been examined, and one hundred and sixty-seven haqe passed. the

The average age of these ptxpils is nineteen and one-fourtbtyears,.
Of these, seventy-eight had taught an average period of seventeen
aria one-thirdamonths previous,to entering the school.
The

per cent of whom have, graduated. TEirty-one counties. were represented in the last gyaduating class; and all the counties in'the
State furnished pupils within the year except Delaware, Fulton,
Hamilton, Orleans and3Sullivan.

FacuZty.
At the close of the forty-second term, Prof. Williams D. Huntley
tendered his resignation as superintendent of the experimental
school, a position which he hail honorably filled for the previous
nipe years.
I n September following, John H. Prel~cch,LL. D:, superintendeut of the city schools of Syracase, receiied from the c~mmittee
the appointment of professor of the0i.y and practic'e in teaching and
superintendent of the e3perimei1tal a i d primary schdols. -Dr. '
Prench brings t o the duties of his office a reputatio: for ability and
experience in his profession which warrant us in anticipating the
best results from his appointment.
I n consequence of the increased number of pupils in the experimental department, andtthe mant of a better supervisio;l ,over the
pupil-teachers from the Normal department, it iras apparent that '
an assistant was ~zeeded. y s s Sylvia' JSEastman, for some yeqrs
princihal of the Townsend school in Syracuse, was called to this
position. The committee have thus far had every reason to besatisfied with her labors.

The Normal School of the State of New York was estatlished

by an aot of the Legislature, in 1844: "for t h s instructio; and . 1
practice of Teachers of Cdmmon Schools in the Science of Education .

and the art of Teaching." I t was first established for five years, as
ail experiment, and went into operation on the 18th of December,
1844, in a building provided. gratuitously by t h e city of Albany,
,
and temporarily fitted up for that purpose. The first term opened
with twenty-nine pupils, and closed with ninety-seven. .The, number i n attendance the second term was about two hnndred. The
average number is now about two hundred and fifty.

Pu 1848, an act was passed by the LegisIature l 1 for-the permaneht establis~mentof the State Normal ScLool," appropriating
$15,000 towards the erection of a suitable building. The following year, an additional appropriation of $10,000 was .made for its
completion. A large and commodious edifice, containing a dwelling house for t4e Principal; was accordingly erected on 'the: corner
of Lodge and Howard streets, adjoining the State Geological and
Agricultural rooms. To this building the school was remo

"The school commi'ssioners are directed to give the most extended notice in their power bf vacancies; and to interest themselves in finding proper pupils to be appointed.
':I n making the selections;those who from past successful expenence have proved their aptness to teach, o r fyom traits of character, clearly developed, give fair promise of future success, should
* be preferred. Talents n6t below mediocrity, unblemished morals
and sound health, are regarded as indispensable. I n your visitations of the schools, you will sometimes find 'teachers who only
need the instruction which this sch0.01 is designed to give, to inpure their highest success and usefulness; or pupils who @we giveh

It is not claimed that i p order t o meet the present demands of

ordinary district schools, a student must complete the entire course

of study above specified. The Normal School claims to exert
its most direct ,and powerful influence by supplying -a superigr .
grade of scholarship for the higher public schools in its graduates,
but at the same time to supply the wants of a lower grade of
,
echools, it provides anSundergkaduatecourse sufliciently'moclerate
in its requisitions. . .

The studies of the Junior class are designez to prepare a higher
order of teachers for the common school generally ; those who aTe
looking for-schools of a still better grade, have befere t h e h the
Sub-senior course ; and for those who aim a t more' impo~tant
. .positions in the higher school-s, or at principalships, the Senior
studies' are believed to be none too complete or seyere. To extend,
or elevate the coarse beyond what it now is, would be to put its
completion beyond the'time and rnei& of most ~f those who now

graduate ; and more, it would simply educate the few who could
complete it beyond even)lhe reach of the higher schools, oq

account of the limited demand for'such teachers, and the insu8ii
cient compensation offered -them. On the other hand, to modify
it so, as to make it less severe upoqthe pupils at .any o11e time,
would be to disregard the fact that it is no par of the true province of the Norma! School to afford a purely aca e&c instruction - 1

The object of these departments is to g i ~ to

. Senior yd:Sub-senior classes an opportunity to apply i.n practice, '
under'the direction of experienyed teachers, the, methods of instruction and di~ciplineincklcated in the _Normal $chool, and of'
learning by obserGation and practice the most approved methods
of instruction, classification and discipline adapted to public
schools.

supervision of the Professor of "The Theory and Practice-of
Teaching," each department being under the immediate charge of

completion. To give opportunity for alternate study and recitation, each class is subdivided into two divisions, making in all ten

studies of mental arithmetic and geography. The course of'stady
embraces the subjects taught in the public schools of the State.

illustrating the subjects here .taught, and to give all some practice in
school management, each one is'in turn required to take charge of ,
the study room for a few 'days, and afterwards to instruct one class
for 'at le'ast two weeks; and each teacher is, expected to exercise
- all his tact, energy and skill to'advance the class placed under hia
instruction.
On having his class assigned to him, the teacher remains asaQ

The object of this departmgnt is to illustrate the organization,
management and instruction of primary schools. It contains fifty
pupils between five and nine years of age. These pupils are
divided into two classes, and each class into two subdivisions.
These-classes are taught mainly by the members of the 'Sub-senior
class, under the immediate difection* and criticism of the' teacher
in charge, each. member spehding at least two weeks in thee&partment. The instruction is mainly pral .and objective, and in
accordance with Pestalozzian principles.

The Senior class spend one hour each day for six weeks of the
term, in the description and practice of methods of primary instruction.; .
Examiaat<ons.
The examinationsat the close of each L r m are, in part writ€&,
and in part oral. The questions for the written examinations are
prepared under the direction of the Bxecutive Committee, and$rst
presented to the teachers as well as pupils at the time of their examinations. The answers to the questions of each papel-are written out at one sitting, the pupil having no opportunity to obtain .
-assistance from text-books or fellow-pupils. The oral.bxaminations
occupy the last three days preceding the closing exercises of each
term.
