a tradition of disallowing protests to
follow.
Three cheers for the frosh joining the new conference. It will give the team something to aim lor each
season. The publicity that is given to the conference
by the area papers will also bo welcomed by the freshman team. We, of the Sports Department think this
move will improve the interest and caliber of frosh
basketball al Stale.
The basketball season 63-fi-l is now (dosed. It brings
several thoughts to mind. First, the ohee rlendim.;
situation is something that should be worked out by
next year, so we do not have a repeat of this v e a r ' s
atrocity. Second, what will the Armory look like when
500 students will be " c o m m u t i n g . "
Last, we hope thai it would not ruinanyono's amatoui
status by giving the athletes a free I iekel to the Mhlel i •
Awards Banquet. It is time we stopped being so cheap.
