A: n.li Undergraduate life at Oxford university is much different from that at American universities, Mr. Arthur Moore, from the University of Georgia and a former Rhodes scholar stated in the 11:10 assembly on Friday. In the college boarding bouses, each student is attended by a "scout" who looks after all of the student's needs and aids him in entertaining his guests at tea or other meals. The typical "scout" is "well past middle age, wears an impressive mustache and sideburns, and has asthma." Fach student has two or three rooms. The living room is the one in which he entertains his friends, eats Mime of his meals and studies there. Oxford stresses the practice of entertaining one's friends at tea. In this way, students become more intimate and have an opportunity to discuss topics of vital importance. Mr. Moore described the meaning of the word tea in Knglaud as tea which is brewed droug enough to etch zinc. Athletics play an important part in the life at Oxford. Karh student participates in some .spurt. No student .pectators are seen at the contests, •bowing the lark of commercialism in this phase of life. Kuglish football is plaicd much diffcrcntlv than \ineriean football. Mr. Moore said, lie Unites a statement made by an F.ugli-hiuau describing the American name : "It i- a game played in a most ex irai.rilniarx wa\. \ lellow hacks oil to the back field. I le then shouts tele plume number-. \\ hen the fellow holding the ball g i t - tired adding up the numbers he lire* Hie ball, 15v -nine amazing process they decide who's to kill who; then they dive at each other. Americans are vicious but they don't like to get hurt, so they pay themselves with feather beds. When some of the players die they send in more recruits from the sidelines. When both teams are exhausted they leave the held." Mr. Moore demonstrated the costume worn by Oxford students in classes, lie explained that no degrees are conferred upon .students until all bills are pai I. Tradesmen will walk up and down the aisles at Commencement an I pluck out students whose bills are unpaid. Mr. Moore further discussed Oxford at a meeting in the Lounge of Richardson hall, Friday afternoon. At this time be explained the Kuglish system of debates. The speakers appear in full even ng dress, not tuxedos. After the speakers are finished there is discussion from the Hour. \'o decision is made by judges. The audience does the judging. Those who favor the negative leave the room by the front door, those for the affirmative have by the side door. Reporters record the results of each and announce them la'er ill the coffee room. They have an interest in their own team after all I They showed that they were ready to back not merely a winning team, but one which beats colleges of high calibre and reputation. And Hamilton defeated I lobar! in its first game of the season lo the tune of 45-1.1. Yet the assertion has been made by those higher up that the varsity would be incapabk of playing and unwilling lo meet more than one major opponent pel season, O n c e again we hear the old critic'.sms t h a t follow a major contest cr.t.cisms pertaining to coaching from the bench and allowing men of t h r e e or more y e a r s ' college experience to participate in vars.ty g a m e s . W e thought that petty difficulties were ironed out by the alumni last year. L a s t year the attack concerned the colleges of minor reputation whom fstate meets. .A file of refusals from leading eastern colleges for g a m e s on the State schedules testifies to State's willingness to m e e t such institut.ons. But these colleges have n o t h i n g to gain and everything to lose if they play us, hence they refuse offers. And now the vein of attack shifts to another petty issue. T h e sain.- inability that ha- prevented the varsity irinn running up higher scores in its tir-1 games a Ibe season, namclv that of being unable to s,nk easy dribble-in -hols, characterized the team's plav in the first half >>\ the game. F.Videnlh the players were saving lhi.se b a s k i l s for the third-iptarter nml i<i Hamilton. R a y H a r r i s appeared to be the player necessary to smooth out State's passing g a m e . Ray also played a fine g a m e on defense, giving O r c u t t a hard fight on every tap, and effectively checking his man. I lon'l be surprised if y on see the varsity men playing more roughly than Usual tomorrow night, nor if you hear the opposing players guying each other and criticizing their o p p o n e n t s ' style of play. Such tactics are characteristic of \liiiimi games. "Big B e n " I n g r a h a m has returned to action once more.
