Are We Proud of This ?
Hidden in one of the darker corners of this university
is a cafeteria. We realize that we are using the word
"cafeteria" very loosely, but we do believe it is somewhat accurate.
The condition of the cafeteria is one of the most
amazing things in this institution.
The floors are almost always filthy; the food is far
from exceptional; the coffee is far from average; and
the crowding is close to complete.
In addition, it is very doubtful that any major effort
has been made to exterminate the rodents which inhabit
the Husted Cafeteria walls. These are not white mice.
The cafeteria is very rarely kept open for the full
number of hours stipulated in the contract which, in
theory, controls its operation.
There are no napkin dispensers in two of the four
non-faculty rooms. Two of the three dispensers in the
"well equipped" are empty by 1:00.
In two of the rooms, the tables are placed too close
together.
In the other two, there are round tables
and desks. Both of the latter types are very inefficient.
The most wasted space is in the "Cave" because of
the round tables and the individual accomodations.
Another big problem is the absence of a ventilating
system. Certainly something could be done. We suggest
that a hammer be purchased. This is the ideal tool
for the job. It can be used to open all the windows
about a half-inch; if the windows have grown permanently
closed since the last ventilation period (back in the
early 1930's), it can be used to break each window in
either a left corner or a right corner according to the
political leanings of the maintenance engineer who
performs the tasks.
There are also complaints about the menu. One never
knows what kind of jelly will accompany his peanutbutter. One never knows whether or not he will be able
to see his egg salad or his tuna salad hidden beneath the
generous serving of lettuce.
All in all, we suggest that such News advertisers as
The Mayflower, the College Sub House, the Union, and
occasionally Walt's be patronized. In addition there are
many other places around Albany such as the Boulevard, the Waldorf, the College Restaurant, Joe's, Vinnie's, Mike's, the Quail Street Restaurant, and Woolworth's.
The ideal time to try all these places,
especially the subscribers, is this coming Monday.
J.W.G.
Let's Have a Fire
There is no fire evacuation plan in this college.
There is no excuse for this situation as it stands today.
There is no excuse for the situation to continue after
this coming Monday.
We had a nice little fire earlier this week. It showed
that none of the staircaseshave adequate smoke control.
It showed that there is no way to stop a fire which intends to travel through the lower level of the college.
Except for the fact that this college is owned by the
State, there is every reason to believe that the Albany
city fathers would be annoyed with our situation, if
their fire laws are as strict as we hope they are.
There should be plans for fire evacuation from the
main college buildings and every annex. This should
have been made years ago.

Unknowns Hold Game Lead
In A M IA Bowling League Race
Last week we mentioned the
possibility of KB being upset just
as Potter had been the previous
week. This week that "possibility"
became a reality, as the up and
coming Goobers trounced the KB
men 5-2.
Leading the Goobers to victory
was Mert Sutherland who bowled
an outstanding 586 series. Mert
pounded the maples for games of
191, 214, and 181. Whenever the
team needed the big strike Mert
was there. Also a big factor in
the Goober victory was the steady
bowling of Jim Gittleman. Jim
pounded out a 512 series.
In another match the amazing
Unknowns continued on their ways
by b e a t i n g Newman Club 7-0.
Leading the Unknowns to victory
was the e q u a l l y amazing Phil
Thomas.
Phil bowled a fine 582 series on
games of 158, 212, and 212. Phil
has been on a hot streak of late.
In the last three weeks he has hit
series of 583, 583, and582. That's
an average of 194!
Last year Thomas averaged between 155 and 160. But this year
his average hasshotuptol80plus!
In the other matches Potter
knocked off Waterbury 4-3 as Gary
Penfield bowled an outstanding 233
in his first game, The Sophs beat
TXO 5-2.
Gary Penfield led all bowlers in
the single department with his 233.
In that game Penfield had his first
five in a row, and later in the
game he had a double. Other high
singles were hit by Sutherland 214,
Thomas's pair of 212's, Wayne Van
Pelt, 199, and Gittleman, 194.
Mert Sutherland led all bowlers
in the triple department with his
fine 586 series. Close to Mert
was Thomas with his 582, followed
by Van Pelt, 546, Penfield, 532,
Don Hale, 518, Don Fear, 515, and
Gittleman, 512.
As far as the teams are concerned the Unknowns are sitting
in first place, one game ahead of
KB. The Unknowns look like the
best team in the league.

Spinning the
S p o r t s Wheel <
by Bill Colgan
The man takes the pass, fakes left, and cuts right.
Going full blast, he receives an elbow in the ribs, and
then a hand reaches for his arm . . .
Wow! Another exciting gainer by Alex Webster, good
for the first down. Well, not quite. The above misadventure is merely a typical scene in any AMIA basketball game. The current intramural hoop season began
last weekend, but as one battered player has remarked,
"It's just a continuation of AMIA football."
Watching an AMIA basketball game almost beats
watching the Giants crush their opponents into the soft
turf of Yankee Stadium. If you enjoy blood, bruises and
groans, then AMIA basketball is for you. If you like
basketball, then AMIA's version of Mr. Naismith's
invention is definitely not for you.
AMIA basketball has already degenerated (if it's possible to degenerate in the space of two days) into what
amounts to a free-for-all, with a basketball thrown
in for good measure. The players battle each other with
gusto, paying little attention to the rules of this "noncontact" sport. Elbows and hands are used with abandon,
and Page Hall hardwood is definitely not Yankee Stadium
turf.
The fault must be placed with the officiating, of
course. But, what officiating? Hardly a peep is heard
out of those nice shiny whistles the referees carry, and
the unwritten code appears to be "Get the Game Over
As Fast As Possible."
Now the basketball season has just begun. If this
carnage continues till the end, there can be only one
result. Somebody's going to get hurt bad! This no one
wants. Steps must be taken by AMIA to improve the
officiating. This AMIA owes to itself.

Last S a t u r d a y witnessed the
opening of an expanded AMIA b a s ketball season. Four leagues will
compete this year instead of the
customary three in the past.
The new league is the result of
the division of the old second
league into the new stronger second
and third leagues, and the dropping
of the old third league into the new
fourth league category.
This action was taken by the
AMIA commissioners J e r r y Blair
and Dick Kimball to achieve an
overall greater balance in the
league.

as they traveled to Pace College and emerged with a 67-44 victory. Combining

For the first eleven minutes of the second half the team's defense held Pace

Home with Brooklyn Poly
The 1962-63 wrestling season gets into full swing
tomorrow afternoon with a match at home, in Page Gym
at 2:00 p.m., against Brooklyn Poly. This is a season
which can be looked forward to with mixed hopes.
Graduation Hurts Team
Albany will certainly feel the lose of four solid point
producers: Ray Bouchard, Clem Crowe, Jay Katzel,
and Tom Ellis, who together combined for an impressive
27-9-1 record last year. Especially hard to replace will
be the one-two punch of Crowe (301 N.Y.S.I.A.C. and
4-1 champion) and Bouchard (115 lb. N.Y.S.I.A.C.
champion).
However, the plus side is also bright for Albany.
Coach Garcia is high on a pair of sophs — Lee Comeau
and dene Monaco — though both are probably another
year away from full potential, even though they have
won starting positions.
The heaviest part of the load, then, must be carried
by Co-Captains John Woytowich (8-2 last year) and
Dick Board (ineligible) and senior Art Brunelle (6-4).
The former are "two of the toughest boys ever to wear
State togs", while Coach Garcia feels Brunelle could
be the best wrestler on the squad.
Also showing promise is Les Keys who should be
ready to start around the second semester; second
semester help should also be coming from Howard
Blum, who will not wrestle until then.

Dick Crossett, playing in his first

debut an auspicious one as he

Senior Co-Captain JimOppedisano

Ray Weeks added 11. On the opposite side of the ledger Rpn

17 points.
The team, which looked a little
rusty at times, will have a chance
to jell this week as they traveled
to Utica on Tuesday. Tonight the
team meets a tough Univ. of Buffalo and tomorrow night encounters
Buffalo State.
The Univ. of Buffalo game should
prove a testing ground for Ped
fortunes this year. They are one of
the biggest schools that Albany has
ever faced and a r e a western New

Should
the squad win this one they could
very easily improve on l a s t y e a r ' s
19-6 record.
Last year the Purple and Gold
defeated Buffalo State in the A r mory quite handily and the team
will be looking for i t s ' second

The first home game for the

The team's biggest problem according to Coach
Garcia will be an old problem-lackofdepth. Last year,
for example, the team was forced to forfeit weights in
three matches; these forfeitures cost the team victories, as the team lost these matches by two, three, and
six points.
This year the team will be able to make all the
weights in the dual meets, but in the conference it will
not |„. able to do so. The niatmen will definitely have
to forfeit the 115 lb. class and will probably have to
forfeit the 191 H). class also.
For the opening match tomorrow the following men
will probably start: 123 lb. Gene Monaco (Soph), 130
lb. I.ee Comeau (.Soph), 137 lb. Ronald Kent (Jr.),
147 lb. Arthur Brunelle (St\), 157 lb. John Woytowich
(Si-.), 167 lb. John Bennett or Richard Kalfas (Jrs.),
177 lb. Richard Board (Jr.), and Richard Robeletto
(Soph).
On the Frosh wrestling front, Coach Burlingame has
had a dozen men come out for the team, half of whom
have experience. The frosh matmen will open their
even match schedule next Tuesday at home with RP1.
Probable starters in ne week's opener are 123 lb.
Bill Thomas, 130 lb. Ray Barter, 137 lb. Bob Vergini,
147 lb John Miller, 157 lb. John Robb, 167 1b. Larry

And then along came Joan! I don't know; it always
seems to happen — maybe I just think about it too much,
I'd better be careful, too — sometimes I think out loud.
Snap out of it, — pay attention now. Gee, this guy
next to me is a schlepp — I swear if he scratches his
rib cage once more, I'll scream. Now I'm getting
violent — not, maybe dramatic is the word I'm searching
for — sixteen minutes to go. Let's see, where was I?
(IT's about the thirty-second memory span I have) If I
wear my hair differently, I'll certainly be more noticeable — maybe, — no, mother and dad don't like it wound
around my wrists. Oh, monotonous tone — thou art
driving me stir-crazy!
Only four and one-half days — till my dentist's appointment, till my dentist's appointment. I wish he
didn't insist on my standing to have my cavaties filled
while he sits in the chair. Odd—that's definitely the
situation. What's new?
I have it worked out to meticuous precision now.
When the bell rings, I pile my books, then rise, give
two tugs on my skirt, and perambulate in a pace of
fifty steps a minute. It always works — he appears
exactly when I round the corner — he always smiles.
(Sigh), he'll begin to speak . . .
And then along comes Joan—
